<strong>Bartonella</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>Becom<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Most</strong><br />

<strong>Important</strong> <strong>Issue</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Treatment</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong><br />

by Dr. James Schaller, M.D.<br />

Powerful Diagnostic<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong> Sk<strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong> may be one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important <strong>is</strong>sues <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease.<br />

Why In last month's <strong>is</strong>sue we<br />

showed it was a stagger<strong>in</strong>g<br />

immune-suppressive <strong>in</strong>fection.<br />

We have v<strong>is</strong>ualized <strong>the</strong>se<br />

unusual bacteria cover<strong>in</strong>g red<br />

blood cells, and yet <strong>the</strong> patient<br />

had no fever. If th<strong>is</strong> were any<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r bacteria, e.g., Staph or<br />

Strep, <strong>the</strong> patient would be<br />

dead <strong>in</strong> days! At th<strong>is</strong> time, I<br />

believe it <strong>is</strong> impossible to fully<br />

kill <strong>of</strong>f all <strong>Lyme</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Bartonella</strong>, simply<br />

because we know from many<br />

specialized labs that <strong>Bartonella</strong><br />

turns <strong>of</strong>f immunity <strong>in</strong> many<br />

ways m<strong>is</strong>sed until recently.<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong> body volume will go<br />

down with treatment but not a<br />

cure. How could it with an<br />

<strong>in</strong>fection that <strong>is</strong> so powerful it<br />

turns <strong>of</strong>f immune chemicals to<br />

allow it to safely float <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

blood<br />

It <strong>is</strong> also very easy to<br />

m<strong>is</strong>s because no lab <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

world can test for all <strong>the</strong> new<br />

species. New <strong>Bartonella</strong><br />

species are be<strong>in</strong>g found every<br />

month us<strong>in</strong>g DNA techniques<br />

similar to those used to map<br />

and identify our human<br />

genomes. Some unpubl<strong>is</strong>hed<br />

research talks about 32 species<br />

and 212 variants. An antibody<br />

test for one <strong>is</strong> one too few if it<br />

<strong>is</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r stra<strong>in</strong>. We currently<br />

are us<strong>in</strong>g a wide range <strong>of</strong> labs<br />

to identify <strong>Bartonella</strong>. One<br />

sample lab, which still occasionally<br />

m<strong>is</strong>ses notic<strong>in</strong>g it, was<br />

d<strong>is</strong>cussed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> August 2007<br />

<strong>is</strong>sue.<br />

The Use <strong>of</strong> Sk<strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs to<br />

Diagnose or to Ra<strong>is</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

Possibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bartonella</strong><br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se proposed<br />

sk<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs we feel are solidly<br />

diagnostic <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bartonella</strong>.<br />

And with new advanced and<br />

diverse lab test<strong>in</strong>g which looks<br />

for <strong>Bartonella</strong> over 8 ways, we<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> positive labs match<br />

<strong>the</strong>se proposed <strong>Bartonella</strong> sk<strong>in</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs very well. Therefore,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce rout<strong>in</strong>e lab test<strong>in</strong>g done <strong>is</strong><br />

very poor, and s<strong>in</strong>ce even one<br />

large lab <strong>is</strong> ra<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g its titer cut<br />

<strong>of</strong>f for a positive, due to so<br />

many positive "past" <strong>in</strong>fections<br />

that are supposedly "not cl<strong>in</strong>ically<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gful," we can use<br />

all <strong>the</strong> help we can get <strong>in</strong> diagnos<strong>is</strong>.<br />

And s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>Bartonella</strong> has<br />

far more ways <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

humans and damages all organs<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> man has no mold tox<strong>in</strong> exposure or o<strong>the</strong>r chemical tox<strong>in</strong> exposure.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> Babesia was killed quickly and fully. H<strong>is</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong> <strong>is</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g treated with<br />

many strong <strong>in</strong>terventions. Th<strong>is</strong> serious sk<strong>in</strong> erosion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hands only<br />

began to improve with new treatments only found helpful with<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong>. He has pr<strong>of</strong>ound <strong>Bartonella</strong> <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong> blood.<br />

<strong>in</strong> 12-20 ways, we feel <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a sample <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> our images<br />

now could save lives, decrease<br />

illness, prevent psychiatric act<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out and prevent organ damage.<br />

While vast numbers <strong>of</strong><br />

images <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bartonella</strong> will be <strong>in</strong><br />

Detoxification can be<br />

an important method to support<br />

<strong>the</strong> patient dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir heal<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cr<strong>is</strong><strong>is</strong>. As with many autoimmune<br />

cases, <strong>the</strong>re are many<br />

factors. Neurotox<strong>in</strong> overload <strong>is</strong><br />

a common problem that affects<br />

many patients. The source <strong>of</strong><br />

neurotox<strong>in</strong>s may be heavy metals,<br />

viruses, bacteria (<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

case <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong>), fungi, molds,<br />

parasites and protozoans. Some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tox<strong>in</strong>s actually target,<br />

impair and even damage <strong>the</strong><br />

nervous system and <strong>the</strong> detoxification<br />

organs. Th<strong>is</strong> can fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

impair and block <strong>the</strong> route<br />

for normal excretion, caus<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an accumulation <strong>of</strong> tox<strong>in</strong>s. Th<strong>is</strong><br />

results <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tracellular damage<br />

and fur<strong>the</strong>r progression <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease.<br />

In <strong>Lyme</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease, <strong>the</strong><br />

bacteria <strong>is</strong> a "smart" bug which<br />

wants to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its life with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> person. It actually hides<br />

itself from <strong>the</strong> immune system.<br />

The <strong>Lyme</strong> bacteria <strong>is</strong> neurotoxic<br />

and, <strong>in</strong> order to survive,<br />

clogs up <strong>the</strong> lymphatic system<br />

and causes <strong>the</strong> blood to thicken.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> leads to poor blood<br />

flow through <strong>the</strong> liver and a<br />

stick<strong>in</strong>ess to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terstitial<br />

fluid. The <strong>in</strong>terstitial fluid <strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> fluid that ba<strong>the</strong>s and nour<strong>is</strong>hes<br />

<strong>the</strong> t<strong>is</strong>sue cells. It also<br />

picks up microorgan<strong>is</strong>ms, foreign<br />

particles, enzymes, prote<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

and hormones for process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through <strong>the</strong> lymphatic<br />

system. In addition to <strong>the</strong> lymphatic<br />

system, <strong>Lyme</strong> prefers to<br />

travel through <strong>the</strong> collagen<br />

more than <strong>the</strong> blood. <strong>Lyme</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease<br />

<strong>is</strong> a systemic <strong>in</strong>fection and<br />

it can <strong>in</strong>vade and damage any<br />

and all organs, glands, and systems<br />

<strong>of</strong> our body. <strong>Lyme</strong><br />

patients are also challenged by<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r co-<strong>in</strong>fections that are<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten overlooked.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> its ability to<br />

hide from <strong>the</strong> immune system,<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong> makes itself difficult to<br />

diagnose through test<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>the</strong>reby difficult to design an<br />

effective treatment protocol.<br />

Often it can mask itself as a<br />

different d<strong>is</strong>ease such as<br />

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,<br />

Fibromyalgia, Multiple<br />

Scleros<strong>is</strong>, Park<strong>in</strong>son's,<br />

Obsessive Compulsive<br />

D<strong>is</strong>order (OCD), or<br />

Amyotrophic Lateral Scleros<strong>is</strong><br />

(Lou Gehrig d<strong>is</strong>ease). It <strong>is</strong><br />

important for <strong>the</strong> physician to<br />

ascerta<strong>in</strong> if <strong>Lyme</strong> <strong>is</strong> at a causal<br />

level <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se d<strong>is</strong>eases.<br />

Assum<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> patient <strong>is</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

treated with an appropriate protocol,<br />

effective detoxification<br />

plays an extremely important<br />

role <strong>in</strong> elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> neurotox<strong>in</strong>s<br />

from <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />

be<strong>in</strong>g killed, it produces its<br />

own neurotox<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> defense.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> subsequently clogs <strong>the</strong><br />

blood, lymph, liver and colon<br />

which slows down <strong>the</strong> detoxification<br />

pathways. And as long<br />

as <strong>the</strong> patient <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> treatment for<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong>, detoxification needs to<br />

be ongo<strong>in</strong>g. When <strong>the</strong> body <strong>is</strong><br />

overburdened with a toxic load,<br />

<strong>the</strong> patient might experience a<br />

Herxheimer (Herx) reaction.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> my patients expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

her Herx reactions like a bad<br />

hangover. She had extreme<br />

fatigue, headaches, nausea, flulike<br />

symptoms, and a t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sensation throughout her body.<br />

She also noticed that her usual<br />

symptoms were made much<br />

worse. It <strong>is</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se<br />

ep<strong>is</strong>odes, <strong>the</strong> detoxification<br />

process becomes even more<br />

important.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>re are numerous<br />

methods for detoxification,<br />

one must select those which<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> most support. The two<br />

primary pathways <strong>of</strong> detoxification<br />

are: 1) <strong>the</strong> colon which<br />

removes solid wastes and 2)<br />

<strong>the</strong> kidneys and bladder which<br />

removes liquid wastes. These<br />

pathways have external elim<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

those be<strong>in</strong>g feces and<br />

ur<strong>in</strong>e. The liver <strong>is</strong> also a primary<br />

detoxification organ for<br />

tox<strong>in</strong>s, hormones, and prote<strong>in</strong><br />

and fat metabol<strong>is</strong>m. The pathway<br />

for water-soluble tox<strong>in</strong>s <strong>is</strong><br />

through <strong>the</strong> ur<strong>in</strong>e. Hormones<br />

are excreted through bile <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

GI tract. The lungs and sk<strong>in</strong> are<br />

<strong>the</strong> secondary pathways. The<br />

lungs outgas tox<strong>in</strong>s from <strong>the</strong><br />

bloodstream and <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> acts<br />

as an excretion pathway by<br />

erupt<strong>in</strong>g with pimples, pustules,<br />

abscesses or ooz<strong>in</strong>g sores<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> attempt to remove tox<strong>in</strong>s<br />

from <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

Colon Functions<br />

The functions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colon<br />

(also called <strong>the</strong> large <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>e<br />

or large bowel) are numerous.<br />

These functions work very well<br />

when <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>al bacteria <strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> beneficial varieties and <strong>in</strong><br />

sufficient quantities. The colon<br />

actually manufactures certa<strong>in</strong><br />

nutrients for us, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g B 12<br />

and Vitam<strong>in</strong> K. It absorbs<br />

nutrients which might have<br />

been m<strong>is</strong>sed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> small <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>es<br />

which helps to keep us<br />

nutrient dense. Third, it blocks<br />

<strong>the</strong> absorption <strong>of</strong> pathogens<br />

and tox<strong>in</strong>s from return<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> blood stream. Next, it reabsorbs<br />

and recycles water and<br />

bile. The water <strong>is</strong> used to keep<br />

<strong>the</strong> body from dehydrat<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>the</strong> bile <strong>is</strong> reused <strong>in</strong> digestion<br />

<strong>of</strong> fats. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> colon<br />

decomposes chyme (digested<br />

food) <strong>in</strong>to fecal material as <strong>the</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>al component <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> life<br />

cycle. It <strong>is</strong> essentially our own<br />

personal compost pit.<br />

Colon Detoxification<br />

For effective elim<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong><br />

solid waste, it <strong>is</strong> important to<br />

have a proper b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g agent<br />

such as fiber or chlorella. Th<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong> especially true with neurotox<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

One needs to also have<br />

numerous daily bowel movements<br />

or colon hydro<strong>the</strong>rapy.<br />

Dr. James Schaller’s Sample <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bartonella</strong> Photos<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong> makes Vascular<br />

Endo<strong>the</strong>lial Growth Factor (VEGF)<br />

which makes and opens capillaries and<br />

causes unusual vascular images. The <strong>in</strong>k<br />

circles are sitt<strong>in</strong>g on top <strong>of</strong> red circles.<br />

(Chicken wire pattern.)<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> 46 year old woman had virtually<br />

no ve<strong>in</strong> troubles until she went<br />

camp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> North Carol<strong>in</strong>a. Then over<br />

<strong>the</strong> next 6 years she became sicker and<br />

sicker and was found to have a huge<br />

VEGF (<strong>in</strong> a mold-free home) and was<br />

found to have Babesia, <strong>Bartonella</strong> and<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong>. These did not improve <strong>in</strong> any<br />

manner with over a dozen commonly<br />

used Tick-borne d<strong>is</strong>ease treatments. It<br />

was only newer treatments for <strong>Bartonella</strong><br />

that helped <strong>the</strong>se decrease. She has no<br />

relatives with th<strong>is</strong> high level <strong>of</strong> blood<br />

vessel trouble.<br />

Here <strong>is</strong> an older Veter<strong>in</strong>arian with<br />

no <strong>Lyme</strong> or o<strong>the</strong>r tick-borne <strong>in</strong>fections,<br />

who developed a sudden eccentric left<br />

sided mouth and lower cheek sk<strong>in</strong> thicken<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

She has <strong>Bartonella</strong> papules on her<br />

neck. She was positive for <strong>Bartonella</strong><br />

and feels her new types <strong>of</strong> treatment are<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g to help th<strong>is</strong> lea<strong>the</strong>r-like onesided<br />

sk<strong>in</strong> problem.<br />

A city-dwell<strong>in</strong>g older man had a<br />

past h<strong>is</strong>tory <strong>of</strong> fleas brought <strong>in</strong>to h<strong>is</strong><br />

home by h<strong>is</strong> cats. He was <strong>Lyme</strong> negative<br />

from three labs and had a good CD57<br />

count, which was 187. H<strong>is</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> d<strong>is</strong>colorations<br />

with different levels <strong>of</strong> pigmentation,<br />

we suggest, may be associated<br />

with various levels <strong>of</strong> VEGF, possibly<br />

MSH and <strong>Bartonella</strong> bacteria just under<br />

<strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>side vascular<br />

walls.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> woman has <strong>Bartonella</strong>,<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong> and Babesia. The Babesia was<br />

quickly treated with new speed kill<strong>in</strong>g<br />

agents. She had varicose look<strong>in</strong>g ve<strong>in</strong>s<br />

all over her body and <strong>Bartonella</strong> papules<br />

<strong>in</strong> her <strong>in</strong>ner thighs. We suspect her varicose<br />

ve<strong>in</strong>s could be <strong>in</strong>creased by<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong>; especially s<strong>in</strong>ce after a tick<br />

bite <strong>the</strong>y became worse over three years.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g that time she also received two<br />

steroid shots. Please note that <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong><br />

surface area over <strong>the</strong> steroid <strong>in</strong>jection<br />

site shows marked nodules with scal<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and sk<strong>in</strong> thicken<strong>in</strong>g and are very vascular.<br />

We suggest that <strong>the</strong> steroid was<br />

released on entrance and exit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> needle,<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g a high concentration <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong><br />

one-<strong>in</strong>ch location and it fur<strong>the</strong>r weaken<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> immune system and <strong>Bartonella</strong>,<br />

perhaps toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>Lyme</strong>, made <strong>the</strong>se<br />

two eccentric sk<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> man has <strong>Bartonella</strong> with burgundy<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es shown <strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong> black flair. These<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es turned white with <strong>Bartonella</strong> treatment.<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong> turns <strong>of</strong>f many parts<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> immune system. It <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> only<br />

bacteria I know <strong>of</strong> that can float <strong>in</strong><br />

blood for years and not kill. When it<br />

turn <strong>of</strong>f some newly found immune<br />

stimulators, it <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>the</strong> activity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Lyme</strong> and o<strong>the</strong>r bacteria. Here we see<br />

toes which are not able to hold <strong>of</strong>f simple<br />

toe fungus <strong>in</strong> a man with clear<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong>.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> middle aged man with<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong> has many papules on h<strong>is</strong><br />

body. Here <strong>is</strong> a dark one <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong><br />

h<strong>is</strong> chest. The papule can be m<strong>is</strong>taken<br />

for a sk<strong>in</strong> tag or a mole, but it <strong>is</strong> a slightly<br />

ra<strong>is</strong>ed t<strong>in</strong>y bump with red, brown or a<br />

sk<strong>in</strong> color and <strong>is</strong> usually m<strong>is</strong>sed.<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong> causes <strong>the</strong>m rout<strong>in</strong>ely<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to even basic articles. He had<br />

about 15 <strong>in</strong> different locations on h<strong>is</strong><br />

body and all were m<strong>is</strong>sed or ignored <strong>in</strong><br />

h<strong>is</strong> yearly physicals.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e has never been<br />

heavy. He has no vascular d<strong>is</strong>orders.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> back developed pimples and side to<br />

side blood vessels after tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />

wooded area when he caught a cold. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> same time he had a very raw sore<br />

throat. H<strong>is</strong> DHEA and DHT are high.<br />

Both are found <strong>in</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease and<br />

promote acne. He has never been treated.<br />

He also has <strong>Bartonella</strong>.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> a purple-burgundy<br />

th<strong>in</strong>ned sk<strong>in</strong> area <strong>in</strong> a patient with<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner thigh area. It<br />

turned white repeatedly with <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

new <strong>Bartonella</strong> treatments. But <strong>the</strong>n<br />

reversed to th<strong>is</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al color because<br />

no treatment works <strong>in</strong> weeks to cure<br />

<strong>Bartonella</strong>.<br />

An image <strong>of</strong> a thigh show<strong>in</strong>g<br />

unusual bands <strong>of</strong> side to side thick p<strong>in</strong>k<strong>is</strong>h<br />

blood vessels between normal colored<br />

sk<strong>in</strong>.<br />

You should not have wide blood<br />

vessels go<strong>in</strong>g side to side across your<br />

thighs.<br />

Similarly, you should not have<br />

huge wide red or white "stretch marks"<br />

on your thighs or lower hips.<br />

Phil was reassigned to telephone<br />

He performed h<strong>is</strong> job so well<br />

It was <strong>the</strong>ir hope<br />

that it would be a tolerably<br />

short period <strong>of</strong> time. However,<br />

that hope turned <strong>in</strong>to an acrimonious<br />

and protracted legal<br />

battle.<br />

Despite be<strong>in</strong>g a diligent<br />

employee with a medical d<strong>is</strong>ability,<br />

Phil's job was term<strong>in</strong>ated.<br />

It was noted that h<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

was slated to close and that<br />

Wood was to be part <strong>of</strong> a downsiz<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

yet o<strong>the</strong>rs have been<br />

hired subsequent to Phil be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

laid <strong>of</strong>f. Additionally, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fice rema<strong>in</strong>s open thus far.<br />

Prior to h<strong>is</strong> job be<strong>in</strong>g unexpectedly<br />

term<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> April <strong>of</strong><br />

2007, <strong>the</strong> church that Phil and<br />

h<strong>is</strong> wife attend paid for plane<br />

tickets for Kim to accompany<br />

Phil to see ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Lyme</strong> literate<br />

physician, Dr. Steven<br />

Phillips <strong>in</strong> Ridgefield,<br />

Connecticut. Given th<strong>is</strong> devastat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and simultaneous dual<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> a debilitat<strong>in</strong>g illness<br />

and loss <strong>of</strong> livelihood, Phil's<br />

church stepped <strong>in</strong> to <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial ass<strong>is</strong>tance. Mr. and<br />

Mrs. Wood paid <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hotel, rental car and food dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> trip to <strong>the</strong> Connecticut<br />

physician, and fur<strong>the</strong>r paid <strong>the</strong><br />

$600.00 doctor bill. These out<strong>of</strong>-pocket<br />

costs to th<strong>is</strong> day have<br />

not been reimbursed by Liberty<br />

Mutual. Dr. Phillips concurred<br />

that Phil <strong>in</strong>deed had contracted<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease and that h<strong>is</strong><br />

symptoms were and are cons<strong>is</strong>tent<br />

with th<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease. He fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

wrote a letter to susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

diagnos<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong> to support<br />

Mr. Wood <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong> legal proceed<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Before see<strong>in</strong>g Dr. Phillips,<br />

Phil had received <strong>the</strong> same consensus<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ion on h<strong>is</strong> diagnos<strong>is</strong><br />

first from h<strong>is</strong> primary care doctor<br />

and subsequently by a <strong>Lyme</strong><br />

literate Infectious D<strong>is</strong>ease doctor<br />

<strong>in</strong> North Carol<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

As <strong>is</strong> tragically typical<br />

for advanced cases <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong><br />

Borrelios<strong>is</strong>, Phil has suffered<br />

with multiple unremitt<strong>in</strong>g physical<br />

<strong>is</strong>sues. A l<strong>is</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se problems<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes: body swell<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

mental confusion, t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

numbness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hands,<br />

migra<strong>in</strong>e headaches, dizz<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

muscle pa<strong>in</strong>, jo<strong>in</strong>t pa<strong>in</strong>, chest<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>, r<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ears, nausea,<br />

fever, and <strong>of</strong> course unrelent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fatigue. As a consequence<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Lyme</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ease, Phil<br />

also had to have h<strong>is</strong> gallbladder<br />

removed, not an uncommon<br />

occurrence... He experiences<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>is</strong>sues such as multiple<br />

rashes, <strong>in</strong>tracranial pressure,<br />

blurry v<strong>is</strong>ion, s<strong>in</strong>us <strong>in</strong>fections,<br />

and left knee, calf and foot<br />

problems. Mr. Wood frequently<br />

struggles with bra<strong>in</strong> fog. He<br />

also has experienced such serious<br />

bouts <strong>of</strong> vomit<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

dehydration that he has<br />

required <strong>in</strong>travenous <strong>in</strong>fusion <strong>of</strong><br />

fluids. There were many times<br />

that Phil was so seriously ill<br />

that he didn't know if he would<br />

wake up <strong>the</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

He has been hospitalized by<br />

severe reactions to medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

One such example <strong>is</strong> that he<br />

broke out with an excruciat<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

hyperes<strong>the</strong>tic rash from head<br />

to toe. Th<strong>is</strong> necessitated him to<br />

receive maximum doses <strong>of</strong><br />

Benadryl for approximately<br />

five days while be<strong>in</strong>g vigilantly<br />

monitored <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospital. It<br />

took two full weeks for that<br />

rash to fully d<strong>is</strong>sipate. It <strong>is</strong><br />

abundantly clear that Mr. Wood<br />

has suffered greatly due to<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong> Borrelios<strong>is</strong>. H<strong>is</strong> unimag<strong>in</strong>able<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g, shared by h<strong>is</strong><br />

wife Kim, has been compounded<br />

by <strong>the</strong> torturous legal <strong>is</strong>sues<br />

and attendant delays <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>come for daily liv<strong>in</strong>g caused<br />

by <strong>the</strong> obstruction<strong>is</strong>t behavior<br />

<strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ability carrier.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> nightmare,<br />

term<strong>in</strong>ation by h<strong>is</strong><br />

employer has caused Phil and<br />

Kim Wood to sell many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

possessions <strong>in</strong> order to avoid<br />

bankruptcy. Additionally, <strong>in</strong><br />

view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ability<br />

<strong>in</strong>surer stopped pay<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong><br />

medical claims, Phil's credit has<br />

suffered significantly. He also<br />

had to spend thousands <strong>of</strong> dollars<br />

to hire an attorney to compel<br />

Liberty Mutual to acknowledge<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir contractual obligation<br />

to pay for h<strong>is</strong> medical bills<br />

and provide benefits dur<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>voluntary illness and associated<br />

d<strong>is</strong>ability. Despite <strong>the</strong> positive<br />

precedent outcome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

case <strong>in</strong> favor <strong>of</strong> Wood, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

still rema<strong>in</strong>s a struggle. He<br />

now has <strong>in</strong>come for daily liv<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

yet no payments have been<br />

made for medical coverage or<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> prescriptions. Liberty<br />

Mutual rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> derogation<br />

<strong>of</strong> full court orders.<br />

Unfortunately, th<strong>is</strong> scenario<br />

<strong>of</strong> bad faith, job loss,<br />

<strong>in</strong>capacitation and near, if not<br />

total, bankruptcy plays itself<br />

out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> many chronic<br />

<strong>Lyme</strong> patients. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

shock<strong>in</strong>g, but typical experience<br />

<strong>of</strong> many who suffer from<br />

various forms <strong>of</strong> pers<strong>is</strong>tent illness.<br />
