TO GATHER ROCKS AND DO THE CHORES,
TO HARROW WIDE,
AND PLOW DEEP,
THE BIG OUTDOORS.

WITH BEAMED SHOULDERS,

HIEBERT: At a recent meeting of The Ladies Literary League of Quagmire, it
was decided to have this poem carved upon Ole's tombstone, wherever it is. In
proposing a raffle to pay for the monument, Mrs. Pete Cattalo paid a tribute to
Ole as well as to Sarah when she said…
CATTALO: "It is a big poem. But then Ole was a big man, big in every way,
you can take it from me."
SARAH: He certainly caused a stir. After he took off to join the Canadian
army, Mathilda was a wreck for a long time. That's when we got into translatin' in
German.
HIEBERT: In her grief, Mathilda turned to German literature and introduced
Sarah to the culture of her homeland.

HIEBERT: With the help of Mathilda's dictionary, Sarah translated several
songs from the Teutonic tongue, the best known being "Die Lorelei".
SARAH:
I KNOW NOT WHAT SHALL IT BETOKEN,
THAT I SO SORROWFUL SEEM,
A MARKLET FROM OUT OF OLD, SPOKEN,
THAT COMES ME NOT OUT OF THE BEAN,
THAT COMES ME NOT OUT OF THE BEAN.
THE LOFT IS COOL AND IT DARKLES,
AND RUEFULLY FLOWETH THE CLEAN,
THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN-TOP SPARKLES,
IN EVENING SUN-SHINE SHEEN,
IN EVENING SUN-SHINE SHEEN.
