<strong>Workshop</strong> on Outcomes-Based Teaching & Learning<br />

(OBTLA & Outcomes-Based Assessment-Grading<br />

This workshop aims to assist you in identifying and practising the most<br />

relevant and constructively aligned assessment tasks (ATs)and<br />

instructional/teaching learning activities (TLAs) for the course you will be<br />

teaching this coming semester.<br />

Outcomes of the workshop are: Upon completion of the workshop,<br />

participants will be able to:<br />

1. Compare & contrast between the transmittalist and the Student-<br />

Centered-Learning (SCL or Active Learning-AL) Instructional<br />

strategies.<br />

2. Propose and communicate (verbally and in writing) constructively<br />

aligned Outcomes-Based Teaching & Learning Activities (OBTLAs)<br />

you will employ for the course and for the first 2 units of the course<br />

you will be teaching next semester.<br />

3. Explain the models and approaches of outcomes-based assessment<br />

(OBAs)<br />

4. Describe the characteristics and processes of outcomes-based<br />

assessment<br />

5. Reflect the present assessment models, approaches and processes<br />

of the course you had taught.<br />

6. Propose and justify the assessment models, approaches and<br />

processes for the course you will be teaching.<br />

7. Develop and communicate (verbally and in writing) constructively<br />

aligned assessment tasks, the assessment weightage for the tasks,<br />

the performance criteria and the standards (rubrics) for the course<br />

you will be teaching.<br />

The outcomes above are very demanding and challenging to achieve in a<br />

2-days workshop but I shall try to facilitate its accomplishment. The<br />

achievement can be realized if all participants commit their time, energy<br />

and passion towards the goal. Hence, the activities will require<br />

involvement of ALL the participants. This workshop is for those who are<br />

ready to implement the paradigm shift strategies towards a more<br />

accountable graduates who will be more employable aligned with the<br />

objectives of the program, the vision & mission of the university and the<br />

attributes required in the Higher Education Transformational Plan.<br />

Participants are highly encouraged to bring their laptops so that they can<br />

work on the materials for their own course. Each participant will need to<br />

have a set of course outcomes that has been identified to assure<br />

achievement of the POs. They must also bring a set of lesson outcomes<br />

for the first 2 units of learning in preparation for the workshop.<br />

Day 1:<br />

9:00-10:30am Science research on Metacognition & the Learning<br />

Process<br />

10:30-11:00am Coffee Break<br />

11:00am-12:00 Best practices in SCL-TLA.<br />

12:00-1:00 Breakout into groups to propose OBTLAs<br />

1:00-2:15pm Lunch Break<br />

2:15-3:45pm Breakout into groups to propose OBTLA<br />

3:45-4:15pm Coffee Break<br />

4:15-5:30pm Presentation by groups (volunteer)<br />

Day 2:<br />

9:00-10:30am Theory on assessment-approaches, models, processes,<br />

methods, ATs, OBA & OBG<br />

10:30-11:00am Coffee Break<br />

11:00am-12:00 Breakout into groups to reflect on the present & propose<br />

ATs & methods for the future<br />

12:00-1:00 Continue groups activity: Propose weightage, OBG<br />

1:00-2:15pm Lunch Break<br />

2:15-3:45pm Continue groups activity: Propose rubrics<br />

3:45-4:15pm Coffee Break<br />

4:15-5:30pm Presentation by groups (volunteer)<br />

Requirements:<br />

• If possible, a monitor for each group or if participants can bring LCD<br />

from faculty, it can be used for their group during discussion (FSG<br />

groups).<br />

• Laptops for each participant (they bring their own)<br />

• Plug points for each participant (supply enough extension cords<br />

without causing a blackout)<br />

• Sufficient or comfortable space for participants & me to move<br />

around.<br />

• Some papers for the groups to use during discussion.<br />

for the group tasks as well<br />
