MEDIA RELEASE
The VSO’s April Concert Listing
Vancouver, BC – Springtime at the VSO begins with the epic Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by
extraordinary Vancouver-born pianist Avan Yu. Winner of the 2012 Sydney International Piano
Competition, Avan Yu is pursuing a graduate degree in piano performance at the Berlin University of the
Arts. The concert also features Tchaikovsky’s beautiful, joyous Little Russian Symphony. DaYe Lin
conducts. Saturday and Monday, April 6 and 8, 8pm, and Sunday, April 7, 2pm, Orpheum.
Next up, Ray Chen, one of the most compelling young violinists in the world today, will perform
Zigeunerweisen and Fantasy on Bizet’s Carmen, two of Sarasate’s arm-twisting thrillers. This concert
also features one of the most popular symphonies ever written, Dvorak’s magnificent ‘New World’
Symphony. Andrew Grams conducts. Saturday, April 13, 8pm, Orpheum and Monday, April 15, 8pm,
Bell Performing Arts Centre.
At the stunning Chan Centre, Anthony Marwood will lead from the violin in a program that includes one
of Mozart’s five great violin concertos and beautiful music by Haydn, Schubert and Rameau. Already
known for his intense musicality and sensational technique as a violinist, he is making a name for himself
as an accomplished conductor as well. Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20, 8pm, Chan Centre for the
Performing Arts.
Over to the Orpheum Annex, the VSO will go off the beaten track with works for brass and percussion,
alternated with compositions for string orchestra. Depart with Sofia Gubaidulina, Michael Colgrass and
Edward Top to places that may be eerie, and sometimes poetic, and listen to Giorgio Magnanensi’s
experimental bowings and Louis Andriessen’s absolving open strings where the audience might find
solemnity through the rituals of life. Saturday, April 20, 8pm, Orpheum Annex.
The VSO will present Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY, performed live by the orchestra.
After a sold-out presentation with the VSO in 2009, Distant Worlds returns with new music selections
never before seen in Vancouver, as well as past favourites. Scenes from the games will be shown in
exciting high-definition video on the big screen while the orchestra, the UBC Opera Ensemble, and
conductor Arnie Roth play the award-winning music. Wednesday April 24, 8pm at the Orpheum
Theatre.
April’s Pacific Arbour Tea and Trumpets matinee concert will transport you to Paris in the Spring! The
concert features music by Berlioz and Chopin, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, the Pas de six from Rossini’s
William Tell, and Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre. Gordon Gerrard conducts, and Christopher Gaze
narrates. Thursday, April 25, 2pm, Orpheum.
The month comes to a swinging close with a London Drugs VSO Pops presentation of John Pizzarelli.
The son of legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, he grew up surrounded by jazz and swing legends and has
become a legend-in-the-making himself, with unmatched class, talent and wit. Known worldwide for his
extraordinary rapport with audiences, smooth vocals and fantastic jazz guitar playing, John Pizzarelli
delivers performances to rave reviews wherever he goes. Don’t miss his sizzling, swingin’ tribute to The
Duke. Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, 8pm, Orpheum.
