Annual Schools' Environmental Poster Competition
It’s the eleventh edition of the Schools’
Environmental Calendar! Help us make it
an extra special edition by designing an
eye catching environmentally themed
poster – your entry could be chosen to
feature in the 2014 Schools’ Environmental
Calendar.
Thirteen posters in all will be chosen from
entries received by the closing date of
Friday 18 October 2013.
Some suggestions to help you create your design:
• Base posters on a current environmental topic.
The topic is up to you but make sure it has a
strong environmental theme.
• Consider giving your poster a theme that fits
a particular month or season.
• Remember the calendar is unique to Newry and
Mourne District Council so why not reflect this
in your poster;
• Whatever you decide make sure your poster is
colourful and eye catching - and you can add a
slogan if you wish!

Participation in the Council’s Schools’
Environmental Poster Competition has a number
of benefits for your pupils and your school:
• providing an ideal way for teachers to introduce
environmental subjects to pupils in a fun and
interesting way;
• contributing as evidence of work towards a
number of the Ecos-chools’ themes for those schools
actively involved in the Eco-Schools programme
(you can find our more about Eco-Schools at
www.eco-schoolsni.org);
• giving pupils’ the opportunity to have their
artwork seen and admired throughout the
Council District and beyond!

The Competition
Newry and Mourne District Council invites your pupils to enter their Environmental Calendar Poster
Competition.
The competition is open to the following pupils:
• Primary level Primary 6 & 7
• Secondary level Years 8, 9 & 10
Thirteen winning posters will be chosen from all entrants and included in the 2014 Schools’
Environmental Calendar which will be produced in December 2013 and widely distributed
throughout the Council area. The overall winning poster will be used as the front cover of the
calendar and each calendar month will feature one of the twelve runners up posters.
A reception at the Council Offices will be held in November 2013 (date to be confirmed)
at which all thirteen pupils whose artwork has been chosen to be included in the calendar
will be awarded a prize.

All thirteen chosen winners will also receive a
framed copy of their poster as a momento.
A free supply of the final calendar will be
distributed to all schools in the District between
December 2013 and January 2014.
A selected number of entries, deemed by the
judges to be of a high standard, but not selected
as one of the thirteen posters included in the final
calendar, will receive “Certificates of Achievement”.

Competition Rules and Guideline for Teachers
• The Schools’ Environmental Calendar Poster Competition is open to all Primary
and Secondary schools in the Newry and Mourne District Council area.
• The competition is being financed jointly by the Council’s Environment, Health and
Building Services, Technical Service, Leisure Departments and the Equality Unit.
• The competition is open to Primary Six and Seven and Years Eight, Nine and Ten in
Secondary School ONLY.
• Participating pupils are asked to produce an
depicting a strong environmental theme of their choice.
• Judges will look for original, creative art that colourfully expresses the pupils chosen
environmental topic.
• The poster may include a message or slogan at the pupils own discretion.
• Please do not mount posters on card or laminate posters.
• All posters must include on the reverse side, clearly printed the following information:

• The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding
their decision.
• All entries are submitted on the understanding that, if chosen as one of the thirteen
winners, the competition organisers have the right to use the posters in the proposed
2014 Schools’ Environmental Calendar as well as in any other Council publication /
promotion /social media outlet eg Corporate website and facebook page.
• The organisers cannot guarantee the return of posters entered into the competition.
• A prize giving ceremony will be held in November 2013 to which all winners will be
invited to attend.
• Certificates of Achievement will be sent to individual schools by post.
