THE GAME<br />

• Newberry College is in its 97th season of intercollegiate football.<br />

• Neither squad is ranked or receiving votes in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll and neither is<br />

ranked in the D2Football.com poll.<br />

• The teams share nine common opponents. Both teams will play a full SAC schedule<br />

as well as North Greenville and UNC Pembroke. Newberry holds a 1-1 record against<br />

those played thus far, defeating Catawba and losing to North Greenville, while TC is 0-2<br />

against those schools.<br />

• This is the 89th season of football at Setzler Field and the Wolves’ sixth season on the<br />

artificial surface.<br />

• The Wolves play the first of back-to-back home games for the first time in a year (Oct.<br />

23 and 30, 2010).<br />

THE SERIES<br />

• This game is the 14th meeting between Newberry and Tusculum.<br />

• Tusculum leads the series 8-5, with the series going back to 1998. Tusculum won the<br />

first meeting, 31-28.<br />

• Newberry is 1-5 all-time at home against the Pioneers, with the one win coming in<br />

2007’s 17-14 comeback win capped by an Andre Moyd INT return for a touchdown.<br />

• Newberry won last year’s meeting, 63-56, behind 8 total touchdowns from Bryan Ehrlich<br />

(7 passing, 1 rushing) and 322 receiving yards by Brandon Bostick.<br />

• Tusculum won the last meeting at Setzler Field in 2009, 34-31, after trailing by 11 at<br />

halftime.<br />

THE COACHES<br />

<strong>NEW</strong>BERRY: Todd Knight (Gardner-Webb, 1989) is in his third season as Newberry’s<br />

head coach and his second season as a collegiate head coach. He has an 12-14 record<br />

and a record of 4-1 against teams ranked in the AFCA Divsion II Top 25. He has a 9-9<br />

record against the South Atlantic Conference. In 2009, Knight led Newberry to a 6-4<br />

record and became the first Newberry head coach to record a winning record in his inaugural<br />

season since Reed Charpia in 1978. In 2010, Knight led Newberry to a 4-6 record.<br />

This is his third meeting with Tusculum, with the road team winning each time.<br />

TUSCULUM: Frankie DeBusk (Furman, 1991) is in his 14th season as the Pioneers’<br />

head coach and as a collegiate head coach. He has a record of 79-69 overall, and 40-48<br />

in SAC play. He was the 2008 SAC Coach of the Year as well as AFCA Region Coach of<br />

the Year.<br />

THIS WEEK’S OPPONENT: TUSCULUM<br />

• Previous Harlon Hill candidate quarterback Bo Cordell was knocked out of the season<br />

with an injury against North Greenville, and the new signal callers have had a hard<br />

time matching TC’s previous offensive aptitude.<br />

• Torrey Slaven will get the chance to get the Pioneers’ offense rolling again. He has<br />

completed 71-of-101 passes for 777 yards, 7 touchdowns and no interceptions in three<br />

games.<br />

• Deonte Gist is a threat, leading three receivers with more than 40 catches in 7 games.<br />

He has 54 catches for 604 yards a 3 TDs, while Michael Rodriquez has 53 catches for 428<br />

yards and a score. Rashaad Carter has 43 catches for 552 yards and 4 TDs.<br />

• Marcus Foster leads the rushing department with 53 carries for 201 yards and 2 TDs,<br />

along with 20 catches for 139 yards and a score.<br />

• Foster and Gist also each have over 300 yards in the kickoff return category.<br />

• Kicker Logan Cornelius has made all 18 PAT attempts, but is only 7-of-12 on field goal<br />

attempts.<br />

• Brian Alexander’s 55 tackles leads the team.<br />

THIS YEAR’S CAPTAINS<br />

• The team selected five captains for the 2011 season with two on offense and three<br />

on defense.<br />

• The offensive captains are quarterback Bryan Ehrlich, center Chase Gamble and<br />

guard Lequawn James.<br />

• The defensive captains are inside linebacker Apollo Stretch and cornerback James<br />

Bostick.<br />

THE ORDER OF THE GRAY STRIPE<br />

• A total of 12 Newberry players wear a distinctive gray stripe down the center of their<br />

helmets. This is awarded by the coaching staff to players who are not only fine athletes<br />

but who are also exemplary in the classroom and in the community.<br />

• Each member of the order signs an oath which reads: “This document certifies that<br />

the following student-athletes have mutually pledged to each other their commitment<br />

to proudly serve our program with honor on and off the field of friendly strife. They<br />

furthermore promise and swear to abide by and stand firm to the rules and regulations<br />

of the program and it is not only their right, but their duty to leave behind a legacy that<br />

will ensure the successes of Newberry College Football for ages to come.”<br />

• The Order represents less than just over five percent of the football program as a whole.<br />
