THE SALE 

This is a sale by tender to reduce numbers in our herd. We are offering 

some of our best matriarch bloodstock on a reserved basis, plus a 

number of younger offspring on a non-reserved basis. 

This is an international sale, offering to alpaca breeders all over the world. 

Southern Alpacas Stud offers follow up mating with our top studs, and for 

overseas buyers, isolation on our farm and shipping from New Zealand, if 

successful purchasers require these services. 

ABOUT SOUTHERN ALPACAS 

Southern Alpacas Stud has been breeding quality alpacas since the very 

start of the New Zealand alpaca industry in 1989, and is still a major 

player in the NZ industry. 

The owners of Southern Alpacas Stud, Nic Cooper and Linda Blake, have 

been instrumental in most of the major developments in the industry over 

the past 23 years, including the Alpaca Registry, the Tb testing scheme, 

Breed Standards, the genetic gain project, and neo-natal education. 

Southern Alpacas Stud were the first (after the original Chilean 

shipments) to import new alpaca genetics to NZ. As well as the usual 

Australian genetic base, there is a high proportion of quality USA genetics 

in the herd, personally selected on trips to USA. 

Southern Alpacas Stud has been exporting alpacas for the past 7 years, 

to UK and Europe. The exported alpacas have performed well in shows in 

those countries, achieving many championship ribbons. 

Southern Alpacas Stud operates two Registry herd names – NZ Southern 

(SNZ) and Hemiccoyo (HEM). Also included in the tender are agisted 

alpacas in the Greenstone (GTN) herd name that have been managed 

since inception in line with the Southern Alpacas Stud breeding 

philosophy. 

SOUTHERN ALPACAS BREEDING PHILOSOPHY 

Southern Alpacas has developed a breeding philosophy that fits a long 

term commercial herd development. It is very conformation and fibre 

based and is not influenced by short term breeding models proposed by 

industry advisors from time to time. 

We breed damn good fibre producing alpacas. 

For many years our goals were around breeding fine micron alpacas that 

hold their micron to commercial fleece levels into older age. 

Having largely achieved that goal, we now concentrate on lowering guard 

hair levels (or lowering guard hair micron), eliminating colour 

contamination, and gaining uniformity across the body of the alpaca. 

Whilst we have no breeding goal for crimp style, the above goals have 

tended to produce us a high frequency, high amplitude type of fleece.

SOUTHERN ALPACAS STUD MALES 

The alpacas in this tender are largely a result of our breeding programme, so we briefly describe the stud males we own that have been used in that 

programme. 

ILR Alpine Fiber’s Brutus 

Without question New Zealand’s most successful stud male. His progeny and grand-progeny have been winning championships for many years, all over 

the world. He throws progeny with fine fibre, little fibre blow out with age or environment, and low levels of guard hair. A Hemingway son, we saw and 

purchased him at an AOBA Nationals in USA. 

Aquaviva Titus 

A fawn son of Brutus who has remained extremely fine into maturity, yet showing great density. Many times a champion himself, he is now throwing 

champion offspring – again being sold all over the world. His two fawn full brothers (Marcus and Claudius) are famous in Europe. 

NZ Southern Black Adder 

A solid black son of Brutus who has remained fine and uncontaminated. 

ILR Patagonia’s Maipo 

Imported from USA after he won National Black Male Champion at the AOBA National Show. 

Cambridge Commander 

Purchased whilst on our farm on the way to Europe, he is a top son of Jolimont Commisario, 

one of EP Cambridge’s top males. He adds structure and bulk to the fleece. 

Halcyon Heir Apparent ET 

A son of Marriglen Mars (3 times Australian National Fleece Supreme Champion). 

Heir Apparent contributes through his very low levels of (and low micron of) guard hair. 

Also in the genetic background of the alpacas offered for tender are these studs. 

Eringa Park Saintly: son of Accoyo Royal Fawn (ex USA) 

ILR Accoyo America Paramount: son of El Nino and grandson of Caligula (ex USA) 

Malakai Tulacan Prince: son of Shanbrooke Accoyo Tulaco and Blue Grass Leading Lady (ex Australia) 

Eringa Park Chameleon: appaloosa son of EP Cambridge Caesar 

Brutus with some of the ribbons won by him and his progeny in 2002. 

Red is first; broad ribbons are championships. Many more won since. 

Cambridge Encounter: bringing Jolimont Conquistador and ILR Ppperuvian Auzengate genetics, he was Junior National Champion in Australia. 

Most of these studs are being retained by Southern Alpacas Stud, and will be available for mating females successfully purchased by tender.

SALE FORMAT 

The sale is a tender sale. You choose what you want to pay. 

Tenders close at 11.59 pm on Monday 30 th April 2012. 

Some alpacas have no reserves. Some alpacas do have a reserve 

price. This is indicated on the lot numbers. 

Most lots are female alpacas. There are a limited number of stud males 

and young potential stud males for sale. The younger males have been 

selected because of their perceived stud potential. Male certification 

(in NZ) is mentioned in the lot details.

EXPORT 

Southern Alpacas Stud operates an established on-farm export facility, 

and will be exporting a pre-arranged shipment to Europe late July or 

August 2012. Alpacas from this tender purchased by overseas buyers 

can be part of this shipment. There are other isolation facilities available 

in NZ should these be preferred. 

Southern Alpacas Stud offers special rates for mating with Southern 

Alpacas Stud owned males for alpacas purchased in the tender in the 

two months following the close of the tender. Pregnancies on exported 

females are expected to be in place prior to the planned shipment to 

Europe.

A well conformed female with great stance, producing excellent cria that carry a great presence 

into the show ring. The fleece carries the density and fineness that is lacking in so many darker 

coloured alpacas. 

Roulade has produced 2 excellent male cria – show champion NZ Southern Martius (Lot 103) and 

her current solid dark brown male cria, born 8/12/2011. This cria, sired by champion Aquaviva 

Titus, is a full brother to Martius and is developing well with a “presence”. Roulade is currently 

re-mating to Aquaviva Titus.

With a first fleece at below 15 micron and from the Brutus line (which tends to restrict micron blow 

out) Charlotte was always going to be a very fine mature breeding female. However she also 

carries density relative to her micron. 

Her dam, Bronte, is our flagship alpaca appearing on all of our promotions as a well conformed, 

good looking alpaca, who has won senior female at shows. 

Charlotte has produced a solid dark fawn female from a mating to Cambridge Commander and is 

currently re-mating to the same male.

Conquistador), giving Faith an excellent genetic background.

From two grey parents, Pyralini is a black with some small grey areas on the rear leg. Her sire, 

Pyralis, is now exported and working in the UK. He is a fine micron mid-grey male with reasonable 

density from Coonawarra Nostrodamus. Her dam (Zazzle) is a rare roan grey female sired by EP 

Cambridge Peruvian Caesar. 

Pyralini has been bred to a top NZ grey – Alidale Dalwhinnie – and she is due to birth end

dam carrying Eringa Park Irraquoy (NWA Ltd Ruffo) genetics. 

Indigo Palms has produced 2 male cria. The solid white male cria at foot was born 26/11/2011 and 

is sired by champion Aquaviva Titus, our top fawn stud. Indigo Palms is pregnant to Eringa Park 

Saintly, due December 2012.

Helena is the product of respected older genetics incorporating Inti, Ledgers Dream and Sir Titus 

Salt. Helena took championships at shows as an intermediate aged alpaca. 

Helena has produced 5 offspring including her current cria. One has been exported to Europe and 

a second gone on to be a stud male. Her current solid white male cria was born 15/11/2011 and is 

sired by Cambridge Commander.

We bought Verde from a shipment heading to UK, despite her fleece style being different from our 

breeding aims. We are glad we did. 

Her soft handling fleece is still usable commercially and she has produced us 3 excellently 

conformed and fibred white progeny. She “works” best with Cambridge Commander. Her first cria 

(Commandant) performed well in the show ring and was exported to Germany as a stud male. 

Verde has Commandant’s full sister at foot - a solid white Commander female cria, born 

08/12/2011, which should develop well.

Carolina has a fleece that will remain fine and usable at top grade throughout her life. 

Carolina is currently mating to champion Aquaviva Titus and will produce excellent progeny when 

mated to a top fawn male.

Lightening (Lot 37) remains in our herd. The 2 older males have been sold as studs in NZ and 

Schiaparelli has achieved champion ribbons in shows. The third male, Tiberius (Lot 109) has 

definite stud potential.

conformation. Omega was well placed in shows as a youngster. 

Her “star” progeny is NZ Southern De Ville (Lot 48) who has gained Supreme Champion and 

White Colour Champion at shows in NZ. De Ville was sired by the famous Alpine Fiber’s Brutus 

and Omega is currently mating again to Brutus.

She has produced regularly for us since arriving in NZ from Australia and 5 of the 6 progeny have 

been grey. Her last grey female cria has been exported to UK after achieving show success with 

Reserve Champion – grey colour. 

She has a grey female cria sired by a top NZ grey – Alidale Dalwhinnie – born 20/01/2012. She is 

currently mating to new black Australian imported stud, Lillyfield Spades are Trumps.

The first fleece was heavily 

influenced by the suckling period. 

The fleece is currently growing at 

18.2 micron post weaning. 

A typical Brutus offspring displaying a fine, uniform, low guard hair fleece with good density and a 

fine high frequency crimp style. 

The famous Brutus is Rosetta’s sire, and ILR Peruvian Legend and Highlander are heavily in the 

background of her dam, Loretta. Loretta was a show ribbon winner as a youngster. Loretta has 

tended to produce excellent offspring in previous matings, including males that have gone on to 

stud and females that have been exported to the UK.

This fleece has been affected by 

suckling nutrition. As a weaned 

alpaca, the fleece is growing at 20 

micron. 

A dense fleece with a well defined crimp of medium frequency displaying lustre and low levels of 

guard hair. 

Sired by our imported son of Marriglen Mars (3 times Australian National Fleece Champion) from a 

Brutus female, it is not surprising that this female has low levels of guard hair in a dense lustrous 

fleece. 

She is growing out well and is ready for mating.

Valentina still produces a commercial fleece into mature years. It is retaining fineness and 

character. 

From the famous Brutus and one of our top production females, Pandora, who won show ribbons 

in her youth, Valentina performed well at shows as a youngster, gaining ribbons. 

Valentina has given us 4 progeny. She has a solid white female cria at foot sired by Cambridge 

Commander, born 24/01/2012.

Emily is typical of what Aquaviva Titus (a fawn Brutus son) is producing. She has a first fleece at 

15.3 micron, steadying at 20 micron into maturity with well defined dense staples and uniformity. 

Sired from a Conquistador dam, Emily carries the best of Australian and USA genetics. 

She has been awarded 4 championship ribbons in age classes against top line ups of whites and 2 

Best/Champion Fawn ribbons. 

Emily has a dark fawn female cria at foot, sired by Cambridge Commander, who looks excellent at 

a young age.

Loretta is sired by a top imported male from the 5 star shipments into the USA in the 1990’s. 

Loretta is from a championship line. Her dam has given us many champion offspring, and Loretta 

won ribbons herself in her young days, and so have her progeny. 

Loretta has produced 7 offspring, with a tendency to colour. One female has been exported to UK 

and 1 male has gone on to stud. She has a brown male cria at foot born 10/12/2011 sired by 

champion Aquaviva Titus.

Sired by the famous Brutus from an Accoyo Cordero female, Distinction is a typical Brutus fawn 

female. Very few 7 year old females have their most recent fleece winning in shows (over 2 year 

category) as Distinction’s fleece has done. 

Distinction has had 5 cria and previous male cria have been exported to UK, and gone on to stud 

in NZ. Distinction has been used in our appaloosa breeding programme recently, leaving 2 

excellent appaloosa cria, including an appaloosa male cria at foot born 21/11/2011, sired by 

appaloosa stud Chameleon. She is pregnant to Eringa Park Chameleon, due November 2012.

He has a championship ribbon to his name (Reserve Senior Champion, Ellesmere 2009).

Southern Alpacas Stud is home to some of the highest quality and well 

known males in New Zealand and their genetics are throughout the 

alpacas in this tender. 

We have excellent offspring from these males and our top females, and

Championship and Colour Champion ribbons to his credit.

out with a cool, greasy handle, displaying great lustre. 

Sired by the famous Brutus from one of our finer females (Cara Lee), Tarquin is an example of 

what happens when all the (good) genes line up. 

Like all Brutus males he will mature well and become a top stud male anywhere in the world.

Tender updates: Any updates, for example, on births and pregnancy

Tender bid form: All tenders to be on the bid form provided. Any 

comments need to be on this form also. Note that tenders for females 

with female cria at foot should be for both the female and the cria. 

Tenders for females with male cria at foot can be either for just the 

female, or the female with cria at foot (please specify which on the 

tender form). 

Tender currencies: Tenders can be made in NZ$, A$, Euro or Pounds 

Sterling. 

GST (Sales Tax): Tenders will be exclusive of GST, which will be 

added to the tender price. For NZ purchasers the GST rate is 15%. 

For overseas purchasers the GST rate on exported alpacas is 0%. 

Acceptance of tenders: Highest or any tender may not be accepted. 

Advice of successful tenders: Successful purchasers will be advised 

by Sunday 6 th May (NZ time). 

Terms of payment: Full monies tendered must be paid no later than 

14th May 2012. Payments can be made to NZ$ or Euro bank accounts 

and can be deposited direct to the bank account, which will be advised 

to the successful purchaser. 

Finance: Southern Alpacas Stud is willing to offer extended terms of 

payment to suitable purchasers, if required. Talk to us if this is of 

interest to you. 

Insurance: Alpacas once purchased will be at the risk of the purchaser 

from the time of acceptance of tender, and JLT Bloodstock is 

recommended for cover. Special comprehensive export cover can be 

provided. Southern Alpacas Stud can introduce successful purchasers 

to JLT representatives. 

Health: Southern Alpacas Stud is a C10 clear herd in the voluntary 

AANZ Tb testing scheme. Should any purchasers require vet checks on 

their alpacas, Southern Alpacas Stud will be happy to arrange these at 

the cost of the purchaser. All alpacas will be up to date with 5-in-1, 

vitamins, and drench prior to leaving the farm. 

Health protocols: Purchasers, please ensure you are aware of the 

necessary health protocol required at the destination of your purchase. 

Delivery: The sale is ex farm in Christchurch and delivery is at the cost 

of the purchaser. Southern Alpacas Stud will assist in delivery or 

delivery arrangements within NZ wherever possible. Southern Alpacas 

Stud offer full export facilities. Alpacas can remain on Southern Alpacas 

Stud free of charge for up to two months to assist purchasers, until 

delivery can be arranged, or until isolation for export commences. 

AANZ transfers: All alpacas in the tender are registered on the 

International Alpaca Registry (NZ section). Transfers on that registry, 

if required, will be at the cost of the purchaser for unreserved lots and at 

the cost of the seller for reserved lots. 

Fibre: All fibre details relate to tests performed by PML Testing House 

between November 2011 and February 2012 from samples taken at that 

time. All fleece photos were taken in the same time period. Histograms 

and “along the line” graphs are available for specific alpacas on request.
