B1 Skills-based English language teaching charter<br />
A/ The requisite B1 exit skills in the four fields of language acquisition :<br />
Listening skills A student must be able to :<br />
• Understand a short direct or recorded exchange between at least two speakers on a political, social or cultural<br />
subject.<br />
• Understand the general meaning of a 5 minute news summary or current affairs commentary if the delivery is<br />
standard and clearly structured.<br />
Spoken skills<br />
• Present a 5 minute demonstration of a short written (500 words) or spoken document, connecting phrases in a<br />
way that allows for the expression of agreement or disagreement on a topical issue.<br />
• Express hypothesis and establish comparison in order to highlight the advantages of disadvantages of various<br />
options<br />
• Participate spontaneously in short exchanges on familiar topics , accounting for and sustaining a personal<br />
viewpoint<br />
Written skills :<br />
• Write a simple commentary (150 words) on a short oral or written text.<br />
• Take simple notes on relevant points developed during classroom presentation<br />
Reading skills :<br />
• Understand 500 word texts written principally on high frequency everyday or job-related language.<br />
• Identify the essential structure of one such text in order to produce a summary.<br />

B. Language Tools<br />
The following elements will be verified in context as structural support for the communicative skills described<br />
above :<br />
1. Grammar<br />
Nouns and noun phrases<br />
• Revision and consolidation of the expression of quantity.<br />
• Revision of comparison<br />
• Lower intermediate noun / preposition and adjective / preposition combinations<br />
• Exclamation

Verbs and verb phrases<br />
• Revision of the tenses studied in A2<br />
• The three future forms : structure and meaning (present progressive, going to -, shall/will)<br />
• The past perfect tense<br />
• Concordance of tense and indirect speech<br />
2. Sound production and reception<br />
• Introduction to weak forms and strong forms<br />
• Basic intonation<br />
3. Vocabulary<br />
• Development of vocabulary based on the <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>Po</strong> web-based version of Road to IELTS at<br />
http://www.clarityenglish.com/area1/RoadToIELTS-Academic/Start.phpprefix=SCIPO<br />
• The vocabulary enumerated in relation to the different skills proposed<br />
• Training in the correct use of the vocabulary proposed in "Useful Tools for Self-Study Purposes"<br />
(http://supportscoursenligne.sciences-po.fr/e_langues/).<br />

C. Skills-based Assignments<br />
1. Written training<br />
Three written assignments spread over the semester and based on the written exercises required for the IELTS.<br />
Correction of language and contents should involve clear instructions on the structures to be worked on (grammar,<br />
syntax and vocabulary) outside the classroom, using wherever possible "Useful Tools for Self-Study Purposes"<br />
(http://supportscoursenligne.sciences-po.fr/e_langues/). No mark or grade should be given.<br />
2. Listening<br />
Regular training based on the listening comprehension exercises required by the IELTS should be carried out over<br />
the entire semester. The web based material offered by http://www.clarityenglish.com/area1/RoadToIELTS-<br />
Academic/Start.phpprefix=SCIPO should be used for this purpose.<br />
3. Spoken skills training<br />
Role-play work and a short individual oral assignment should be proposed. Problems related to the handling of<br />
contents and structure should be analysed and the appropriate remedial work recommended for student<br />
investment outside the classroom.

4. Reading skills<br />
Guided reading comprehension exercises of the sort required for the IELTS should be proposed at regular<br />
