Rabbi Kushner wrote his signature volume, When Bad Things Happen to Good People (published in
1981 and translated into 14 languages) in response to tragedy in his own life. He was initially
surprised that his message resonated so deeply with faith and communities around the world. He
has just released the complementing study of the Biblical Book of Job: When Bad Things Happened
to a Good Person.
Rabbi Kushner is the author of more than a dozen books on coping with life’s challenges, including:
• When All You've Ever Wanted Isn't Enough: The Search for a Life That Matters
• How Good Do We Have to Be A New Understanding of Guilt and Forgiveness
• Living a Life That Matters: Resolving the Conflict Between Conscience and Success
• Overcoming Life’s Disappointments
• Conquering Fear: Living Boldly in an Uncertain World
The titles themselves reveal his eloquently comprehensive perspective of living a life of significance
in the modern world.
In 1995, he was honored by The Christophers, a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading
messages of hope and understanding, as one of the 50 people who have made the world a better
place in the last 50 years. In 1999, the national organization Religion in American Life paid tribute
to him as their "Clergyman of the Year."
