Embrace Traditional Judaism
BETH AM
Bulletin
June / July 2011 Iyar / Sivan / Tamuz 5771
The future of their Jewish education is in YOUR hands.
Don't let them down – make a generous contribution to our "Dor-to-Dor" campaign.
From April through the end of May – from
Passover to Shavuot – Jewish Tradition
mandates that we recite a b'rakha
FROM
reminding us that it is a mitzva to assign a
number to each of the 49 days as we
OUR
progress through the seven week period of
the Omer. One perspective sees the RABBI
phrase, "our days are numbered" in a
negative context: "We might as well give up
because we are going to die." The tradition
of counting the Omer teaches just the opposite: "Because life will
end all too soon, we need to make the most of each day." As we
count the day, we remind ourselves to make each day count.
Upon the completion of the 49-day period – on the 50th day
when we celebrate the gift of Torah and the guidelines for life it
conveys to the generations – we are released from the mitzva of
physically numbering each day. Following Shavuot, counting
days is a matter of choice. We decide if we want to make the
day count and – if so – how to make the day count.
Teddy Kollek, Jerusalem's dynamic mayor for 28 years,
recommends that we add a 614th mitzva to our religious
heritage: "Thou shalt not be patient." He refers, of course, not to
the wisdom of attaining goals through patience and hard work,
but to the tendency to procrastinate. I remember seeing a cute
refrigerator magnet in Israel that declared the wisdom: "Do not
put off until tomorrow what we can put off until the day after
tomorrow."
The fact is that life gives us one day at a time: each day is a
gift, which is why we call it the present. Sidney Greenberg chides
us for assuming that we have an endless supply of time by
waiting too long to do what is significant, that which gives
significance to our lives. He tells us that we commit the cardinal
sin of waiting too long.
We wait too long to correct the habits of body and spirit that
we promised to change last Yom Kippur, not realizing that the
longer we wait the more entrenched those habits are. We all
know smokers and drinkers who tell us that they could quit
tomorrow if they wanted to. Students constantly promise to start
their major project tomorrow. Many of us promise to diet after
the next simha or vacation, exercise when the weather gets
better, schedule a colonoscopy or
mammogram when work slows down, etc.
Our response should be that the essence of
counting our days is not taking time to do
what is important, but making time for it.
We wait too long to do the little things
that can do so much for someone's soul.
F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose writings spoke to
the disillusioned generation between World
War I and the Great Depression, wrote to a
friend in a time of sadness, "Pray, do write to me. A few lines
soon are better than a three-decker novel a month hence." Why
wait to call or write until you have something to say With all of
the technology available to us, we do not even need to consider
the fact that the postage rate went up or that we need to go to
the post office to let people know that we are thinking about
them. There is no reason we cannot pick up the telephone to call
people close-by or far-away (since we all pretty much have
unlimited calls) or send a text message or e-mail just saying
"hello" and "I hope everything is well."
As we begin the summer months, we should take advantage of
the opportunities that come with a shift in the schedule.
Subscribe to a Jewish magazine and take it with you on vacation,
read a book to deepen your understanding of Jewish Heritage
(see the Summer Reading List on Page 4), attend a lecture, visit a
museum, travel abroad and make sure you find a synagogue in
which to recite Sh'ma, attend a worship service "just because",
engage in a social action project, turn away from Facebook walls
and face friends, use your imagination…
Elissa and I hope that you have the opportunity to enjoy doing
this summer what you might be tempted to put off until next
summer. We wish you a healthy, uplifting summer with your
family, your friends and your congregation.
SHAVUOT: THE LEAST-KNOWN MAJOR HOLIDAY
Shavuot occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan.
The name "Shavuot" (Weeks) reflects the fact that there are
precisely seven weeks – a week of weeks – between the first day
of Passover and Shavuot.
Shavuot is just as holy and just as important as Passover. It is
the Festival of Torah, which celebrates the completion of the
freedom that our ancestors were granted on Passover: true
freedom comes when one is able to study Torah, to use
one's intelligence to create a better world. Accordingly, the
Torah reading for Shavuot is the Theophany at Sinai, the giving
of the Ten Commandments to the Israelites gathered in the
desert.
Unlike Passover, there are no major rituals to concretize the
observance and celebration of Shavuot. There are two
"minhagim" (customs) associated with the holiday: (1) to eat
cheese blintzes or other dairy foods celebrating Israel as the
"Land of Milk and Honey" and (2) to wear bright colors on the
holiday in celebration of summer's arrival.
It is a Yom Tov, a major holiday alongside Sukkot and
Passover, and it should be observed as such. It should be a day
marked by attendance at worship services and gathering together
with friends to study in the evening or through the day.
This year, Shavuot begins Tuesday evening, June 7. Yizkor,
the service of appreciation for the members of our family and
friends, will be recited at the 7 p.m. Tuesday evening service, and
on Wednesday, June 8, at 10 a.m. during the Festival Morning
Service.
Well, we have reached the end of another
school year and now it's time for our
children, families and friends to celebrate
the summer season and take a welldeserved
break from work and studying.
Many of our young people will be moving
into middle and high school and others will
be off this fall to a new life at a university
or, God willing, fulltime employment. As
you know, as president of the congregation,
my primary focus for the past several months has been on the
construction of our new education wing that will allow us to
continue to provide our children with the very best Jewish
education as they prepare to become B'nai Mitzva and fulfill the
mitzvot of Jewish life. I look at our children's Bar or Bat Mitzva
not just as an event or a ceremony representing the end of a
period of study but as a "Rest Stop" on their journey into adult
life. Along with Rabbi Rick and the rest of our educators, we try
to make this journey a meaningful and memorable experience for
our children, the family and our entire congregation!
At Beth Am, becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzva is part of the
Congregation's regular Shabbat evening and morning service.
Each young person participates in conducting the service, which
demonstrates his or her public acceptance to fulfill the mitzvot,
both as a member of our congregation and the entire Jewish
community. By leading that service, reciting the traditional Bar/
Bat Mitzva blessings, reading the Torah, chanting the Haftara and
sharing their own D'var Torah, our young adults strengthen their
connections with community, family, friends, Jewish tradition and
God.
Traditionally, at Beth Am, we recognize individuals who are
passionate about Beth Am and give their
time to make Beth Am such a very special
place by volunteering to help with food
FROM
preparation, Torah reading, singing in the
OUR choir, fundraising, program/event planning,
etc.
This month, I commend all our B'nai
Mitzva, both this year's and prior years', for
their high achievement in their Jewish
studies. Some researchers question the
effectiveness of recognizing very high achievers for the purpose
of showcasing them as role models – they assert that it could
have a negative effect on those who are not recognized. I
believe that putting these individuals in the spotlight will motivate
others to strive for the same level of accomplishment. So with
that said, I would again like to congratulate all our B'nai Mitzva
for doing so well in their Jewish studies at Beth Am. From
Congregation Beth Am, we wish you the very best in all your
future endeavors, Mazal Tov and Y'yasher Koh’khem – your
strength gives strength to the entire congregation.
As summer begins, we continue to move forward with the
expansion of our education facility, which will provide a better
learning environment for future B'nai Mitzva. With your financial
support, we will have our new facility completed soon.
Have a great summer.
ASSIGNING BAR/BAT MITZVA DATES
We are now assigning dates for the 2012-2014 Bar/Bat Mitzva
lists. We plan early so as to give our long-standing members first
access to open dates. If your child was born in 1999, 2000 or
2001, and you have not yet arranged for a date to be reserved,
please contact Rabbi Rick so that your child will not be
inadvertently overlooked. Assignments are made on the basis of
one's 13th Hebrew birthday, with flexibility for summer birthdays
and special circumstances.
A THIMBLE OF THEOLOGY
A Talmudic legend tells that when a child is conceived, Lyla,
the angel of the night, brings the potential life before God. The
angel asks, "Will this child be tall or short" and God decrees its
height. "Will this child be book-wise or street-smart" and God
decrees its intellectual capacity. Then the angel asks, "Will this
child be good or bad" and God is silent — because moral volition
is not a matter of divine decree, not a matter of predestination,
but of individual choice.
INVITATIONS TO
HIGH HOLY DAYS SERVICES
In 2011, the High Holy Days begin at the end of
September.
SERVICES, SCHOOL AND STUDY
IN EAST ORLANDO
SHABBAT: In our ongoing effort to "service" our many
members in Winter Springs, Oviedo and East Orlando, we want to
return to our practice of holding periodic 7 p.m. Friday evening
services at The Tremont on Red Bug Lake Road. Please leave a
message for our Religious Activities Vice President, Mark Davids
(dr.davids@cfl.rr.com) if you are willing to coordinate or help
with this family event.
SCHOOL: We currently have approximately 20 students in our
Tuesday afternoon Religious School program at Fellowship Hall on
Red Bug Road for those families living in Winter Springs,
Casselberry, Oviedo and East Orlando. Please tell your
unaffiliated friends "in the east" who might be looking for
a quality classroom experience. Rabbi Rick and an excellent
staff teach the courses in our East Seminole County branch of our
Religious School. Everyone meets in Longwood on Sundays.
STUDY: We would like to reinstitute our monthly study and
discussion group one Tuesday evening each month. Please
contact Rabbi Rick (rabbirick@embarqmail.com) if you would
like to coordinate and/or attend this program.
BOOK & MOVIE CLUB
The CBA Book & Movie Club will meet on Thursday, June 9 at 7
p.m. It is movie time again and we will be watching a four star
movie called Trembling Before G-d. This movie "is an
unprecedented feature documentary that shatters assumptions
about faith, sexuality and religious fundamentalism. Built around
Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, this film
portrays a group of people who face a profound dilemma – How
to reconcile their passionate love for Judaism and the Divine with
the drastic biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality". This
movie should be the catalyst for a lively discussion. We'll meet at
a member's home. Please call for additional information and/or
directions.
On Thursday, July 21, we will meet to discuss our next book.
We are reading the widely popular and controversial parenting
memoir, The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. She
compares her strict "Chinese" upbringing of her children to the
more laissez-faire "Western" method. Chua stands by her
parenting method but is not afraid to show her failures as well.
We will meet, as usual, at 7 p.m. at Panera Bread on Forest City
Road (across from Costco and next to Walmart).
Hope to see you at both of these events. Everyone is welcome.
COME TO ISRAEL WITH CBA
Many of us are disappointed that our Congregational Pilgrimage
to Israel had to be postponed in light of the personal needs of
those who planned to travel with Elissa and me through Israel.
What is fascinating is that not a single one of our pilgrims
withdrew because of safety issues. As the 60 participants who
have traveled with Beth Am in the past will attest: Israel is one
of the safest places to be! This year's travelers, along with a
number of people who had told us that next year would be better
for them, have promised to "sign on" in the Fall when we
organize our next trip.
We ask that anyone interested in joining us in 2012 please call
the office (407.862.3505) IMMEDIATELY. We hope that
eventually everyone will have the privilege to fulfill the mitzva of
T'mikhat Yisrael, Supporting Israel. It is an incredibly meaningful
experience to fully tour Israel from coast to coast – from the
Dead Sea to the Mediterranean – then up to the Lebanese
border, across to the Golan Heights, then back down to
Jerusalem.
CHALUTZIM — OUR YOUTH GROUP
As the school year is coming to an end and summer is
approaching, I am pleased to report that Chalutzim had a
wonderful year! We held numerous exciting events. Some
highlights from this year were our Hanuka party and
performance, our Tu bi-Sh'vat Iron Chef Competition, our Pesach
bowling activity and our end of the year trip to Rebounderz. We
could not have had as much fun and success this year without
the support from our Beth Am family. On behalf of Chalutzim, I
would like to offer a huge todah rabah to the entire congregation
for encouraging and promoting the beautiful growth of Beth Am's
new youth group.
In the coming school year, we will have so much more to look
forward to. Our latest addition to Beth Am is our Young Adults
Social Group. We had our first event in April at NYPD Pizza where
we enjoyed each other's company while playing a game of trivia.
We anticipate many more get-togethers in the near future and
welcome anyone who is interested to please come and join us in
all our fun.
As June brings us the joy of Shavuot, I wish you all a Hag
Sameah and Kayitz Kef (Fun Summer). ☺
L'shalom,
FROM OUR PRESIDENT-ELECT
The Importance of Education
On May 1, 2011, my three children (triplets) graduated from
the newest state university in Florida: Florida Gulf Coast
University. As we contemplated their future in this economy,
they each expressed an interest in employment possibilities and
furthering their education. My parents also traveled to see this
event and, as we sat at dinner one night, we talked about the
evolution of education for our three generations. The one we
shared in common was Religious School.
There was an overlap in the generations that seemed eerie.
For example, both my wife and mother taught at various
Religious Schools. My mother taught at Bais Yaakov in Baltimore
and my wife at both Beth Am and Samuel Or Olom in Miami. I
graduated the High School Division of the Baltimore Hebrew
College. My kids all graduated from Bet Shira in Miami. Our
secular courses were all different as there was an evolution in
math, science, etc. But our Jewish education remained a
constant. The Hebrew language, biblical studies, current history,
etc. was always a part of each of the three generations.
Why is it so important for our children to have this sense of
who they are Perhaps it is because, as parents, we realize how
important that identity is to them. Each of my three recounted
the Seder they attended this year. Linda and I stayed home
because of my knee replacement surgery and inability to travel.
It was refreshing to me to learn that my three kids, on their own,
felt strongly enough about being Jewish that it was important to
them to attend a Seder.
The years that our children spend forming and strengthening
their Jewish roots are so important to the future of Judaism. The
education they get at Congregation Beth Am is a well rounded,
well presented and well accepted curriculum. Supporting the
education of our children will fortify their Jewish roots and
heritage far beyond what we believe it will do. I just experienced
that feeling some 10 years after they became B’nai Mitzva in
Israel. Was I surprised Yes, I was. Moreover, I was proud that
they elected to continue in the traditions they had learned
without being forced or prodded.
So now it is time for you to support the expansion of Beth Am’s
Religious School. You see, Beth Am’s Religious School supports
the growth of your children in ways that will amaze you one day.
Make a generous donation to help pay the construction costs –
remember, we are building not only walls, but also the future for
our next generation.
SUPPORT EBAY AT CBA
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
While doing your spring cleaning, did you find:
● A gift or gift certificate that you can't use
● A piece of artwork that used to hang in your house
but no longer fits in
● New or gently used non-clothing items that are just
taking up space
● Designer clothing or accessories that never see the
light of day
● Jewelry that you no longer wear
● An impulse buy that you don't use
If so, please donate these items to us – it's a win-win situation.
You support Beth Am and get the tax deduction – we sell the
items on eBay and other venues and use the proceeds to fund
operations, activities and programming at Beth Am.
We thank the people who have given us items to sell and we
thank Herb Weissman, through whose efforts we are raising more
than $300 each month. He has sold electronics, small appliances,
artwork, menoras, candlesticks, etc. So please think of CBA when
you think of disposing of gently used items you no longer need or
use.
Please call Herb (407.774.9695) if you have any questions or to
arrange for pickup of your unused treasures.
MEMORIAL PLAQUES
As we approach the High Holy Days, our thoughts turn to our
departed loved ones. A plaque on the Memorial Board in our
Sanctuary is a fitting way to remember family members whom we
recall with warmth and affection.
To honor the memory of a loved one with a plaque, please
submit your request (accompanied by payment of $360) no later
than Friday, August 5. This will ensure that it is in place in time
for the Yizkor service on Yom Kippur. The form is available in our
office or on the secure Payments Page of our website, where you
can also make payment.
We all know what this is a picture of… and that another
hurricane season is here. In the aftermath of the destructive
tornadoes in Alabama and Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee,
the need to be prepared for this season looms large in front of
us.
CBA's Sisterhood and Men's Club have come together in a
desire to provide not only information about hurricane
preparedness, but also a system to ensure that our congregants
are safe – before and after the storm. We are working with
Lowe's in Altamonte Springs to provide a Hurricane Preparedness
Seminar. The exact date was not available at the time of the
Bulletin deadline, but it is tentatively set for the morning of
Sunday, June 12. Please watch the weekly e-mail message or call
the office for confirmation of the date and time.
In the meantime, if you are a congregant who needs assistance
in making sure your home is ready for the hurricane season,
please contact the office and let us know. Our goal is to provide
help for those who need it. Additionally, if you live alone or have
a condition that might be negatively impacted by power outage or
storm damage, please let us know. We will compile a list of
congregants who we will check on after a storm.
If you would like to help the Men's Club and Sisterhood with
this project, please contact Herb Weissman or Cathy Swerdlow.
Your assistance will be appreciated by all. Let's work together to
ensure that our Beth Am family takes care of each other.
SUPPORT JEWISH EDUCATION AT BETH AM
After months of laying the groundwork – meeting with our
architect, working with our engineer, selecting a building
contractor, working our way through the approval process
with Seminole County and myriad other tasks – we
anticipate that Seminole County will issue the building
permit shortly and we will be able to break ground for the
expansion of our education facility.
However, to make this a reality, we need your financial
support NOW. If you haven't yet contributed, join those
who have already made a donation because they
understand the importance of a Jewish education. If you
have made a donation, please make another.
Whether or not you have children enrolled in our school,
