Welcome to WAC Newsletter, vol.2 (Fall 2010)
Greetings!
Welcome to UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures second annual newsletter! We have had
another successful year of education, creation, and research at WAC fostered by the tight knit community
of faculty, students, and staff with generous support and engagement from our alums and Friends of WAC.
This newsletter aims to be an annual publication for connection, re-connection, reflection, and information
sharing. Through this newsletter, we hope to create and maintain a comprehensive framework for
communication that connects UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures with local, national, and
global communities whether faculty, staff, alumni, current students, or Friends of WAC.
The responsibility we all have as artists and scholars of the arts in the United States and world-wide during
this time of economic, artistic, and cultural landscape shifts has reinforced our mission to foster the
formulation of critical and intercultural insights into the nature of human creativity. All of the WAC faculty
members are engaged in their respective research and projects to further the department’s mission.
Please do read about our faculty’s work and recognitions in the newsletter’s “Awards and Highlights” and
“Faculty Updates” sections. Of major significance is Professor David Gere’s $30,000 Gold Shield Faculty
Prize sponsored by Gold Shield Alumnae of UCLA. This prize is bestowed annually upon a full professor
in mid-career who has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment in undergraduate teaching, public
service, and research or creative activity. Please join me in congratulating David of his well-deserved
award.
I take this opportunity to announce that Gregory Maqoma, founder and artistic director of Vuyani Dance
Theatre from Johannesburg, South Africa, is the Regent’s Lecturer for the academic year, 2010-2011. The
Regents of the UC established the Regents’ Professors and Lecturers Program which permits the
appointment, on a visiting basis, of distinguished leaders from fields outside the traditional boundaries of
the academic world to enrich our instructional programs. The residency will take place in the winter
quarter – February 14-25, 2011. An internationally acclaimed choreographer, teacher, dancer, artistic
consultant and creative director, Mr. Maqoma has taught and presented work all over Europe, Africa and
the U.S. He also serves as Associate Artistic Director of Moving into Dance, Artistic Director of the Afro
Vibes Festival in the Netherlands, and is a founding member of MUISA (Multi Arts Initiative of South
Africa). His residency will be of interest to several departments, including African Studies, Theater, Music,
Ethnomusicology and the Fowler Museum.
Professor Victoria Marks, with the assistance of the department, will coordinate the residency. Workshops
in movement and choreography, class visits, seminars, and public activities, will be planned in consultation
with Mr. Maqoma, the WAC faculty, and interested faculty in the above-mentioned departments. Given
the African focus of several of our faculty and our relationship with the Fowler Museum, this visit will be a
very full and enriching experience for all. More information on the residency will be forthcoming.
World Arts and
Cultures IS:
1. The formulation of critical
and intercultural insights into
the nature of human
creativity.
2. The creation and
interdisciplinary study of
dance and other body-based
modes of performance.
3. Mutually beneficial
engagement with the
diverse cultural and
artistic communities of
Los Angeles.
Announcements of other events, guest residencies, and projects will be placed in our calendar on the
newly designed website set to be launched by the beginning of winter quarter. Watch for information on
the Centers’ programs, and upcoming faculty and student concerts, lecture series, and guest artists and
scholars’ visits.
Despite these trying times, the department is still providing its extra-ordinary programs to our students. As
well, the two centers housed in the department, Center for Intercultural Performance and the Art | Global
Health Center each have brought an immense energy through their respective activities – engaging not
only our students campus-wide, but also in our Los Angeles community and beyond. View the many
accomplishments and accolades of our students, faculty, alumni and staff, as you page through this
Awards & Highlights
DAVID GERE has been Awarded the Faculty Gold Shield Prize
David Gere arrived at UCLA in 1993, and his work in WAC
has earned kudos from students and colleagues ever since. He
was recently awarded the $30,000 Gold Shield Faculty Prize —
sponsored by Gold Shield, Alumnae of UCLA — a prize
bestowed annually upon a full professor in mid-career who
has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment in
undergraduate teaching, public service, and research or
creative activity. Gere received the Gold Shield prize for a
number of reasons, not the least of which is his work with
"Make Art/Stop AIDS", a project he created under the aegis
of the Art | Global Health Center. "Make Art/Stop AIDS" got
its roots in 2004, when Gere went to India on a Fulbright
fellowship to identify artists working to bring attention to the
AIDS epidemic. He quickly found himself in the role of liaison,
bringing together artists from India and the United States.
Gere teaches courses on performance theory, AIDS and arts
activism, but "Make Art/Stop AIDS" is his signature course.
"Since meeting David my first year, he has provided me with
mentorship and opportunities to learn both in and outside of
the classroom," quoted by Arianna Taboada,
2010 WAC Summer High School Dance Theater
Final Report, submitted by Kevin Kane, Program Director
The fifth annual 2010 WAC Summer High School Dance Theatre Intensive was held on June 20 - 27,
2010 at WAC. Directed by Kevin Kane (MFA ’03), the program brought together a diverse mix of high
schoolers to our department. This year a total of 44 students (30 girls, 14 boys) ages 15 - 18 attended,
with participants from nearby Los Angeles communities and beyond: Southern and Northern California,
Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, Miami, and as far away as Hong Kong and Panama. In addition, the
students represented a wide variety of performing arts experiences: beginners to proficient, dancers
trained in numerous forms, theatre performers, spoken word poets, scholars, writers, singers, and
musicians. The creative and social processes of the program allowed the diverse group to bond, live
together, study, play, create, and perform as a collective. This gathering of dynamic young artists
formed what could be considered an ideal first-year WAC undergraduate class.
Collaboration is a keyword of the program-- between the WAC Department, the UCLA Summer Sessions
Institutes and Special Programs Office, and The Flourish Foundation, which this summer made it possible
for 20 students to participate on full scholarship. The intensive proves not only to be an opportunity for
a unique group of young artists to deepen their arts practices and cultural identities at the same time
they are creating a new kind of collective identity, but is turning out to be a successful outreach tool for
the department. Many have expressed interest in applying to WAC upon graduating from high school.
Past intensive participants who are current WAC undergrads and leaders in our WAC community
attribute their experience in the program as the primary reason they chose WAC to continue their arts
education, activism, and scholarship.
Another exciting “pipeline” benefit to the summer intensive program is the participation of the WAC
undergraduate peer counselling staff: these are current WAC undergraduates who engage in all facets
of the program as TAs, peer counsellors, and creative collaborators, as well as taking on the roles of
big sister/ big brother to the high schoolers. This summer, Harry Weston served as the program head
counsellor, with Ashley Cartwright, Leanne Lacovetta, Russell Angelico, Alli Gray, and Marina
Magalhaes as program counsellors. Harry, Leanne, and Ashley attended the program themselves when
they were in high school. It has become part of the program’s continuum that each summer former high
school participants, now WAC undergrads, are able take on these vital counselling positions.
Aptly named, it is an incredibly jam-packed and intense experience. Students attend a stream of classes:
modern/post-modern, hip hop, Hawaiian and West African dance forms, as well as classes in
improvisation and composition, Art as Social Action, acting technique, and daily theatre rehearsals
culminating in a collaborative performance project. Along with Kevin, the program uses the skills and
dedication of WAC affiliated artist/instructors Nehara Kalev, C. Derrick Jones, Jackie Lopez, Sheetal
Gandhi, Carolina San Juan, Keali’i Ceballos, Kathy Deitch, and Olivier Tarpaga - all of whom return to
the program year after year as it inspires the faculty as much as the students. These classes produce
material for the program’s culminating show – ideas and themes exploring such complex issues as
personal and group identity and identifications, the role of the artist in society, and featured intercultural
perspectives and collaboration. It is a process that is truly a team effort.
After eight incredible days of community building and art making, on Sunday the 27th, the students
performed this year’s hour-long final production, entitled The Space Between (as in: the liminal space
between adolescence and adulthood, high school and college, home and away-from home), presented
in the Glorya Kaufman Dance Theatre to a standing-room-only house of parents, family, friends, and
teachers - an audience that mirrored the diversity that was present on the stage. With WAC staff support
of lighting design by Lorrie Snyder, sound by Don Tittle, and events/house management by
Ginger Holguin, the show was a fully-produced multidisciplinary, meta-narrative dance-theatre piece-- a
very exciting, emotional, and inspiring day for all who attended.
In the end, the high school students earned two UC course units, formed meaningful friendships and
bonds that are ongoing. They left WAC thinking and feeling not at all the same as when they arrived.
Our wish is that their experiences throughout the intensive will inform their growth as they move forward
and that they continue to see themselves as artists capable of making an impact within their
communities. Please view the video montage about the 2010 WAC summer intensive program called
The Making of The Space Between, documenting the process and featuring excerpts of the program. It
is posted on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watchv=Ev1ixJowv6I
Participant Nicole wrote,
“…This program has
changed my view of
the world and has
helped me become
a better, more
generous artist and
performer. “
“The performance
yesterday was very
moving, powerful and
FUN! I loved seeing
all the collaborative
work and the honesty
on the stage…
….Paul’s and Martin’s
parents made it to the
show and they told me
that they could see
how the experience
had changed their
sons….– this is going
to have a lasting
impact on their lives,
their ambitions, and
their expectations of
themselves. … I
worried and they
worried about
whether or not they
could handle it, but I
knew that you and
your staff would
embrace them and
appreciate their
unique gifts. They felt
accepted and valued
in a place where they
could hardly have
imagined being a
year ago.” – Carolyn
The Exhibition and SOUNDSUIT
INVASIONS
Initiatives by our faculty and students last year
included the Nick Cave “Meet me In the Center
of the Earth” exhibition with our neighbor, the
Fowler Museum. “Meet Me at the Center of the
Earth” is the largest presentation of work by
Chicago-based artist, Nick Cave, featuring forty
of his “Soundsuits” – multi-layered, mixed-media
sculptures named for the sounds made when the
“suits” are worn. Mad, humorous, visionary,
glamorous and unexpected, the Soundsuits are
created from scavenged ordinary materials -
detritus from both nature and culture – that Cave
re-contextualizes in extraordinary works of art.
The Fowler was the first LA-area museum to
feature Cave’s work and the only Southern
California venue for this traveling exhibition. As
part of the exhibition, the artist provided 20
Soundsuits that were made expressly to be worn
and performed. In an effort to take the
exhibition outside the museum walls, the Fowler
partnered with WAC to offer a course (WAC
174B) taught by guest faculty Rachael Lincoln
(MFA 09) directing students to develop, create,
and perform modular performances throughout
the city and on the UCLA campus using these
Soundsuits. When the museum presented this
idea to artist Nick Cave, he coined the term
“Soundsuit Invasions” to describe these
community outreach efforts. Throughout the run
of exhibition, the Fowler sponsored 11 Soundsuit
Invasions and altogether reached over 28,000
audience members throughout the winter and
spring quarters of 2010. The events took place
in diverse sites ranging from on-campus locations
to street corners in Westwood, to the Los
Angeles Downtown Artwalk and the encounters
at Soundsuits After Dark (a KCRW event on
campus) – a most successful event in terms of
numbers reached and creating an experience for
onlookers that took them out of their everyday
existence.
A Blessing In Disguise: A personal reflection
by WAC B.A. student Ryan Healy June 9, 2010
When I look back on my collegiate experience years from now I know that one of the
most remembered times I will have had was working in the Nick Cave Soundsuits. Over
the course I saw myself transformed both literally and figuratively into something so
much larger than I had ever felt.
From the first day of winter quarter in January 2010, when we met with the designer
Nick Cave and the choreographer Rachael Lincoln, I felt right at home rather than
trying to prove myself as something I was not. I remember as we were putting on the
suits Nick saying, “The suits are loud enough as an image you do not need to make any
sound,” and I remember thinking of how subtle I was going to make the movements in
the suit and how small I wanted to be when I moved. Once the suit was on I gained an
entirely new presence, my body felt an urge to leap and turn and try and be as virtuosic
as possible. I felt that in the disguise of the soundsuit my baggage was checked at the
door and I was free to experiment with finding myself and constantly brightening my
day.
My days were not the only ones brightened, as we performed in an array of venues
such as downtown L.A. and Westwood, even on the UCLA Janns Steps. I witnessed the
faces of people who were watching light up as they witnessed the unexpected. From the
children who had their first UCLA experience on campus, transformed by our
performance, to the homeless men on the streets of Westwood who had been there for
years, something changed in the way they watched; the people watching became so
inspired.
The collaboration between the Department of World Arts and Cultures, Rachael Lincoln,
Nick Cave and the Fowler Museum was such a beautiful experience for the twenty plus
students who got to be a part of this artistic ensemble. From VIP dinners and brunches,
to dancing for KCRW’s Jason Bentley or being the show stealers at the Festival of
Books, our opportunities were limitless. It is not every day you get to be eight feet tall
and colored like a snow cone, nor is it everyday that you are given the opportunity to
make people smile from ear to ear and make strangers dance with one another. It is
these rarities that made the class WAC174B Projects in WAC: Meet me at the Center of
the Earth, one of the greatest experiences I have ever had.
the initial freshman class, and six transfers.
Eight of this class gathered on July 31 st
traveling distances from New York,
Wisconsin, Georgia, northern and southern
California. Angelia Leung met all except
Anne at GKH on that Saturday afternoon –
shared stories, reminisced, laughed, and
toured the renovated building. All were
impressed by the changes, disoriented in
some parts of the building (the entire first
floor had been a large locker room back
then!) and agreed that despite the
conditions of the building back then, they
still managed to have some pretty good
results with their education. Wendy Temple
joined the gathering also – reminding
Darrel she still has some of his stuff
discovered in her office while clearing it out
after she retired at the end of June. After
spending the afternoon at the building
(then called the Dance Building), they regathered
Founded in 2006, the Art | Global Health Center at UCLA seeks to nurture a global
network of artists and advocates working in the realm of public health. Harnessing the
