Students interested in the <strong>Dance</strong> major must identify themselves to the department by the end <strong>of</strong> Fall<br />

quarter, in order to participate in the department supplemental application process during Winter<br />

quarter. Students are considered for admission in the following Spring or Fall quarters. The <strong>Department</strong><br />

strongly prefers a minimum 3.0 GPA in <strong>Dance</strong> courses <strong>and</strong> an overall 2.0 GPA.<br />

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS<br />

You may apply to ONE major per quarter only.<br />

You must be in good academic st<strong>and</strong>ing at the end <strong>of</strong> the application quarter. If you are on academic<br />

probation at the end <strong>of</strong> your previous quarter, you may still apply, with the expectation that your status will<br />

be cleared at the end <strong>of</strong> the current quarter. Minimum progress probation status may affect your change <strong>of</strong><br />

major petition.<br />

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS<br />

Students must be enrolled in at least one <strong>Dance</strong> or <strong>World</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Cultures</strong> course during the Fall quarter in<br />

which the petition is filed, so that their work may be monitored by the <strong>World</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Cultures</strong>/<strong>Dance</strong><br />

(WAC/D) faculty <strong>and</strong> counselor.<br />

Freshman <strong>and</strong> Sophomore Applicants:<br />

Freshmen <strong>and</strong> Sophomores must have no more than 90 quarter units at the time <strong>of</strong> application,<br />

although fewer are recommended.<br />

Applicants must have taken <strong>and</strong>/or be enrolled in at least two courses from:<br />

DANCE 1, 44, 45 (Note: 44 is pre-­‐req. for 45)<br />

Applicants must have taken <strong>and</strong>/or be enrolled in at least one class from:<br />

DANCE 16, 67A, 67B<br />

Junior Applicants:<br />

Junior applicants must have no more than 120 quarter units at the time <strong>of</strong> application, although<br />

fewer are recommended. Competitive applicants will have the majority <strong>of</strong> their School <strong>and</strong><br />

University requirements.<br />

Use this worksheet to prepare <strong>and</strong> organize your materials prior to logging into the supplemental<br />

application website.<br />

All supplemental material must be uploaded to the Supplemental Application website using your<br />

individual pass code by Friday January 11, 2013 (5:00pm PST). This is a strict deadline, please plan<br />

ahead to avoid any unexpected technical delays at the last minute.<br />

The supplemental application process on the website must be fully completed <strong>and</strong> uploaded before your<br />

application to the <strong>Dance</strong> major will be reviewed. Late, incomplete, or hard-­‐copy application material<br />

will not be considered.<br />

Make sure you review all categories before you submit your departmental supplemental application.<br />

You may log in/log out <strong>of</strong> the system as many times as needed during the filing period, but once the<br />

application is submitted, you will not be able to make ANY corrections or additions.<br />

You will receive an email confirmation within 24 hours after you have submitted your supplemental<br />

application. Students will be notified <strong>of</strong> departmental decisions via email after final grades <strong>and</strong> grade<br />

point averages for the current quarter have been calculated. Any updates to your academic record (i.e.<br />

grade changes, removal <strong>of</strong> incompletes, etc.) must be promptly reported to the WAC/D counselor.<br />

Admission into the <strong>Dance</strong> major is contingent upon satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> university <strong>and</strong><br />

department requirements, <strong>and</strong> enrollment availability in our major. Students will be considered on a<br />

competitive basis.<br />

explain why. (~300 words)<br />

2) Essay <strong>of</strong> Intent please address the following points (~450 words):<br />

i. Explain your special interests, aims, <strong>and</strong> the purpose <strong>of</strong> your study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> at <strong>UCLA</strong>.<br />

ii. Explain your career or pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals. You may discuss past experiences that have<br />

contributed to your ambition <strong>and</strong> skills. You may also mention people who have influenced<br />

or inspired you.<br />

iii. Describe <strong>and</strong> comment on a recent choreographic experience discussing what you learned from<br />

the process <strong>of</strong> choreographing a work.<br />

You will have 4500 characters (including spaces) / approximately 750 words. It is recommended that you<br />

write your statement in a separate word processing program, then cut <strong>and</strong> paste it into the web<br />

application.<br />

4. Audition<br />

All applicants must submit an audition either in person or by video. For Change <strong>of</strong> <strong>Major</strong> applicants, an<br />

in-­‐person audition is strongly recommended.<br />

LIVE AUDITION<br />

The <strong>UCLA</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Cultures</strong>/<strong>Dance</strong> will host their <strong>Dance</strong> auditions on Friday,<br />

February 1, 2013. Please plan on being on campus for the whole day, until 5pm.<br />

Please arrive by 8:00 A.M. for check-­‐in.<br />

At the start <strong>of</strong> the day, you will participate in a group class <strong>of</strong>fering a warm-­‐up <strong>and</strong> two styles <strong>of</strong><br />

movement. You are not expected to be experienced in these styles. The faculty will be watching to see<br />

how you take on new movement. Attire should be body conscious <strong>and</strong> in solid, neutral colors. No shoes<br />

will be required for these sessions.<br />

During a portion <strong>of</strong> the morning, the School <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong> Architecture admission staff will conduct a<br />

Q&A session for any parents who will be here.<br />

After the group movement sessions, the individual showings will begin at approximately 10:30 A.M.<br />

For your individual showing, you will be asked to perform a one-­‐minute piece <strong>of</strong> your own choreography<br />

in a style most comfortable to you. We encourage the presentation <strong>of</strong> composition studies that reflect<br />

study/interest in any dance traditions. Customary attire for the dance audition is a leotard or otherwise<br />

body conscious outfit with bare feet. You also have the option to wear a costume appropriate to your<br />

choreography.<br />

Please be prepared to introduce yourself <strong>and</strong> briefly describe the name (if any) <strong>of</strong> the choreographed<br />

piece, the music credit (if any), as well as any additional information you feel might be important to the<br />

faculty committee. The faculty may also ask you questions about your work <strong>and</strong> background.<br />

If you are bringing recorded music for your audition, the department will have speakers with .mp3 ports<br />

(3.5mm headphone jack) as well as CD players for your use at the audition.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> applicants, there may be long periods <strong>of</strong> waiting. You may leave the building<br />

during that time. However, you should be back in enough time to be prepared for your scheduled<br />

showing. There will be a room available with provided materials about our department <strong>and</strong> faculty, as<br />

well as the <strong>UCLA</strong> campus. You may also use this room to warm up.<br />

After your individual showing, you are free to leave. Students will be notified <strong>of</strong> departmental decisions<br />

via email after final grades <strong>and</strong> grade point averages for the current quarter have been calculated. Any<br />

updates to your academic record (i.e. grade changes, removal <strong>of</strong> incompletes, etc.) must be promptly<br />

reported to the WAC/D counselor.<br />

In the event you are unable to attend the audition in person, you may submit a video in lieu <strong>of</strong> a live<br />

showing. The video should be no more than four minutes long. At the beginning <strong>of</strong> the video, please<br />

introduce yourself <strong>and</strong> briefly describe what we will be seeing. You may show studio or in-­‐performance<br />

work. Please include a one-­‐minute piece <strong>of</strong> your own choreography in a style most comfortable to you.<br />

We encourage the presentation <strong>of</strong> composition studies that reflect study/interest in any dance<br />

DANCE AUDITION INFORMATION<br />

<strong>Dance</strong> auditions are scheduled for Friday, February 1, 2013, <strong>and</strong> will be held on the <strong>UCLA</strong> campus in<br />

Glorya Kaufman Hall. We are adjacent to the <strong>UCLA</strong> Anderson School <strong>of</strong> Management <strong>and</strong> the<br />

intramural fields.<br />

The closest entrance to Kaufman Hall is <strong>of</strong>f Sunset Blvd., at Westwood Plaza, which is a signaled<br />

entrance onto campus. Shortly after you turn onto campus, you will see a driveway that leads into<br />

underground Parking Lot #4. If you look to your left as you go down the driveway, you will be looking at<br />

Kaufman Hall. All-­‐day parking is $11 (as <strong>of</strong> 9/1/12 parking fees are subject to change without notice).<br />

Please leave enough travel time to accommodate for traffic, <strong>and</strong> for check-­‐in <strong>and</strong> warm-­‐up.<br />

We will provide water, but you will be responsible for your own food. There are a number <strong>of</strong> campus<br />

eateries nearby where you may purchase meals.<br />
