o May 2012 Assigned coordinator of the four year multi Million Euro CyTera Super Computing Infrastructure<br />

Project led by the <strong>Cyprus</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> involving a 30 Teraflops computer and partners in <strong>Cyprus</strong>, NCSA University<br />

of Illinois and Forschungs Zentrum Juelich Germany<br />

o 2004-2010, conceived and led the implementation of the international Sand and Dust Storm Warning and<br />

Advisory System (http://www.wmo.int/sdswas ), involving: (i) 13 national dust prediction centres, (ii) two<br />

regional nodes for Northern Africa, Europe and Middle East and for Asia as well as supporting steering groups<br />

and centres in Barcelona and Beijing. This led to a recent call for proposals for a 1 M Euro ESA DUE project.<br />

(Estimated total project value including in-kind support of partners estimated at 3 MEuro/year)<br />

o 2002-2004 co-convened with Jőrg Langen of ESA an international panel of scientists to produce and peerreview<br />

the Integrated Global Atmospheric Chemistry Observations (IGACO) THEME Report of IGOS-WMO-ESA<br />

(see book chapters below) that has been used in planning of WMO and GEOSS observation/prediction systems<br />

for services and applied to European Global Monitoring for Environmental Security activities.<br />

o 1998-2000, Chaired and organized a three year international project of WCRP/IGAC on Comparison of<br />

Large Scale Sulphate Aerosol Models (COSAM) funded by the WCRP/WMO-CAS Working Group for Numerical<br />

Experimentation. It involved 10 modelling groups worldwide, a secretariat in Toronto and two workshops. It<br />

laid groundwork for important inputs to the aerosol part of the first IPCC Assessments. See <strong>Barrie</strong>, Leaitch<br />

Lohmann et al, publication below, two other publications resulted. (Estimated total grants and contributions<br />

direct and in-kind 2 MEuro total)<br />

o 1997-2000, Scientific leader of a three-year, 20 scientist Canadian government/university Canadian Climate<br />

Foundation project to add size-distributed aerosols to Canadian global and regional climate models and assess<br />

impacts in climate (Estimated total grants and contributions direct and in-kind 2.5 MEuro/yr)<br />

o 1992-1998, led $3M study of the origins, pathways, sources and occurrence of persistent contaminants in<br />

the northern polar region with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada that led ultimately to an international<br />

protocol on control of persistent organic pollutants and establishment of a global research network monitoring<br />

airborne herbicides and presticides.<br />

o Mid-1990’s, as adjunct Professor at York University Toronto, received NSERC grant for graduate student<br />

support for three years (~30 Euro total).<br />

o 1991-1993, led and participated in a major international study of arctic tropospheric ozone depletion (Polar<br />

Sunrise Experiment 1992) and associated aerosols. See publication below <strong>Barrie</strong> and Platt 1997 (Estimated<br />

total grants and contributions direct and in-kind 2.5 MEuro total including charter aircraft).<br />

o 1989-1992, led Canadian government researchers with university researchers in a joint study of the<br />

methane emissions from northern boreal wetlands called the Canadian Northern Wetlands<br />

Study (NOWES). A NASA/ABLE field campaign was imbedded in the Canadian 3 month study scientists<br />

(estimated total support for the Canadian project was 2 MEuro).<br />

o 1978-to 1990, played a major role in establishing observational networks and modeling in the acid rain<br />

programme of Canada that led to an international US/Canada treaty to control emissions to the atmosphere<br />

o 1980-1999, established and led the Canadian Arctic Haze Research programme of Environment Canada<br />

coordinating with researchers throughout Canada and circumpolar countries. This included personally<br />

establishing aerosol chemistry observations at Alert (82.5 N) in the high Arctic that is still operating and<br />

delivering insight to Arctic climate change drivers (see paper by former Post Doctoral fellow and now<br />

University of Toronto and Environment Canada researcher Gong below).<br />

Honours and Achievements:<br />

o ICSI Highly Cited Scientist Award 152 journal articles and 17 book or chapters (see publications section<br />

below)<br />

o Recognized contributor to scientific assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which<br />

was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007<br />

o February 2009 Yuval Ne’eman Distinguished Lecturer in Geophysics, Atmospheric and Space Sciences, Tel-<br />

Aviv University, two weeks.<br />

o March 2012 Appointed member of Scientific Advisory Committee of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre<br />

o February 2012 Appointed chair of the scientific advisory committee of the European MACC-II project on<br />

track to deliver a GMES atmospheric climate service in 2014.<br />
