<strong>Bus</strong> <strong>Travel</strong> <strong>Behaviour</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>Consequences</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>following</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>extract</strong> from the Diamond Valley College H<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>book re: <strong>Behaviour</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>Bus</strong> <strong>Travel</strong>.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> college has the authority to set behavioural expectations for students travelling to <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> from school<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> to exclude student access to college buses should they not meet those requirements. <strong>The</strong> regular<br />

roles <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> expectations of a classroom apply on the bus <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> students must also follow the directions of the<br />

driver. Diamond Valley College students who travel by bus are expected to act appropriately <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> set a good<br />

example for primary school students who share the service. “<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>following</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>extract</strong> from the School Pl<strong>an</strong>ner re: Tr<strong>an</strong>sport-<strong>Bus</strong> <strong>Travel</strong><br />

• Diamond Valley College bus travellers must carry a valid ID bus pass.<br />

• A bus pass <strong>is</strong> valid only if the appropriate applications <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> payments have been made each<br />

year.<br />

• Fare paying travellers must present their bus pass together with their payment card to the<br />

driver before boarding a bus.<br />

• Students requesting to use the bus service on <strong>an</strong> irregular bas<strong>is</strong> to v<strong>is</strong>it friends etc. must bring<br />

a note <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> seek perm<strong>is</strong>sion from the College <strong>Bus</strong> Co-ordinator<br />

• Any bus pass <strong>is</strong>sued by Diamond Valley College must be carried at all times <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> remains the<br />

property of the College.<br />

Students<br />

• Must wait in a safe <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> orderly m<strong>an</strong>ner, well back from the edge of the road when waiting to board<br />

a bus.<br />

• Must obey safety instructions given by the bus driver, bus superv<strong>is</strong>or or bus captain.<br />

• Must remain seated at all times when the bus <strong>is</strong> moving<br />

• Must not engage in <strong>an</strong>y activity that would d<strong>is</strong>tract the bus driver when driving the bus<br />

• A placement on the Diamond Valley College <strong>Bus</strong> Network <strong>is</strong> subject to the strict adherence to the<br />

College Code of Conduct.<br />

Non-compli<strong>an</strong>ce with <strong>an</strong>y of the above conditions may result in the <strong>following</strong>:<br />

• <strong>The</strong> driver will stop the bus.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> offender’s name <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> full details of the breach will be recorded.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> offender will be carried to school or to their normal drop-off.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> breach will be reported to the principal.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> principal will take d<strong>is</strong>ciplinary measures in accord<strong>an</strong>ce with the guidelines<br />

In rare <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> exceptional circumst<strong>an</strong>ces – <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> only as a last resort – drivers are author<strong>is</strong>ed to eject<br />

passengers from a bus.<br />

Following the report of a relev<strong>an</strong>t incident, the principal will take the d<strong>is</strong>ciplinary action below:<br />

• First offence – verbal warning to student<br />

• Second offence – written warning to parent/guardi<strong>an</strong><br />

• Third offence – one week suspension of student from school bus travel<br />

• Fourth offence – the student will not be allowed to travel on the school bus for the remainder of<br />

the year.<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS/GUARDIANS<br />

Parents/guardi<strong>an</strong>s are responsible for tr<strong>an</strong>sporting their children to <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> from author<strong>is</strong>ed bus-stops <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> for<br />

their safety at the bus-stop while waiting for the bus. Students are to be at the morning bus stop 10<br />

minutes prior to departure<br />

It <strong>is</strong> most import<strong>an</strong>t that parents waiting for bus passengers at a roadside bus-stop stop should wait on the<br />

same side of the road as the bus. Th<strong>is</strong> will prevent accidents.<br />

Parents will notify the Principal or <strong>Bus</strong> Co-ordinator in writing within 7 days of <strong>an</strong>y ch<strong>an</strong>ge of address or<br />

school.<br />

Parents agree to pay the costs of repairs or damage to the bus, or its replacement if totally destroyed,<br />

caused by the v<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>al<strong>is</strong>m or deliberate act of their child.<br />

School bus travel <strong>is</strong> a privilege <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> not a right <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> consequences will follow a breach of these conditions.<br />

It <strong>is</strong> understood that bus travel <strong>is</strong> provided <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> accepted on these conditions.<br />
