“<strong>Monitoring</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Evaluating</strong> <strong>Humanitarian</strong> <strong>Responses</strong>” is a four day residential course delivered by<br />

RedR India which enable participants to learn about the significance, different components of <strong>and</strong><br />

approaches to <strong>Monitoring</strong> <strong>and</strong> Evaluation, <strong>and</strong> develop critical skills to design <strong>Monitoring</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Evaluation system for better humanitarian response.<br />

Aim of the Training<br />

<strong>The</strong> overall aim of the course is to build capacity of humanitarian workers <strong>and</strong> decision makers on monitoring<br />

<strong>and</strong> evaluation for effectiveness <strong>and</strong> quality humanitarian response.<br />

Course Objectives<br />

At the end of the course participants would be able to:<br />

• Comprehend the principles of monitoring <strong>and</strong> evaluation in humanitarian actions.<br />

• Underst<strong>and</strong> the role of monitoring <strong>and</strong> evaluation at every stage of emergency program cycle.<br />

• Outline different approaches for monitoring <strong>and</strong> evaluation.<br />

• Underst<strong>and</strong> the significance of humanitarian response st<strong>and</strong>ards within evaluation <strong>and</strong> monitoring of<br />

humanitarian actions.<br />

• Design monitoring <strong>and</strong> evaluation systems for humanitarian intervention.<br />

Course Outline<br />

During the period of four days, the training course will cover:<br />

• Disaster Context: Terms used in humanitarian response, Disaster Management Cycle, Need for <strong>Monitoring</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Evaluation.<br />

• Project Cycle Approach: Application of Project Cycle, Nature of Projects in <strong>Humanitarian</strong> Response.<br />

• Benchmarks in M & E: SPHERE, ALNAP, Code of Conduct, HAP.<br />

• Assessment: Tool for Planning, St<strong>and</strong>ards for Assessment.<br />

• <strong>Monitoring</strong>: System/Framework, Data Management, Inter-sectoral Data Analysis, Coordination.<br />

• Evaluation: Real-time, mid-term, end-term, impact evaluation, Post-evaluation process.<br />

• Tools for M & E: Introduction to different tools, How <strong>and</strong> when to use, Common challenges <strong>and</strong> solutions.<br />

• Sampling: Need, Techniques, Minimisation of Errors in Sampling.<br />

• Report Writing <strong>and</strong> Presentation: Formats, use of language for report writing <strong>and</strong> presenting.<br />

Methodology<br />

Inter-active, participatory training delivery with an appropriate blend of presentations, lectures, group work, role<br />

plays, scenarios, case-studies, would be adopted. Participants would get an opportunity to share their experiences<br />

in order to underst<strong>and</strong> the ‘voices from field’.<br />
