Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management
This four-day training module prepares participants to work in logistics and supply
chain management during emergencies within the evolving backdrop of the increasing
importance for a coordinated response including ensuring a good logistics-supply chain
management system and the requisite management information system.
Aim of the Training
The overall aim of the course is to build capacity and improve the effectiveness of
logistics specialists and non-specialists, and humanitarian workers on humanitarian
logistics.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course participants would be able to:
• Understand the importance of logistics function in provision of humanitarian
assistance.
• Learn the basics of managing logistics during humanitarian response
• Appreciate the significance of coordinated ‘Supply Chain Management’ for an efficient
and effective humanitarian response
• Address the practical difficulties in Supply Chain Management
• Work towards optimizing the use of scarce resources during emergencies and
enhancing the quality of humanitarian operations

Course Outline
Some of the topics which will be covered in this course are:
• Core Technical Sectors - Examines logistics in relation to the Core Technical Sectors.
• Control Systems - Provides an introduction to the basic control systems that are used in all stages of
the logistics process.
• Storage and Warehousing - Explains the key aspects of warehouse management and a working
knowledge of storage requirements for food, non-food items, cold chain, dangerous goods, key
aspects of storage management and the basic principles of stock control and information flow.
• Supply and Transportation - Develops an understanding of different transport options, the basic rules
of road relief operations, the transport requirements for specialist items and people, and the
documentation associated with the movement of goods.
• Distribution - Develop the ability to establish a workable distribution system. Fleet Management -
Develop an understanding of the principles, management, maintenance and control systems of Fleet
Management.
• Staff Management - Develops an understanding of the processes and procedures involved in staff
recruitment, employment, training, promotion and discipline, termination.
• Procurement - Explains the key components of the procurement process, the elements of a clear
specification and how to produce a tender document and purchase order.
• Contracts - Explains the essential components of a contract, various types of contracts, and writing
contracts for transport/fuel/employment/rental/purchase.
• Security- Develops an understanding of the security in the logistics context.
• Decision Making and Conflict Management.
