This four-day training module prepares participants to work in logistics <strong>and</strong> supply<br />

chain management during emergencies within the evolving backdrop of the increasing<br />

importance for a coordinated response including ensuring a good logistics-supply chain<br />

management system <strong>and</strong> the requisite management information system.<br />

Aim of the Training<br />

The overall aim of the course is to build capacity <strong>and</strong> improve the effectiveness of<br />

logistics specialists <strong>and</strong> non-specialists, <strong>and</strong> humanitarian workers on humanitarian<br />

logistics.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Objectives<br />

At the end of the course participants would be able to:<br />

• Underst<strong>and</strong> the importance of logistics function in provision of humanitarian<br />

assistance.<br />

• Learn the basics of managing logistics during humanitarian response<br />

• Appreciate the significance of coordinated ‘<strong>Supply</strong> <strong>Chain</strong> <strong>Management</strong>’ for an efficient<br />

<strong>and</strong> effective humanitarian response<br />

• Address the practical difficulties in <strong>Supply</strong> <strong>Chain</strong> <strong>Management</strong><br />

• Work towards optimizing the use of scarce resources during emergencies <strong>and</strong><br />

enhancing the quality of humanitarian operations<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Outline<br />

Some of the topics which will be covered in this course are:<br />

• Core Technical Sectors - Examines logistics in relation to the Core Technical Sectors.<br />

• Control Systems - Provides an introduction to the basic control systems that are used in all stages of<br />

the logistics process.<br />

• Storage <strong>and</strong> Warehousing - Explains the key aspects of warehouse management <strong>and</strong> a working<br />

knowledge of storage requirements for food, non-food items, cold chain, dangerous goods, key<br />

aspects of storage management <strong>and</strong> the basic principles of stock control <strong>and</strong> information flow.<br />

• <strong>Supply</strong> <strong>and</strong> Transportation - Develops an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of different transport options, the basic rules<br />

of road relief operations, the transport requirements for specialist items <strong>and</strong> people, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

documentation associated with the movement of goods.<br />

• Distribution - Develop the ability to establish a workable distribution system. Fleet <strong>Management</strong> -<br />

Develop an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the principles, management, maintenance <strong>and</strong> control systems of Fleet<br />

<strong>Management</strong>.<br />

• Staff <strong>Management</strong> - Develops an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the processes <strong>and</strong> procedures involved in staff<br />

recruitment, employment, training, promotion <strong>and</strong> discipline, termination.<br />

• Procurement - Explains the key components of the procurement process, the elements of a clear<br />

specification <strong>and</strong> how to produce a tender document <strong>and</strong> purchase order.<br />

• Contracts - Explains the essential components of a contract, various types of contracts, <strong>and</strong> writing<br />

contracts for transport/fuel/employment/rental/purchase.<br />

• Security- Develops an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the security in the logistics context.<br />

• Decision Making <strong>and</strong> Conflict <strong>Management</strong>.<br />
