Reykjavík, I would
say, is one of the
coziest capitals in
the world. What we have
here is comfortable living
with affordable luxuries to
survive the harsh climate.
Take our outdoor swimming
pools for example. Heated
with geothermal water, they
are more reminiscent of
extravagant spas than mere
pools. There is nothing more
relaxing than taking a long, warm soak in the hot tubs and
steam baths to wind down after a long working week. I
often go on Saturday mornings with my family for an hour
and a half. Don’t let freezing temperatures scare you away.
The water is warm and you can run the shower as long as
you feel like. Here is a little tip: Try the open air changing
rooms. It is simply amazing getting dressed outside in the
frost after a long, warm soak.
The libraries and art museums are another luxury not to
be missed. Downtown you will find the Reykjavík Library
in Grófarhús. You can spend days in there reading the latest
magazines, newspapers and books in many languages.
There are cafés to be found in all libraries and art museums.
I strongly recommend The Reykjavík Art Museum at
Kjarvalsstadir. It is a wonderful place in all seasons, has a
good café and often has concerts, recitals and readings at
lunchtime. You should also visit the Hafnarhús Reykjavík
Art Museum and look at the ongoing Erró exhibition, and
Listasafn Íslands by the pond is simply adorable. Try the
meringue cake in the café there and it will make your trip.
Don’t forget to try a rolled pancake with sugar. That’s
what we eat on Sundays to celebrate that the sun is slowly
moving higher on the horizon.
Nature in the capital is not far away. My favorite walks in
winter are on the southern shore of the west side of town,
on Aegissida as it is called, where you can catch the low
winter sun on a good day and observe seabirds and even
seals and porpoises if you are lucky. Take the walk from
there all the way to Nauthólsvík beach house where you
will find a hot tub. You can even take a dip in the ocean
there which is growing in popularity among locals. The
pond downtown is also a fascinating place, especially if it is
frozen which attracts families on skates.
Reykjavík is easy. That’s why I like it so much. Normally
it does not take more than 15 minutes to get from one
place to another by car. And you can walk all over the
place on scenic paths along the shoreline. So day to day
business is not a burden at all and although we complain
about rush hour traffic sometimes it is only because we are
accustomed to smooth going all the time.
The sun is very low at this time of year and it can be
blinding when you are driving.
If you venture out of the capital for some adventures
then make sure you’ve got the latest weather forecast and
the right equipment for all sorts of weather.
