The name change to SDN Children’s Services Incorporated in 1999 reflected the expansion of SDN beyond Sydney into regional NSW and the ACT. It also captures our progression from centre-based early childhood education and care into child and family support services including early intervention, Aboriginal community programs, and autism and disability support services. SDN Teachers’ College name changes 1931 Nursery School Training Centre, Woolloomooloo 1941 Nursery School Training College, Linthorpe Street, Newtown 1945 Nursery School Training College, Burren Street, Newtown 1967 Nursery School Teachers’ College, Burren Street, Newtown As a result of major national educational reforms, SDN relinquished control of the College to the Commonwealth in 1975. In 1982 the College was amalgamated with the Sydney Kindergarten Teachers’ College to become the Institute of Early Childhood (IEC), which moved to Macquarie University in 1994 and continues to provide early childhood teacher education. SDN’s CEO, Ginie Udy, was previously a lecturer at Macquarie University and has been a Member of the IEC Advisory Board at Macquarie University since 2006. Evacuation Committees were established and the SDN Nursery School Training College ran courses in evacuation and emergency procedures. Identification tags were made for each child and a packed bag sat ready at the door. A school holiday camp in Tahmoor, in the Southern Highlands, was identified as one safe haven and in February 1942, children and teachers were evacuated there by train. It was extremely difficult caring for a group of very young children away from their families in an ill-equipped, communal environment with few provisions, inadequate medical support and limited communication. Joan Fry, a teacher who accompanied the children recalled that, ‘Sixteen children went down with measles in one fell swoop. We rang the doctor in Picton. There was no petrol. He couldn’t come out. We couldn’t get a nurse. We sent 10 children home. Two of the children developed pneumonia so for three days the teachers sat on a mattress in front of the fire eating oranges because the children kept crying and waking up. And I’ll never forget the smell of measles, ever.’ The teachers maintained a steely exterior in miserable conditions but the minute the fear of invasion subsided, the children and staff headed home. It is a measure of the panic that gripped the population that preschool children were separated from their families for an indefinite period. 20 SDN Annual Report 2010

Here is a snapshot of the centre’s fascinating story. 1905 SDN’s first nursery was established at 126 Dowling Street, Woolloomooloo, just a stone’s throw from our current location. It was the first nursery to open in NSW for infants and toddlers. 1918–19 During the Spanish Flu pandemic at the end of World War I SDN Woolloomooloo endeavoured to continue to operate. Services were suspended briefly so the centre could operate as a food depot for the local area. Mid 1920–Oct 1921 SDN Woolloomooloo temporarily relocated to the Anzac Buffet in the Domain, formerly used to house sick and wounded soldiers returning from the war. 1921 SDN moved into the first Welfare Centre for Mothers and Babies at SDN Woolloomooloo’s current location. It was opened in October 1921 by the Minister for Public Health and Motherhood. It was ‘designed to meet the needs of the childlife and the mothers of the community’. 1 1931 SDN established the first training centre for nursery school teachers in Australia at Woolloomooloo in response to an urgent need for ‘properly trained teachers’ to work in the newly founded Nursery Schools. It was aided by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation to enable ‘research and experimentation in educational method and practice’ 2 . 1945–6 At least 30 children were evacuated from Woolloomooloo to Tahmoor during World War II. 1969 The Kindergarten Union section of Woolloomooloo was taken over by SDN. 2010 Today, more than 135 children attend SDN Woolloomooloo Children’s Education and Care Centre each week. SDN’s History Room and the SDN Archive are also located within the SDN Woolloomooloo building. The centre continues to hold a special place in our history. It has long been our dream to preserve the original terrace in Dowling Street as a significant record of the history of Early Childhood Education and Care in Australia, and to operate it as a public space and museum, including our own collection of more than 30 000 historical documents and photographs. 1 The Government Architect’s Annual Report, 1919–20. 2 Sydney Day Nursery and Nursery Schools Association (Inc.)
