MARINE CORPS MARATHON,
USA
Warm temperatures made for slower times but a
great tactical race with a thrilling finish writes Alan
Brookes. A record 22,666 runners entered this 29th
edition, with 16,987 starting and 16,379 finishing
[1000 more than in 2003].
Carl Rundell, a 36-year old from Michigan went
out gunning for a 2:20, despite the conditions,
and by 15km at the Lincoln Memorial he was 90
Dublin
seconds clear of a group of five. Shortly after,
Mexican Jose Miranda broke away and gave chase.
The real excitement began after 24km when a
good threesome of Terry Shea, Texan Air Force
Major Chris Juarez and eventual winner Retta
Feyissa (an Ethiopian now living in New York City)
began to work together to pull in Rundell and
Miranda.
At 39km all five were together, but Feyissa and
Shea gradually pulled away as the group passed
the Pentagon. Over the last kilometre Feyissa got
away to win by 100m.
Miranda came back on Rundell, and in the end,
little over a minute separated the top five. On the
women's side, Mary Kate Bailey, a 29-year-old
marine from Arlington had things all her own way,
winning by almost three minutes.
The Marine Corps Marathon is not an elite race
and there is no prize money. Instead there are
2,000 hand-picked Marines organising the event
with military precision. They hug each finisher and
place a medal around their necks.
This is the self-titled "People's Marathon". It is
about the 38% of participants who are running a
marathon for the first time. They appreciate the
marvellous organization, and perhaps feel less
intimidated in the absence of superstars.
It is about the charities, with teams of up to 1,000
running for their causes. MCM is about the
camaraderie of the Marines and the marathon
experience, about pride and determination.
There are American flags everywhere, and
historical sites crowd the route: the White House,
Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Washington
Monument, the Pentagon, and the Iwo Jima
Monument at the finish line.
MCM is about the celebration of America and the
pain of America [and the pain of the marathon].
Amidst the joy and achievement of ordinary folk
on a wonderful, sunny, record-breaking day,
Race Director Rick Nealis had to replace 500 of his
race crew this year, as that many of his regulars
had been deployed.
The Race Committee worked to get amputee and
burn veterans out on the course to spectate, and
others ran in memory of fallen friends or relatives.
It is mostly Americans who run "America's
Marathon". This year only 835 runners were from
outside the USA and 523 of these were from
Canada. A scant 312 came from true "overseas"
countries.
This could change next year when MCM goes for
30,000 entries in its 30th Anniversary. They will
abandon their normal lottery, in favour of a firstcome,
first-served process, with online
registration opening on 6 April 2005.
If you go, just remember to hug your Marine back
when you finish; Arlington Cemetery is averaging
25 burials a day.
