Last year, in very hot temperatures, the Olympic Marathons were conducted sucessfully, showing that marathon running can take place even under very difficult conditions. AIMS now has close to 200 member races, with about threequarters of these member events being marathons. They are spread throughout every corner of the globe, including some - like the North Pole Marathon, or the Sahara Marathon - where extremely difficult conditions prevail. It would seem that the popularity of running knows no bounds. Over the last year AIMS has gained members from many places where mass running events had previously not existed. The physical conditions may have been less hostile than in Athens, but the economic or cultural conditions had not previously favoured the emergence of mass running events. Now, both in Africa and Asia there are growing numbers of increasingly high-profile events which help to spread the word around the world. The word is that running is for everyone. Also over the past year, IAAF has accepted and promoted the idea of world records for road running events, subject to some restrictive criteria. This also helps in the promotion of road running as a global sport. Strengthened by these trends, road running is entering a new era. Together, let's run into it. New AIMS Members ■ THE FIVE TOWERS MARATHON (DEN) takes place on 3 April 2005 ■ THE TORAY CUP SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL MARATHON (CHN) has just held its ninth edition last November (see Results section). The race has grown to nearly 1000 runners with 191 of them coming from 36 countries ■ THE ATLANTA MARATHON & HALF (USA) has been run over the last 42 years in the city which hosted the 1996 Olympics. Only 10 foreign runners were among the 640-strong entry for the marathon (representing 5 countries), but several thousand runners contested the associated half marathon. The 43rd running is scheduled for 24 November 2005. ■ THE MARATONA SANT ANTONIO (ITA) is run in the North Italian city of Padua at the end of April. Over the last five years it has built up to 3000 runners, with 241 foreign runners coming from 25 countries. ■ THE WALT DISNEY WORLD MARATHON (USA) celebrates its 10th anniversary (11th edition) on 9 January. The race runs between and through the major amusement parks of the Walt Disney World site. ■ THE MYRTLE BEACH MARATHON (USA) has, over the last seven years, been conducted largely as a local event, with only 50 of the race’s 1700 entrants coming from three countries outside the USA. There is great potential for this Atlantic seabord settlement in South Carolina to attract an international following. Held in mid-February, it is accessible through international airports in Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte (NC). New Associate Members ■ THE LAHORE MARATHON (PAK) will be held for the first time on 30 January, with a 10km race and 5km fun run, all starting and finishing in the National Sports complex on the south side of the city. The Marathon route passes through the centre of this historic Punjabi city. ■ THE ING BRUSSELS MARATHON (BEL) brings international marathon running back on to the streets of the Belgian capital on 9 October, after an absence of several years. ■ THE CARLOS LOPES GOLD MARATHON MEMORIAL (POR) celebrates the achievements of Portugal’s foremost distance runner. This new race takes place for the first time on 17 April. ■ THE CYPRUS APHRODITE HALF MARATHON (CYP) has built up a strong international following over its 10-year life, with two-thirds of the 600-strong field coming from 16 overseas countries. The next race takes place on 27 November. ■ THE RWANDA PEACE MARATHON (RWA) takes place on 15 May. The race aims to publicly demonstrate that the Rwandan genocide has now been consigned to history, as the nation rebuilds. One of these performances was Paul Tergat’s World Record marathon of 2:04:55 in Berlin, for which he also received the AIMS/CITIZEN World’s Fastest Time award. DISTANCE RUNNING From this edition Distance Running will be printed quarterly, with four editions published annually in January, April, July and October. This edition of Distance Running is dated January- March 2005. It covers races that took place in the last third of 2004, from the end of August 2004 until mid- December 2004. The next edition will be dated April-June 2005, and will cover races that take place between December 2004 and March 2005 Subsequent editions of Distance Running will be published July and October, covering the periods April-June and July-September. The period October-December 2005 will be covered in the edition published a year from now, in January 2006.
