JOONGANG SEOUL
MARATHON, KOREA
It was chilly (6ºC) but perfect weather for Pavel
Loskotuv, defending his 2003 JoongAng Seoul
Marathon title. During the first half he was only
European of the 19 invited athletes from six
counties who tried to stick with the leading group.
Others included Mbarek Hussein, winner of the
2002 race and another favoured athlete, William
Kiplagat.
It was not until 39km that the Estonian overtook a
pacemaker who kept a comfortable distance
ahead of the rest of the field all the way from
30km. Ruke Metto had never finished a marathon
before but, seeing that nobody was capable of
following him closely after 30km, made his bid for
victory.
Then Loskutov came by, the first of four who
passed Metto before the finish line inside the
Olympic stadium where the Seoul Olympic Games
had been held in 1988. Loskutov’s time fell short
of the 2:09:15 course record that he had set the
previous year.
TORAY CUP SHANGHAI INT’L
MARATHON, CHINA
About 15,000 runners participated in all events,
the most entries since 1996. There were nearly
1000 finishers in the marathon, and 191 of these
were foreign runners, coming from 36 countries.
In the women’s race Yanan Wei beat 107 others
and surpassed the winning time of the previous
year. About 3,000 athletes ran the half marathon.
Weather was quite good for the runners: light
drizzle, 14-17ºC and very little wind.
MARABANA MARATHON &
HALF, CUBA
The 17th edition of this now classical
international race, the foremost marathon in the
Caribbean, welcomed 2,300 runners - including
394 of them coming from 59 different countries.
Emperatriz Wilson's marathon victory was her
fifth, making her the most prolific winner of this
competition. The “Maracuba” race series is held a
day before Marabana, in as many as 3000 cities,
towns and villages spread across Cuba.
Radio ensures a common start time and the total
participation reported was 1,343,261 - probably
the most massive running event in the world.
CORPORE 10km,
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL
The race incorporated wave starts for the first
time, giving more space and comfort to the 11,000
runners.
It was a new, faster, course, incorporating some of
the main thoroughfares of Sao Paulo, including
two tunnel sections.
A drumming band positioned in the tunnel
created tremendous sound, which seemed to
motivate some of the runners.
The Kenyan opposition in the men’s race proved
too strong for the home runners. Lawrence
Kiprotich and Mathew Cheboi left the opposition
behind at 8km.
In the women’s race Maria Baldaia started fast
and then kept on the shoulder of the Kenyans
Peninah Limakori and Teresia Kipchumba. She
pulled away in the final kilometre for a deserved
win.
