5. FILL CRATERS<br />

Craters at the end of a weld may crack unless filled. The cracks may then run back into<br />

previously sound metal. Craters may be filled by back stepping, or reversing direction for<br />

about 1/2” at the end of a weld.<br />

6. HEAVY STARTS<br />

Starting beads should be filled in to minimize chances of cracking.<br />

Starts should be as heavy<br />

as the rest of the bead.<br />

Thin, weak starting beads<br />

may crack.<br />
