8.2 Water Sources for Irrigation
Tanzania is endowed with abundance of water resources like rivers, lakes and
groundwater. The distribution of water resources is not uniform; there are areas
with immense water resources while some other areas are dry. These being the
case, efforts were made by construction of dams, shallow and deep wells. These
interventions are augmented by affordable and appropriate technologies like drip and
sprinkler systems, wind and solar powered pumps, and treadle pumps. Furthermore,
water-harvesting technologies are being developed to harvest and conserve run-off
water from slopes and ephemeral streams.
