The tarmac roads are those connect<strong>in</strong>g the commercial city of Dar es Salaam<br />

with other regions (Morogoro, Dodoma, Ir<strong>in</strong>ga, Mbeya <strong>and</strong> Ruvuma) located<br />

<strong>in</strong> the southern highl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> central part of the country <strong>and</strong> neighbour<strong>in</strong>g<br />

countries of Zambia <strong>and</strong> Malawi. Others connect Dar es Salaam with nothern<br />

regions (Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, <strong>and</strong> Manyara) <strong>and</strong> neighbour<strong>in</strong>g countries<br />

of Kenya <strong>and</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a. Tanzania is currently <strong>in</strong> the middle of a ten year Integrated<br />

Roads Programme, which is designed to upgrade 70 percent of the country<br />

10,300 kms of ma<strong>in</strong> roads <strong>and</strong> build some 3,000 kms of new roads.<br />

1.3.2 Railways<br />

Tanzania has more than 3,685 kms of railroads. There are two railway networks<br />

which provide both freight <strong>and</strong> passenger services, a 2,715 kms l<strong>in</strong>e l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Dar es Salaam with the Central <strong>and</strong> Northern regions operated by a private<br />

company known as Tanzania Railways Limited (TRL) <strong>and</strong> 1,860 kms of which<br />

900 kms is <strong>in</strong> Tanzania l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Dar es Salaam with the southern highl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

regions to Kapiri Mposhi <strong>in</strong> Zambia operated by Tanzania Zambia Railways<br />

Authority (TAZARA). TAZARA has a capacity to carry 2.5 million tonnes of<br />

mech<strong>and</strong>ised cargo per year.<br />

1.3.3 Airports<br />

Tanzania has three <strong>in</strong>ternational airports, Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport<br />

(MNIA), Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) <strong>and</strong> Zanzibar International<br />

Airport (ZIA) <strong>and</strong> more than 50 official airports <strong>and</strong> airstrips. Major flights <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> out of Dar es Salaam <strong>in</strong>clude the KLM, Swiss Air, British Airways, Gulf<br />

Air, Emirates Airl<strong>in</strong>es, South African Airways, Kenya Airways, Quatal Airways<br />

<strong>and</strong> Egypt Air. The airports are equipped with modern facilities to provide<br />

excellent services both to passengers <strong>and</strong> cargo operators. The ma<strong>in</strong> local<br />

air transport operators are Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), Community<br />

Airl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> Precision Air which connect to almost all regions <strong>in</strong> the country.<br />

There are also small air transport operators that connect to tourist attraction<br />

sites, wildlife reserve hotels <strong>and</strong> towns.<br />

1.3.4 Sea Transport<br />

The Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) operates three major ports: Dar es Salaam,<br />

Mtwara, <strong>and</strong> Tanga <strong>and</strong> three m<strong>in</strong>or ports of Kilwa, L<strong>in</strong>di <strong>and</strong> Mafia. Dar es<br />

Salaam port has eight deep water berths for general cargo, three berths for<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>er vessels, eight anchorages, a gra<strong>in</strong> term<strong>in</strong>al, an oil jetty <strong>and</strong> onshore<br />

moor<strong>in</strong>g for supertankers. The Dar es Salaam port has <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic capacities of<br />

dry break bulk cargo of 3.1 m tonnes of conta<strong>in</strong>erized cargo <strong>and</strong> 6.0 m tonnes<br />

of bulk liquid. It h<strong>and</strong>les cargo for Zambia, Burundi, Rw<strong>and</strong>a, Ug<strong>and</strong>a <strong>and</strong><br />

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).<br />
