A June 6 study concerning
the wants of
Southmgton voters conducted
by The Observer
has attracted
only three replies, adding
little new to a
similar study done by
the town Republicans.
published in that same
paper
Republican Town
Committee Chairman
Bruce Cotton took the
slight response as a
good sign
"I think the low return
is an indication our
original results revealed
what people really
feel,with not much they
want to add one way or
the other." Cotton said
The lov, response was
no indicator of potential
November election turnouts,
Cotton felt
"I think there will be a
relatively high turnout
if voters are given a
clear choice of plat-
forms." he said
The 74-year-old
Democrat respondent
joined the two unafhhares
planning and enforcement
"The Town Planner
the nightmare he envisions
for the town,"
the Democrat replied
School Board reallocates budget
by Beth Utke
staff writer
Beard of Education
members approved a
budget reallocation
presented to them by
the board's finance
committee.
Last Thursday, school
board members made
official, in a six to three
vote, the pro ..al given
them by the committee
which finalized it's
report three days
earlier
At the beard meeting,
members Richard
Montague, Janice
Hagstrom and Carol
Kelly cast nay votes on
reallocation All three
suggested board
members request addltlonal
funds from the
town Board of Finance
to prevent any shortfall
in the budget.
Without reallocation
of $124,698 for salaries
and $12,390 for benefits,
school officials reported
they would encounter a
deficit in those areas
Currently, the
estimated student
enrollment for the 1985-
86 year is higher than
lanned when the
udget was formulat d
in January and okayed
in June.
Under the state
mm mum expenditure
requirement (MER),
the school system must
spend per pupil
Estimated enrollment
figures now call for
about 198 students in the
eStem, which increas
amount which must
be spent in total, thus it
affects the entire
budget
Jack McBride,
chairman of the finance
committee, said the
board should wait until
the official enrollment
figures are determ|ned
in October, and, if need
be, then appreach the
Beard of Finance for
additional funds
Applying th MER of
$3,330 per student, with
an estimated
enrollment now at
$6,447, a budget must
total $21.468.510
Currently, the approved
operating budget for the
coming school year is
$21,258.454 The dif
ference between those
figures is $210,056
out that salaries are
