Farewell . . . ! 

Next weekend, our Catholic Community of Manistee will 

say farewell to Kelly Niles, who has graced us with his 

music skills and liturgical knowledge for the past ten 

years. 

Kelly has decided, after over thirty years of music 

ministry within the Catholic Church, to retire as our 

Director of Music and Liturgy. On behalf of the CCM/ 

MCC staffs and the entire Catholic Community of 

Manistee I express our thanks to him for his commitment 

and dedication in this important ministry of the Church.

As we say farewell to Kelly, we also will say welcome 

to Ryan McCauslin who will begin his service as the 

Director of Music and Liturgy on June 1 st . 

son Isaac in 2012, and have another one on the way. 

Ryan writes: “We are very excited to be a part of the 

Catholic Community of Manistee, and look forward to 

everything that the area has to offer.” Ryan, Chelsa, 

and Isaac, will be moving to Manistee this coming week. 

Memorial Day – 

a time to remember and give thanks 

We take time this weekend to remember our beloved 

dead, especially those who gave their lives for our 

country. I invite you to take a few moments to pray for 

them, and for their families. Perhaps take a walk 

through Mt. Carmel Cemetery and see the many flags 

blowing in the wind, marking the graves of these noble 

men and women. 

While speaking about Mt. Carmel Cemetery, I hope we 

all remember that this sacred and consecrated place 

where our beloved rest until the Second Coming of 

Christ needs to be treated with respect and dignity. 

It has come to my attention that some individuals, hopefully, 

not members of the CCM, have been dumping 

their yard clippings at the back edges of the cemetery. 

The north side of the cemetery is private property, and 

we need to respect their land. The west side, where the 

woods is located is part of the cemetery. Some people 

have been throwing old Christmas wreaths and other 

grave decorations into the woods, and I ask that this be 

discontinued. It seems to be disrespectful to our dearly 

departed, and secondly, it is littering God’s creation. 

There is a dumpster near the maintenance building 

where those items can be disposed of, or take it home 

or to the city recycling center off Washington Street. 

I want to again remind the members of our Catholic 

Community of the guidelines for our cemetery. 

Ryan grew up in Cheboygan, MI. In junior high he 

began to get involved in the music ministry at youth 

group meetings, and from there started his involvement 

with weekend liturgies. He began what would later become 

his career as a substitute organist in high school, 

filling in for various organists around the Straits Area. 

In 2009 he moved to Prudenville and for the last four 

years was the Music Director at Our Lady of the Lake 

Catholic Church. While in Prudenville, he met his wife 

Chelsa and they married in 2010. They welcomed their 

Mt. Carmel Cemetery Rules 

Mt. Carmel Cemetery, located at the corner of Maple 

and Merkey Roads in Manistee, is hallowed ground 

and shares with all sacred places regulations to insure 

reverence, neatness, and order. Our common responsibility 

for the upkeep of our cemetery calls for all to 

observe these regulations: 

• Artificial arrangements are only permitted in an urn 

or pot aligned with headstones. Other arrangements, 

such as wreaths, are only permitted during winter 

months, from November 1 to April 15. At all other 

times they will be removed. 

• No planting of trees or shrubs is allowed on any lot.

• All flower urns, pots, shepherd 

hooks, and statues must be in 

line with markers or monuments. 

Statues must be of a religious 

type acceptable to the Catholic 

faith. 

• Planting of live flowers in the 

ground is permitted within an 

area of 14 inches from the grave 

marker or monument; borders 

must be within this area. The 

watering of live flowers is the 

responsibility of the family. 

• Refuse, such as plastic, cardboard, 

metal, etc. is to be 

removed from the cemetery; 

whatever refuse you bring to the 

cemetery, you must take back 

with you when you are finished 

decorating. 

• Roller-blading, skateboarding, 

riding horses, walking dogs or 

other pets is not permitted on 

cemetery property. 

I thank all of those who continue to 

keep this sacred space a place of 

respect and dignity for our beloved 

dead, and an environment where 

we can reflect upon their lives, and 

their new life in the Kingdom of 

Heaven. Eternal rest grant unto 

the, O Lord, and let perpetual light 

shine upon them. May their souls, 

and the souls of all the faithful 

departed, rest in peace. Amen.

Catholic War Veterans Stephen T. Duchon Post 1847 

extends a grateful thank you to members, spouses, 

and friends who placed over 1,275 American flags on 

veterans’ graves in Mount Carmel and Trinity cemeteries 

on Monday, May 13th. An inspiring sense of camaraderie 

was experienced by those who participated in 

honoring deceased defenders of America.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP 

Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity: one 

God in three persons. In the history of the Church 

many scholars have described the Trinity, but none 

can provide a final definition because the Trinity is 

beyond words. However, the scriptures show the 

action of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. St. 

Paul calls us the Body of Christ and says that we, as 

believers, are in relationship with God - equally 

called, equally chosen, equally loved. Yet within that 

equality, God has given each of us different gifts, 

different abilities and different callings in life. The 

only thing that God asks is our love in return, and 

that we use what God has given us. It is that simple.

Ever wonder what teens experience during the annual 

Christian Leader-ship Institute (CLI)? Now's your chance! 

All adults are invited to attend the Adult Christian Leadership 

Institute weekend. The week-end will begin at 6:00 

pm on Friday, June 14 and will conclude at 11:00 am 

on Sunday, June 16. The retreat will take place at the 

Augustine Center in Conway. Cost for the weekend is 

$120 and includes 2 nights lodging and 4 meals. Topics 

to be covered include leadership styles, communication 

skills, group dynamics, and conflict resolution. Registration

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY 

God our Father, who by sending into the world 

the Word of truth and the Spirit of sanctification 

made known to the human race your wondrous 

mystery, 

grant us, we pray, that in professing the true faith, 

we may acknowledge the Trinity of eternal glory 

and adore your Unity, powerful in majesty. 

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, 

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy 

Spirit, 

one God, for ever and ever. 

Reflection: 

Although the Gelasian Sacramentary had a preface 

in honor of the Trinity, this feast was not added to the 

universal calendar until 1334 by Pope John XXII while 

in Avignon. The present prayer is an amplification of 

the prayer found in the 1962 Missal. 

It begins by addressing God as Father, the only 

Sunday Collect which addresses God as Father, a 

unique understanding of the Trinity as Father, Son, 

and Holy Spirit. The Son is addressed as the Word 

of truth and the Spirit as the Spirit of sanctification, 

both sent into the world by the Father to make known 

to the human race the wondrous mystery of the 

essence of God as Trinity. 

There is no mention of the Son being involved in the 

sending of the Spirit, no filioque controversy, which 

up until our time was a source of irritation to the 

Orthodox. The prayer continues by declaring that in 

professing the true faith, that of God as a marvelous 

trinity of persons, we might acknowledge both the 

eternal glory of the Trinity and adore its powerful 

unity. 

Prayer: 

May our prayer echo the Communion Antiphon: that 

we may be children of God who have in our hearts 

the Spirit of the Son who cries out Abba, Father. May 

we be a community of persons, united in the grace of 

the loving Trinity, a community of love and unity, who 

know that God is our Father and the Father of all.
