Spark_Lab
In partnership with the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA)
Year of partnership commencement: 2009
Spark_Lab, informed by the Growing Future Innovator’s Scoping Study, educates for
innovation through the contemporary arts across the school curriculum.
During the pilot (2010–2013), PICA
partnered with a diverse group of
schools and engaged with more
than 75 educational institutions to
develop skills such as creativity,
self-efficacy, leadership and risk
propensity, to foster a more
innovative workforce.
2014 marked the beginning of the
implementation phase of
Spark_Lab. The Spark_Lab
activities include 60 school tours
and 18 Spark_Lab workshops,
particularly the Prehistoric
Soundscape in partnership with
WA Museum and the Metropolitan
Redevelopment Authority;
Sounds, Symbols and Science
in collaboration with Scitech;
climbing workshops associated
with the exhibition Kinesphere;
Chunky Move Professional
Development with Warnbro
Community High School and
AWESOME Arts school tours.
The Noongar Doll Workshops
book, featuring the work of the
Roseworth PS students, was
published for distribution to the
school and stakeholders.
Warnbro Community HS is
Spark_Lab’s partner school in
2014/15. Their specialist programs
include advanced technology
and design, adventure recreation
and creative arts. A second
partner school will be confirmed
to commence in 2015. Partner
schools will design and implement
their programs by working with
PICA artists and projects.
In 2015, a Spark_Lab Alumni
program will be developed to
ensure continued engagement
with innovative ideas. An
evaluation strategy will be
embedded in the schools program,
in consultation with partner
schools.
