Chairperson’s Report Annie Fogarty AM Executive Chairperson The power of the collective is at the heart of our community and education and encapsulates the work of the Fogarty Foundation. So much of what we do involves bringing people together, sharing ideas and enabling them to achieve much more than if they were working alone. These elements are essential to many of the programs that we support, and in the way in which we connect with our partners. When committed people come together to share ideas – great things can and do happen! Fogarty EDvance brings the different sectors of education, business and philanthropy together. The program builds the capacity of schools in low socio-economic communities to address the many challenges of disadvantage. The WA Department of Education and Catholic Education Office partner with us in EDvance, which is now in its third year of operation and working with 20 schools. We are already seeing improvements in strategy setting and change within the schools, as well as early indicators of enhanced learning outcomes. In 2014, Fogarty EDvance received the Macquarie Social Innovation Award, which will enable us to build a sustainable model and spread our learnings further into the education sector. The Award also recognises the contribution that the collective of quality people have made to this project, one that we all believe can deliver improved educational outcomes to students. With our partner UWA, it has always been our vision that by providing the right environment and support to the UWA Fogarty Scholars, they will inspire, encourage and work with each other to create impressive outcomes – which they have done. This past year they have continued to excel at university, within their chosen professions and in their community activities. Two Scholars who have achieved recognition for their work are Amy Steinepreis who is the 2015 WA Rhodes Scholar and Tom Williams who has been awarded a Sir John Monash Scholarship. Establishing CoderDojo WA has been a tremendous venture into digital literacy and is creating a pathway for young people to learn the skills they will need to succeed in the 21st century. We now have nine Dojos operating and plan to have more in 2015 as we expand into regional Western Australia. The Dojos bring together ninjas (7–17 year olds) and mentors to learn to code as well as build a coding community. CoderDojo WA exemplifies the power of the collective – people coming together to work within a new way of learning, drawing on open source material and encouraging self-discovery and peer-to-peer learning. It also promotes skills for work in the future including problem solving and flexibility, and is enhancing enquiring minds who are willing to take risks and be creators rather than consumers of technology. The Foundation is working with the power of the collective to prosper and progress. I thank my Trustees, the professionals who provide pro bono service, volunteers, mentors, the staff at 3rd Wave Capital and all the people and organisations we work with. A special thanks to Kathryn Clements who has done an outstanding job as our Executive Officer. We welcome Robyn King who will be taking on this role in 2015, and Caitlyn Fogarty who will also be working with us this year. We enter 2015 with clarity and enthusiasm for the programs with which we are involved, our plan to provide further support for teachers and the opportunity to continue strengthening education in Western Australia. Executive Offi cer’s Report Kathryn Clements Executive Offi cer The Fogarty Foundation has had a vibrant 2014 which has seen us expand our current initiatives and continue to support innovative ideas in education in Western Australia. The University of Western Australia Fogarty Scholarships program has continued to support the next leaders of our State. There were many highlights in 2014, including the inaugural Inspiration and Insight event hosted by the Fogarty Scholars’ Association, which offered an opportunity for scholars to mix with current leaders and discuss the potential for technology to enhance our ideas. The Foundation’s major Equity in Education initiative, Fogarty EDvance, offered the School Improvement Program to a new cohort of schools. This cohort is located in the south metro region of Western Australia, and attracted the support of a new giving circle, the FED Collective. Fogarty EDvance also welcomed Ingrid Sealey to the team at the start of 2014. CoderDojo WA also experienced a significant growth year in 2014. Karen Wellington joined the team as our CoderDojo WA Coordinator and expanded the program to nine Dojos across WA, providing free coding and programming clubs to approximately 200 ninjas (students) each term. CoderDojo WA also hosted its very first ‘girls only’ workshop for over 70 girls and launched a new website. We thank our CoderDojo WA Principal Partner, Scitech, for supporting the program in 2014. Thank you to the Foundation’s project partners for a sensational 2014 – The University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University, The Smith Family, PICA, Roseworth Primary School, Big Help Mob, Manna Inc and Mission Australia. We are excited to welcome three new partners to our portfolio in 2015 – The School for Social Entrepreneurs, Holyoake with DRUMBEAT Quest and the Dyslexia SPELD Foundation with The BOOST Program. It is wonderful to work with each of these organisations as they continue to demonstrate the ‘ripple effect’. I would like to thank Annie Fogarty and the Foundation’s Trustees for their support since I started with the Foundation in 2012, and I extend a warm welcome to Robyn King who is taking over the role of Executive Officer in 2015. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a dynamic organisation that continues to challenge the status quo in Western Australia. I look forward to seeing many more exciting developments for the Fogarty Foundation in the years to come! I strongly believe in the Foundation’s vision, to achieve a positive flow on effect in the Western Australian community through advancing social change through education, and I look forward to being part of this vibrant organisation and contributing to the Foundation’s partnerships, initiatives, ventures and programs. As the Foundation continues to connect people and ideas in innovative ways, I eagerly anticipate the new challenges and outcomes that 2015 will bring!
