International Protection of Human Rights Name of Lecturer: Regina Valutytė Faculty: Faculty of Law Department, Contact Details: Department of International and EU law, email: r.valutyte@mruni.eu Language of instruction: English Level of Course Unit: Bachelor, Master Required prerequisites: None Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit By the end of the course, students should: • understand the relationship between international law, domestic law and the international law of human rights; • map the development of human rights law; • be able to identify problematic issues concerning the implementation of the rights of minorities, women, children, refugees and internally displaced persons; • be able to solve practical tasks related to the implementation of the rights established in ECHR; ECTS credits: 6 Contact hours per week: 3 Semester: Autumn/Spring Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods: 40% of study time is dedicated for lectures, 60% of study time is dedicated for practice sessions. The main methods of studying are training based on identification and analysis of legal problems in legislation (international instruments, EU law and national legal acts) and practice, case studies, discussions among peers and in groups, peer reviews, analysis of international jurisprudence; simulation of judicial proceedings. Assessment methods and Criteria: Active participation in practice sessions (30%), written exam (70%). Course content: The course is specifically designed to address the needs and interests of students of international studies, in particular, those engaged in the study of human rights protection. The course begins by examining the international systems of protection of human rights and the development of human rights law. Second, the course introduces the International bill of rights and is aimed to disclose the main features of regional protection on human right with the particular focus on the region of Europe and European Convention on Human rights. Third, students become acquainted with the rights of various groups. The course encompasses the analysis of the rights of minorities, women, children, refugees and internally displaced persons. Finally, the course challenges students to think as human rights advocates and encourages diversity of opinion. In order promote active learning and expressing personal opinion, a series of individual and group exercises are used. Reading list: 1.
