Time: Approx. 15 minutes<br />

PURPOSE: This can be used as an ice-breaker/warm-up activity to introduce cirtical<br />

thinking and problem-solving skills as well as new vocabulary. Also recommended for<br />

motivating conversation.<br />

FOCUS: Critical thinking and problem solving.<br />

OBJECTIVE: Learners are to figure out two words which fit the definition and number<br />

of syllables required. Example: Ink-Pink requires words with 1 syllable each; <strong>Inky</strong>-<br />

<strong>Pinky</strong> requires words with 2 syllables each, etc.<br />

Materials Needed: Set of “<strong>Inky</strong>-<strong>Pinky</strong>” Sheets for each pair or group. (Samples<br />

attached).<br />

Procedures:<br />

1. Divide learners into pairs or groups.<br />

2. Give each pair/group a sheet containing “<strong>Inky</strong> <strong>Pinky</strong> definitions.<br />

3. Groups discuss their solutions.<br />

What do you get when you dip your little finger into a bottle of writing fluid? An inky<br />

pinky.<br />

In <strong>Inky</strong> <strong>Pinky</strong>, the first player offers a concise, clear definition and the second player<br />

must translate that definition into two words that rhyme. The first player must also<br />

indicate the number of syllables in each word by saying “Ink Pink” for one-syllable<br />

words, “<strong>Inky</strong> <strong>Pinky</strong>” for two-syllable words, and so on.<br />

Examples:<br />

Definition: an uncontrollable youngster. Ink Pink<br />

Answer: a wild child.<br />

Definition: a dumb little boy with a bow and arrow. <strong>Inky</strong> <strong>Pinky</strong>.<br />

Answer: a stupid cupid.<br />

Definition: a yearly handbook. Inkity Pinkity<br />

Answer: an annual manual<br />

Now translate the following lists of definitions into rhyming pairs, using the headings as<br />

clues to the number of syllables in each word.<br />
