DONAUSCHWABEN TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
Donauschwaben Tournament Director Mike Talan with Green White President
Hans Metzinger and Vice President Jon Duddles
AT Green White S.C., and for many Danube
Swabian clubs around the country, the month of
May means it is time for that storied, traveling
fixture known as the U.S. National
Donauschwaben Tournament. In years past,
this national fixture has attracted clubs from
Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan,
Pennsylvania, New York, California and Canada.
This year, the 34th edition of the tournament
is hosted by SDC Concordia in Cleveland,
Ohio. This competition is also one that Green
White S.C. has won more than any other club,
hoisting the trophy eight (8) times in total and at
least once in each decade since the tournament
was established. Indeed, in 1975 in Akron,
Ohio, legendary Green White player and coach
Stefan Zimmer led a strong team to the inaugural
tournament title, going undefeated and unscored
upon. There was no final that year due
to heavy rain but Green White was awarded the
crown nonetheless. Participating in that inaugural
tournament were current club elders Rudi
and Hansi Mayer, Hardy Ritter, Nick Willer,
Joe Laxgang, Nick Wirs, Helmut Schuster,
Chaim Kornsteiyn, Hans Marx, Peter Berger,
Wolfgang Ritter, Herman Wittje, Kon-
2008
rad Kirschner and Georg Polaretzki.
Nearly 10 years passed before Coach
Zimmer was able to recapture the title for
Green White in 1984 and 1986 with a new
crop of players such as Tony Szmeil, Mike
Andres, Mark Laxgang, Frank Speth, Mike
Blass, Rudi Mayer, Frank Schmalz, Hans
Metzinger, Jr., Hardy Ritter, Brad Kovin,
Robert Meschbach, Richard Meschbach,
Roberto Arciniega, Edwin Arciniega, and
Danny Vlaovic. Of course, nothing matched
the success of the Green White teams from
the later half of the 90’s when the club truly
dominated the tournament, winning it all in
1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999. Those teams featured
the likes of Jamie Limna, Kurt Melcher,
Peter Kaempfer, Tom Czop, Enrique
Barrera, Brandon Hardy, Jason Gould,
Dave Johnson, Michael Kennedy, Brian
Bischoff and Dave Siers. Green White last
celebrated the tournament title in 2003 when
Jake Truty scored the lone goal to beat Detroit’s
Carpathia Kickers in the finals. Of
course, the tournament is not all about wins
and losses. There is a certain social element
that is always a big part of the tournament’s
lure. This year, while the roster remains in
draft, it is expected that Danny Caruso,
Brendan Connor, Matt Connor, Sean Connor,
Tom Czop, Anthony Derose, Colum
Donahue, Chris Doran, Brandon Hardy,
Jamie Limna, A.J. Nawrocki, Andy Pancio,
Peter Rusin, Eric Spiess, Jake Truty and
others will represent Green White S.C. in the
Men’s Open Division. Also expected to be
traveling with the club to compete in the Over
35 Division are Keith Andersen, Greg Boltz,
Jim Dionne, John Dunkas, Brett Lasher,
Pat Nash, Chris Ryan, Todd Schneider,
Gabby Sepiashvili, Grant Smale, Derrick
Wilkinson and Chris Wixson.
FIRST TEAM - APRIL RECAP April 2008 was a cruel month for
all of Chicagoland soccer. Old Man Winter hung around a little
longer than anyone wanted and early April showers did nothing to
subside the growing soccer fever. As a result of the poor weather and
unplayable field conditions, the first three games of the spring season
(against Eagles, Vikings and Polonia) had to be postponed.
Ultimately, the skies cleared and pitch drained allowing
1-0
Green White to take the field on April 27, 2008 against
Connection in Round Lake Park, Illinois. Starting for the men in
green were Danny Caruso, Brendan Connor, Matt Connor, Sean
Connor, Anthony Derose, Colum Donahue, Chris Doran, Bunnyray
Larmond, Andy Pancio, Peter Rusin and Eric Spies.
Missed opportunities was the story of the game against a mixed
Ukrainian and Hispanic team. Green White carved out the first real
opportunity of the match as substitute Asher Mendelsohn, making his
Green White First Team debut, found Chris Doran at the near post.
Chris’ close range effort was nicely saved by the keeper. But it was
Connection that opened the scoring midway through the first half on a
cross in from the left that saw the target forward sell his run near post
and then drift to the back as the service found him wide open to nod
the ball home. Seconds after the restart, Asher Mendelsohn was at
work again as he found Eric Spiess from the left, but Eric’s header
went agonizingly wide. Just before the end of the first half, Green
White came close again as Matt Connor pushed a restart to Sean
Connor on the right side. Sean sent a low, hard cross into Chris
Doran who settled and turned on the ball, striking it high just over the
bar.
Following the intermission, Green White has several more opportunities,
not the least of which was the increasingly familiar combination
of Asher Mendelsohn to Chris Doran. Chris elevated to meet the
cross, but his effort again went wide right. Late in the game, Danny
Caruso parried a shot over the bar to keep hope alive. But despite the
Chris Doran rises to meet a cross from Asher Mendelsohn in a 1-0 loss against Connection on April 27, 2008.
increasing pressure, Green White could not find the equalizer, and had to
accept a frustrating 1-0 defeat. Coach Limna commented afterwards, “It
was a disappointing start to the season made more so by the fact that this
was a team we could have and should have beaten. We had the better
possession and chances but conceded a goal due to some poor defending
RESERVE TEAM - APRIL RECAP Like the First Team, the start of
the Reserve Team’s spring season was compromised by uncooperative
weather. So too were their games against Eagles, Vikings and Polonia
postponed.
The inaugural match under the guidance of new Reserve
5-3
Team player/coach Adam Gee had to wait until April 27,
2008 against Connection. Starting for the reserves were Jon Duddles,
Chris Salatino, Jaime Limna, Jake Truty, Adam Gee, Mitch
Lechowski, Alex Jurado, Mike Sulik, Neaman Lewis, Stuart Greer
and Ben Pavlovic.
In contrast to the First Team match, the reserve match saw a barrage of
goals. Inside of 20 minutes, however, Green White found themselves
Alex Jurado serves into the box in the Reserve Match against Connection on April 27, 2008.
down 2-0, which included an unlikely combination of Mitch Lechowski, the
post and Jon Duddles for the opposition’s second goal on the day. Ultimately
though, the boys in green got on the board as Tom Czop took a throw
in from Mike Sulik and flicked it over his head to stun the frozen keeper.
That was the lone tally from Green White in the first half, but it was not the
only highlight, as Jon Duddles stood strong in goal to turn away a dubiously
awarded spot kick and preserve the 2-1 score line. Unfortunately, it did not
hold as Green White headed to the intermission down 4-1.
Not long into the second half Green White got back on track. A.J. Nawrocki
lifted a ball into the box that found Mitch Lechowski open at the far post.
Mitch left no room for doubt as he snapped the header into the back of the
net. Green White closed out the scoring as Neaman Lewis pounced upon a
spilled free kick taken low and hard by Alex Jurado. Unfortunately, it was
not enough as the Reserves fell 5-3. Upon reflection, Coach Gee commented,
“The first game of the season proved a tough test. The game was a
true cliché of a game of two halves, with the first not being our best. In the
second half we gave a better performance and a great goal from Mitch leveled
his day. All in all, next week will be a better performance as we expect a full
turn out for practice on Thursday.”
rescheduled to a later date.
The Over 30 Team finally took to the field on April 26, 2008
0-2 against Vikings at the Schwaben Center in Buffalo Grove,
Illinois. The line-up had to be shuffled as many of the regular team members
were out of town. The game also marked the Over 30 Team debut of the
aged Mitch Lechowski, Rob Czop and Herb Sherry.
The first half of the game was played to a scoreless draw, but there were
plenty of opportunities for both sides. John “JP” Parsinen neatly rounded
several defenders to go in on goal, but the keeper did well to thwart his low
struck shot. Mitch Lechowski also saw a shot drift just wide of the left post.
Of course, other opportunities were wasted as Todd Schneider, subbing in
from the Over 40s for the depleted squad, saw his open effort from 25 yards
hit the upper half of the backstop netting. Not to be out done, Greg
(hereinafter known as “House”) Boltz incredibly managed to clear the backstop,
sending a shot into the surrounding community.
In the second half, however, Green White sharpened their focus and the
break through came at about the 60 minute mark of the match. Chris Wixon
received the ball from the defense near midfield on the left side and found JP
tracking back in the middle. JP turned the ball and distributed to House as
he raced into the right corner. As the defense crowded into the box for the
expected cross, House deftly turned inside his defender and played the ball
back into space for a streaking Rob Czop, who hit the ball first time from 18
yards out with a dipping shot that found the left side netting. For his effort,
Rob was drilled into the ground just as he hit the game winner. Indeed, from
thereon out things got chippy as the Vikings felt the game slipping away.
Green White sealed the victory 15 minutes later on a similar goal. This time,
Chris Wixon found Derrick Wilkinson in the right corner. Derrick cut the
OVER 40 TEAM - APRIL RECAP Like all the other teams in the club,
the hard winter and April showers combined to force the cancellation of the
Over 40 Team’s first game of the spring season against Real F.C. on April
19, 2008.
The Over 40 Team ultimately kicked off the spring season on
0-0
April 26, 2008 against United Serbs at the home field in Majewski
Park, Illinois.
Considering it was the first match of the spring season, and that the over 40s
typically “train” less than the younger squads over the winter, the match
against the United Serbs was well played. During the off season, the team
did some recruiting to round out the squad and those additions proved vital
against a tough Serbian team ranked near the top of the league. The defense
was stellar, led by a superb performance from Kevin Katz in the net. Although
the match ended in a goalless draw, Green White definitely dominated
play at both ends of the field on a very windy day. Strong performances
were turned in by always dependable veterans Mike Grosse, Nick
Paul, George Lymperis and Russell Rosenberg. Of note, co-manager
Russell Rosenberg was recently selected to the Maccabi USA National
Grand Masters Team, set to compete in an international tournament next
month in Canada. Newbies Mark Stein (a former Maccabi USA National
Master Team member himself) and Pat Nash worked well together up front,
adding a much needed jolt to the offense. But in the end, the stalemate could
not be unlocked. With a little more game fitness and training as a team, the
Over 40s should continue to play some great soccer this spring. As a post
script to the game, George Lymperis was notably whistled for not one, but
two foul throws. It was generally agreed afterwards that no one had ever
seen such a folly outside a U9 game.
YOUTH TEAM SPOTLIGHT - A PERFECT SEASON The U12
Green White Power accomplished something this year that neither the
capped off their perfect campaign with a convincing 8-3 win over Evanston
of time and space.” Echoing the sentiments of her
teammates, Kelsey Webb commented, “I really liked
the fast pace of the indoor league.” The Green White
Power’s potent offense was lead by Sarah LaCost,
Emily Novak and Samantha Krawczyk. The midfield
was well balanced with Katie Neville, Alexandra
Wilson and Kelsey Webb. The defensive performances
of Jenna Grivas, Jennifer Novak and
Kelly Regan were outstanding in supporting the
team’s offensive strategy the entire season. Goal
keeper Elaine Tomko provided a steady hand
throughout, maintaining an impressively low 2 goals
per game average. Reflecting on the season, Coach
Grivas said, "I am extremely proud of all the
girls. They all played well, but more importantly,
they had fun every game." Congratulations girls on a
perfect season.
from Christy D’Anza and Maggie Pancini and
fearless goaltending by Shannon Regan. Offensive
pressure was supplied by Maggie Pancini, Mayra
Ortiz and Izzy Winkler. The crossbar is undoubtedly
still rattling from Mayra Ortiz’s strong 25 yard
blast. Unfortunately, the girls ran out of gas in the
second half and succumbed to tired legs.
• April 27, 2008 v. Eclipse Select East. 2-3 Loss.
Mayra Ortiz scored two goals, both from distance;
one on a well placed penalty kick with some “bend”
on it. Danielle Papa, Chrissie Schmadebeck,
Cassie Andracki and Jana Lopuszanski also applied
pressure on the opposition’s goal. Shannon
Regan was strong in net with considerable help from
Meghan Ricketts, a guest player from the U10
Green White Heat. The defense was anchored by
Ally Schuldt, Robin Grooms, Jenna Leane and
Shannon Regan. B Campanile was on the injured
reserve all weekend, but the team looks forward to
her return in the near future.
• April 20, 2008 v. Northstars S.C. 1-1 Tie. The
Green White Wildcats opened the season with a
hard fought draw against Northstars S.C. Kimberly
Welk scored the tying goal 10 minutes into
the second period on a direct free kick from 25
yards out. The Wildcat defense, that included Michelle
Welk, Michaela Slosar, Katie Krebs, Elise
Dietrich, and Allison Brask, shut down the Northstars
in the second half rarely, allowing the ball to
enter into the Green White side of the field.
The Green White Wildcats notched their first
the ball into the back of the net. In the second half,
