FIRST TEAM - APRIL RECAP April 2008 was a cruel month for
all of Chicagoland soccer. Old Man Winter hung around a little
longer than anyone wanted and early April showers did nothing to
subside the growing soccer fever. As a result of the poor weather and
unplayable field conditions, the first three games of the spring season
(against Eagles, Vikings and Polonia) had to be postponed.
Ultimately, the skies cleared and pitch drained allowing
1-0
Green White to take the field on April 27, 2008 against
Connection in Round Lake Park, Illinois. Starting for the men in
green were Danny Caruso, Brendan Connor, Matt Connor, Sean
Connor, Anthony Derose, Colum Donahue, Chris Doran, Bunnyray
Larmond, Andy Pancio, Peter Rusin and Eric Spies.
Missed opportunities was the story of the game against a mixed
Ukrainian and Hispanic team. Green White carved out the first real
opportunity of the match as substitute Asher Mendelsohn, making his
Green White First Team debut, found Chris Doran at the near post.
Chris’ close range effort was nicely saved by the keeper. But it was
Connection that opened the scoring midway through the first half on a
cross in from the left that saw the target forward sell his run near post
and then drift to the back as the service found him wide open to nod
the ball home. Seconds after the restart, Asher Mendelsohn was at
work again as he found Eric Spiess from the left, but Eric’s header
went agonizingly wide. Just before the end of the first half, Green
White came close again as Matt Connor pushed a restart to Sean
Connor on the right side. Sean sent a low, hard cross into Chris
Doran who settled and turned on the ball, striking it high just over the
bar.
Following the intermission, Green White has several more opportunities,
not the least of which was the increasingly familiar combination
of Asher Mendelsohn to Chris Doran. Chris elevated to meet the
cross, but his effort again went wide right. Late in the game, Danny
Caruso parried a shot over the bar to keep hope alive. But despite the
