and Associates
Scores of smaller companies benefit when a major undertaking such
as the Queensland Curtis LNG Project (QCLNG) is developed.
QGC has awarded hundreds of contracts for services and equipment
and more than 1500 businesses have registered their interest in being
involved in QCLNG.
One of those contractors is the Gladstone-based surveying business
Fredriksen Maclean and Associates.
Fredriksen Maclean started working for QGC in 2010 on early shorebased
works around the Port of Gladstone. QGC is constructing a
liquefied natural gas plant on Curtis Island, off the coast of the central
Queensland city.
“We were on a tight timetable,” says Alan Maclean, who established
the company with Dave Fredriksen in 1988.
“But we quickly developed a good working relationship with QGC
engineers and the Gladstone Ports Corporation staff.
Quick facts
• The company employs 13 full
time staff in Gladstone, two in
Biloela and one in Theodore
• The project equates to around
10% of annual turnover for the
business
• QGC believes the development
of infrastructure and business
brings significant employment
and training opportunities to
regional areas
• QGC is committed to working
closely with all stakeholders to
achieve beneficial results for
the local communities
About QGC
QGC is a leading Australian coal seam
gas explorer and producer focused on
developing world-class reserves for
domestic and international supply.
More than 4000 staff and contractors
work for us in central and southern
Queensland.
Our priority development is QCLNG
– one of Australia’s biggest capital
infrastructure projects and the world’s
first liquefied natural gas project
based on gas from coal seams.
“We were astounded by the quick design decisions being made and it
was good that our staff were able to meet the challenge.”
Partnerships such as that between QGC and Fredriksen Maclean are
vital for the growth of regional areas. The work for QGC represents
about 10 per cent of the surveyor’s annual turnover.
“The QGC contract provided a valuable and consistent workflow as our
firm recovered from the downturn,” Mr Maclean says.
Fredriksen Maclean is the biggest surveyor in Gladstone, where it
employs nine full-time surveyors among a staff of 14.
“As a result of our association our staff have gained new skills,
particularly in the machine guidance area. We have been able to
purchase the latest new equipment as we strive for greater efficiency
and accuracy.
“As a result our business is expanding and we’re ready for new
challenges, which is important as Gladstone’s regional importance
grows.”
By 2014 QGC’s parent company, BG Group, will have invested US$15
billion in constructing the QCLNG Project.
QGC expects that about half of the project’s total capital outlay until
that date will be spent with Queensland and Australian firms and for
about 80 per cent of operating expenditure over the next 20 years to be
spent locally.
Many are small family businesses that are growing and prospering.
QCLNG involves significantly
expanding QGC’s operations in
the Surat Basin and transporting
the gas via a 540km underground
pipeline network to Curtis Island, off
Gladstone, where it will be cooled to a
liquid for transport by ship.
QGC also supplies about 20 per cent
of Queensland’s gas demand through
our existing domestic gas business.
