In May 2012, QGC Pty Limited, developer of the Queensland Curtis
LNG Project, awarded a construction contract to Murphy Pipe and
Civil Constructions Pty Ltd to install gas and water gathering pipelines
throughout QGC’s gas fields in the Surat Basin.
The initial phase of the contract is worth about A$250 million.
Brisbane-based Murphy Pipe and Civil will install high-density
polyethylene pipe to gather and transport gas and water from wells to
QGC’s processing facilities.
The Murphy Pipe and Civil contract, which runs for about two years,
complements other work the company is doing for QGC through
innovative ‘spider plough’ machinery (shown below) and fast-fusion
welding technology.
In 2011, QGC awarded a A$120 million contract to Iplex Pipelines to
supply the high-density polyethylene pipe for the gas fields through a
new manufacturing plant at Toowoomba.
The plant is scheduled to reach full production by September 2012.

Murphy Pipe and Civil has indicated that a further 250 people will
be employed to fulfil the contract and that it will draw heavily on
its network of Western Downs’ suppliers and service providers.
Company Managing Director Jim Campbell says Murphy Pipe and
Civil has injected more than A$8 million into the Western Downs
economy over the past 12 months.
“This commitment will continue and increase thanks to this new
contract,” Mr Campbell said.
Mr Campbell believes the company’s focus on bringing innovative
pipeline solutions to the industry has been key to its success.
“Traditionally, the pipeline industry was all about getting the
client’s pipelines into the ground as quickly as possible, but those
days are gone now,” he said.
“Today, the construction industry is much more accountable
and therefore is looking for total pipeline packages that deliver
productivity and quality, without compromising the safety of
people, the environment and local communities.
“Our company always looks for continuous improvement in our
operations and we believe the spider plough and fast-fusion
welding technology we have introduced heralds a very positive new
chapter in the history of the pipeline industry,” Mr Campbell said.
QCLNG involves significantly
expanding QGC’s operations in
the Surat Basin and transporting
the gas via a 540km underground
pipeline network to Curtis Island, off
Gladstone, where it will be cooled to a
liquid for transport by ship.
QGC also supplies about 20 per cent
of Queensland’s gas demand through
our existing domestic gas business.
