Mentoring Pilot
Dr. Michael Gaffley is shown sharing
important findings and recommendations
pursuant to the Title V-B Mentoring Pilot
Initiative during the Fall 2012 Fischler School
Faculty Retreat. Dr. Gaffley also reported
on a review of related literature on
mentoring including: Students need a
perception that they are connected and
that someone cares and is available to
help; It is not what is done that impacts
student success but rather how it is done;
Students do better in groups. Those lacking
even one study buddy have higher college
dropout rates; Students successful in high
school are generally successful in college.
Student mentees participating in the Online
mentoring pilot using the Blackboard
platform reported issues related academic
writing, academic counselors, time
management, APA style, the Concept Paper,
sense of isolation, social stressors and
finances.
of the cloud-based
Prezi software program, its
options and benefits, as
well as Power Tips”
created by the presenters
based upon their
On November 3 rd 2012 during a visit to
the Center for Distributed Learning at the
University of Central Florida, Ms. Steiner
and Ms. Slapak-Barski worked with Amy
Sugar, Instructional Designer and Dr.
Thomas Cavanagh, Vice President for
Distributed Learning, to gain knowledge
about best practices that are applicable
to the Fischler School of Education’s
Faculty Support Center—the technology
infusion lab for faculty, which was
created and retrofitted via Title V-B
funds.
In particular, they explored professional
development programs to help faculty
prepare to teach online and to design
and structure online courses and
programs with a level of comfort in the
use of media enrichment tools such as
instructional technology software,
graphics, interactive exercises, games
and simulations, animations and videos,
on-going research on teaching
effectiveness, and the development of
relevant policies ad guidelines for
effective online teaching.
Enrichment Activities with
FPAC During the August 30,
2012 meeting of the Fischler
Title V-B Project Advisory
Committee (FPAC). Three
recipients of the Title V-B
Professional Engagement
Award (HEPEG) shared their
leadership development
activities that were funded
through this grant award.
Ernesto De la Hoz shared his
experiences at the 38th
Annual Conference –
Golden Connection of the
National Council for
Marketing and Public
Relations in Community
Colleges (NMPR), held in
San Francisco, March 11-
14, 2012.
Ernesto commented that the lessons
learned from the conference sessions
were directly relevant to his role at
Miami Dade College in “directing the
marketing, promotion, enrollment, and
retention of students in a Title V Grant.”
Corey Campbell and Dalila Rodriguez
talked about their experiences at the
21st Annual Leadership Academy
International Conference: Leading to
a Better Future, sponsored by the
Chair Academy, held March 26-29,
2012, in Atlanta Georgia. Corey
Campbell reported that “The main
improvement understood how many
community colleges there are
globally and the difference in
institutional structures. Also, talking
and networking with prominent
leaders in the Higher Education field
was a valuable experience to help
guide me in my career. Ethics,
integrity and honesty were themes
that were reiterated throughout the
conference. Attending this conference
was a great development experience,
which will greatly benefit me for future
career endeavors. Listening to various
experiences and meeting such
influential people was very
enlightening.”
Excelencia in Education: Washington D.C.
(Pictured Top Left: Sarita Brown, President
of Excelencia and Dr. Ron Kern)
Abraham S. Fischler School of Education’s Doctoral
Intervention Workshop Model was nominated at
Excelencia as an initiative that works for Hispanic
Students.
American Society for Higher Education (ASHE)
Associate Dean, Ron Kern
represented the Fischler
School at the Excelencia in
Education convocation at the
Capitol Building in Washington,
D.C., on October 2nd.
Abraham S. Fischler’s Title V-B
Dissertation Intervention
Workshops were among the
approximately 125 programs
recognized nationally, and
was considered for the 2012
"Examples of Excelencia"
award. The winning graduate
program was the MBA
Program at The University of
Texas at El Paso. Dr. Kern said,
"It was an honor just to be
invited as one of the
outstanding graduate
programs in America for
Hispanic graduate students. It
demonstrates the quality and
impact that the Title V-B
program is having on
increasing the Fischler School's
doctoral graduation rate."
The 2012 annual “Freedom to Learn” meeting of the Association for the Study of
Higher Education was held November 14-17 in Las Vegas. As Fischler’s doctoral
concentration in Higher Education Leadership is part of Fischler’s Title V-B grant,
HPEG grantee Claudia Bonilla attended along with Dr. Robert Hill, Dr. Isabel
Medina, member of the Title V-B Project Advisory Committee, and Dr. Ron Kern.
Research and scholarly paper presentations were made throughout the conference
by graduate students and higher education professors and administrators.
Roundtable and workshops were held that addressed various areas of interest that
included early career faculty teaching public policy, international higher education,
and ethnic participation.
Pictured above: Dr. Robert Hill
This was Dr. Robert Hill’s 4th Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) conference. This
37th annual meeting was indeed the largest with about 1,500 people (i.e., Higher ED professors,
policy makers/researchers, and graduate students) in attendance. He especially enjoyed the two
"keynote" sessions. Mike Rose, Professor of Education in the Social Research Methodology division
at the University of California, Los Angeles, presented eloquently on Friday on "The Power of a
Second Chance: A View from One Community College." On Saturday morning, Robert P. Moses,
iconic civil rights leader and the founder & president of the Algebra Project spoke on "Math and the
Freedom to Learn, “Quantitative and Language Literacy as a Feature of Constitutional Personhood"
- a moving and inspiring presentation that had nothing to do with the session's title.
“I took pleasure in meeting up with old friends and in attending various research sessions with of our
own doctoral students, Isabel Medina, and by staying over Saturday night -- I also got to the go to
the world famous, Hoover Dam - a marvelous attraction outside Las Vegas that I never got to see
before.”
