From the Pastor’s Desk Welcome Father Christopher Costigan This past Wednesday we welcomed our new Associate Pastor, Father Christopher Costigan, to Saint Mary’s. Ordained in St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre by Bishop Murphy with Father Sikorski in 2008, Father Chris has spent the past five years at St. Bernard’s in Levittown. We pray that God may bless his ministry among us in St. Mary’s. This Sunday there will be a “Meet and Greet” reception for Fr. Chris in the Marian Room following the 9:00 and 10:30 AM Masses. Pat McDonough – Our Youth Minister On June 12th, Pat McDonough told me that she was resigning her position here in St. Mary’s, effective June 30th, to take a position with the Jesuit Collaborative Ministry. We wish her well in her new ministry. Thanks! I want to thank all who helped to make Father Sikorski’s “good bye” Mass and party such a wonderful time. I thank the choir and all who attended the Mass. It was a real celebration of faith. I thank the members of the Rosary Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Squires for their efforts in putting together the reception in the Marian Room. Fortnight For Freedom Continues Last year, the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty” outlining the bishop’s concerns over threats to religious freedom both at home and aboard. The Bishops called for a “Fortnight for Freedom,” a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21st to July 4th. In the Diocese of Rockville Centre, the “Fortnight for Freedom” will conclude with Mass on July 4th at 12:10 PM at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre. The following are some suggestions on how we can participate in the “Fortnight for Freedom:” Prayer – Whether you choose to pray the Rosary or simply pray the Prayer for Religious Freedom (page 6), make a diligent effort o commit to daily prayer during these days. Attend Daily Mass – Offer a Mass during the week for religious liberty. If you are unable to make Mass every day, commit to once or twice a week during these days. Education – Go online to www.drvc.org and www.usccb.org for information on the issue of religious freedom. Share what you read and discover with family and friends.
