From the Pastor’s Desk
Welcome Father Christopher Costigan
This past Wednesday we welcomed our new Associate
Pastor, Father Christopher Costigan, to Saint Mary’s.
Ordained in St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre by
Bishop Murphy with Father Sikorski in 2008, Father
Chris has spent the past five years at St. Bernard’s in
Levittown. We pray that God may bless his ministry
among us in St. Mary’s.
This Sunday there will be a “Meet and Greet” reception
for Fr. Chris in the Marian Room following the 9:00 and
10:30 AM Masses.
Pat McDonough – Our Youth Minister
On June 12th, Pat McDonough told me that she was
resigning her position here in St. Mary’s, effective June
30th, to take a position with the Jesuit Collaborative
Ministry. We wish her well in her new ministry.
Thanks!
I want to thank all who helped to make Father Sikorski’s
“good bye” Mass and party such a wonderful time. I
thank the choir and all who attended the Mass. It was
a real celebration of faith. I thank the members of the
Rosary Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Squires
for their efforts in putting together the reception in the
Marian Room.
Fortnight For Freedom Continues
Last year, the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of
the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
issued “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty” outlining the
bishop’s concerns over threats to religious freedom both at
home and aboard. The Bishops called for a “Fortnight for
Freedom,” a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in
support of religious freedom, from June 21st to July 4th. In
the Diocese of Rockville Centre, the “Fortnight for Freedom”
will conclude with Mass on July 4th at 12:10 PM at St. Agnes
Cathedral in Rockville Centre.
The following are some suggestions on how we can participate
in the “Fortnight for Freedom:”
Prayer – Whether you choose to pray the Rosary or simply
pray the Prayer for Religious Freedom (page 6), make a
diligent effort o commit to daily prayer during these days.
Attend Daily Mass – Offer a Mass during the week for
religious liberty. If you are unable to make Mass every day,
commit to once or twice a week during these days.
Education – Go online to www.drvc.org and www.usccb.org
for information on the issue of religious freedom. Share what
you read and discover with family and friends. Religious
freedom is an American issue, not just a Catholic issue.
God Bless!
Stewards of God’s Gifts
In today’s second reading, St. Paul provides a wonderful one-sentence summary of Christian stewardship: ”Out
of love, place yourselves at one another’s service.”
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who choose small acts of giving, be it driving
an elderly neighbor to the doctor, helping out at the church’s festival or giving a hug to someone, just
because!
The collection for Sunday, June 23, 2013 amounted to $27,134.00
The collection for June 24, 2012 amounted to $25,478.00
before you make arrangements for the reception, please
make an appointment with one of the priests to begin the
Catholics for Freedom of Religion
America’s 1 st Freedom: Religious Liberty
America’s religious freedom was assured to all generations by the careful crafting of the 1 st amendment
of the Bill of Rights. The robust freedom of religion envisioned by the founders has allowed our country
to flourish without the religious strife seen elsewhere in the world. Americans were to be forever free
to follow their conscience in the service of their God and maintain a morality that would sustain our
constitutional freedoms. One of our Founding Fathers, John Adams, said, “Our Constitution was made
only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
As stated by the USCCB: “That is our American heritage, our most cherished freedom. It is the first
freedom because if we are not free in our conscience and our practice of religion, all other freedoms are
fragile. If citizens are not free in their own consciences, how can they be free in relation to others, or to
the state? If our obligations and duties to God are impeded, or even worse, contradicted by the
government, then we can no longer claim to be a land of the free, and a beacon of hope for the world.”
You are invited to come together in prayer with fellow Long Island Catholics who understand the peril of
this time. The coming months will see the vise that is the HHS mandate tightening around our Catholic
institutions…a vise that, left unchecked, will crush the life and liberty out of Catholic practices and
institutions in a way unimagined by us all.
We must pray together that we might stand together in strength and courage with our faith in God and
our love of America’s freedoms guiding the actions we must take. Thomas Jefferson said, “The God who
gave us life gave us liberty”. These rights of life and liberty are not ours to lose. They were gifted to us by
God and conveyed to us by our forefathers. We are this day charged as rightful stewards to defend
these rights for future generations.
Come together for the closing mass of the Fortnight For Freedom to be celebrated by Bishop Robert
Brennan at the Cathedral of St Agnes, Rockville Centre, NY, on July 4 th at 12:10 PM.
“While Americans presume that the Constitution guarantees their rights, in practice our rights
survive or disappear based on how firmly we defend them”.
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, Philadelphia

Annual Mission Appeal
Please join us in welcoming Fr. Willy Ollevier, CICM, a Missionhurst-CICM (the congregation of
the Immaculate Heart of Mary) missionary who will be visiting St. Mary’s next weekend, July 6th
and 7th, to present a mission appeal. Fr. Willy is from the foreign mission of Taiwan and will be
sharing his life and dedication to the people he serves with us.
Missionhurst-CICM was originally founded in 1862 for the conversion of China. Today,
Missionhurst-CICM serves in some of the most remote places of Mongolia, Indonesia, Africa,
Asia, and Latin America. Unlike some relief organizations that come only when there is a newsmaking
crisis, Missionhurst-CICM missionaries come prepared to stay, living among the people, sharing in their
privations, and participating in the day-to-day effort needed to achieve life-long spiritual and material changes. In
response to the people’s most urgent need, Missionhurst-CICM missionaries may start a new farming project, build a
new chapel or school, or lay clean water supply lines.
Fr. Willy will be preaching at all the Masses and a second collection will be taken with the proceeds going to
Missionhurst-CICM. Please be generous.
Lighthouse Catholic Media CD of the Week: Unlocking the Book of Revelation
Dr. Michael Barber, host for Reasons for Faith Live on EWTN, is Professor of Theology and
Scripture at John Paul the Great Catholic University. In this exciting presentation, he reveals
the deep treasures hidden in the Apocalypse, demonstrating the practical implications for
living in today’s modern world. When is Jesus coming? Listen and discover the surprising
truth!
Parishioner Comments:
“It literally blew me away! This CD on the Book of Revelation is so rich in detail and Old Testament understanding!”
“Excellent! I think all Christians need to hear and study this message. It should be widely distributed!”
“The Book of Revelation is notoriously opaque and diffi cult to understand, but Mr. Barber makes it very clear, and his speaking
style is engaging. What I liked most is that, like Dr. Scott Hahn, his mentor, he ties it into the Catholic liturgy.”
This CD and others are available in the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk located in the south vestibule of the Church.
