Father Raphael Soadwah
Holy Father, who, by no merit of my own,
chose me for communion
with the eternal priesthood of your Christ
and for the ministry of your Church,

and a faithful steward of your mysteries.

In the name of all in Saint Mary’s, I congratulate Father
Raphael on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of his
ordination to the priesthood which he celebrated this past
Tuesday, July 16th.
Today, Father will celebrate the 12:00 Noon Mass to give
thanks to God for his twenty-five years of priesthood.
Following Mass, there is a reception and light lunch in the
Marian Room.
Pray and Encourage Vocations to the Priesthood
As we celebrate Father Raphael’s Silver Jubilee of his
ordination to the priesthood, we are reminded of the
importance for all Catholics to pray for and to encourage
young men to give serious consideration to the possibility
that God is calling them to serve His people as a priest.
The need is real. This year, the Diocese of Rockville
Centre ordained only two priests - two newly ordained
to replace ten priests who retired and several active priests
who died during the past year. During this June’s priest
transfers several parishes did not receive replacements for
priests who were transferred. For example, Fr. Sikorski is
replacing two priests at St. Matthew’s in Dix Hills.
If you know someone who you think has the potential
of being a good priest let him know that. Sometimes we
need the encouragement of another to start us moving in a
direction that deep in our hearts we know we should go.
In your prayers, I ask you to remember several parishioners
who are giving serious consideration to the call of the
priesthood.

Stewards of God’s Gifts
Today’s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality
required, was rewarded with his heart’s desire—a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of
hospitality but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver?
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who feed the hungry through our Office of Parish
Social Ministry or such efforts as St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry or Long Island Cares Harry Chapin
Food Bank etc.

We Care for Our Parish Community
Baptism
We usually celebrate Baptism at 2:00 PM on the Second
and Fourth Sundays of the month. Please call to see
if a date is available and to arrange for a pre-baptismal
interview. Parents are required to attend a baptism
preparation session held once every month. Those chosen
as sponsors for Baptism should lead lives in harmony with
the Catholic faith and the role of Godparent.
Marriage
At least six months before you plan to be married and
before you make arrangements for the reception, please
make an appointment with one of the priests to begin the
necessary preparations.
Children’s Education
Saint Mary’s Elementary School offers excellent education
in the spirit of the Gospel from grades N, Pre-K to Eighth
grade. For information call 627-0184.
Empowering Character, Innovation and Leadership in
our students, Saint Mary’s High School is a dynamic,
contemporary, Catholic value-centered school, combining
a commitment to academic excellence and educational
innovation, with a passion for learning, and an emphasis
on moral character development through the pursuit of
truth and discovered in faith and reason. For information

The Faith Formation Program provides excellent formation
in the Catholic Faith for children in public or private
schools. Preparation for First Holy Communion and
Confirmation requires two years. All classes are held at
St. Mary’s. Grades 1 through 5 meet on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 PM. Families choose which
day. Grades 6, 7 and 8 meet on Mondays from 7:30 to

Parish Social Ministry
We care for our sisters and brothers through our Parish
Social Ministry and Food Pantry. For information call

Youth Ministry
We reach out to our teens though our Youth Ministry

We welcome new members to the Catholic Church and to
Saint Mary’s Parish. If you are new in the area or interested
in learning more about the Catholic faith, please call the
Parish Office.
Opportunities For Prayer
The Church is open Monday to Friday until 8:45 PM and
on Saturday and Sunday until the end of the 5:00 PM Mass
so that we may have the opportunity for quiet prayer before
the Blessed Sacrament. The Miraculous Medal Novena is
said each Monday following the 9:00 AM Mass. Monday
to Friday the Rosary is said following the 9:00 AM Mass.
A Rosary Service is held every Thursday from 1:45 to 2:45
PM in the Chapel. Eucharistic Adoration is held every
Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM in the Chapel. On First
Saturdays the Scriptural Rosary is recited following the
8:00 AM Mass.

Could you imagine for a moment that because of an illness or loss of job you were having
trouble feeding or sheltering yourself or your family? A crisis can take many forms and
strike in an instant. The good news is that because of you, the Catholic Ministries Appeal
provides the support necessary for our Parish Outreach and Catholic Charities’ programs to
assist those in their time of greatest need.
Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised through
the Catholic Ministries Appeal…people like John. John saw information about the Catholic
Ministries Appeal at his local parish and he knew he had to turn to the Church for help, since
he had nowhere else to go. John had been gainfully employed for more than 7 years at a
leading chain when he began to feel ill. Soon his medical issues made it impossible for him
to keep working and he was forced to go out on disability.
After paying the co-pays on his medications, his rent and utilities bills, John had very little
left from his disability check to purchase food and other necessities each month. Sometimes
he would go two weeks in the month without eating a full meal. It was hard for him to
believe how hungry he was…really hungry.
It was hard for him to ask for help, but with nowhere else to turn, he did. Catholic Charities
found him a specialist who assessed his needs and directed him to appropriate resources in
his community. He went to his Parish Outreach where he received food that let him make it
through the month. John got the help he so desperately needed.
Today, he is back to work and doing well. “I am so thankful that I know there is somewhere
I can turn, where there are people that care, people I can talk to, if I am ever in such a
situation again,” shared John.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is so important for so many other critical ministries and
programs that help our children grow in the faith, form our priests and lay leaders, promote
respect for unborn life, and house our disadvantaged seniors. These critical programs allow
us to do what scripture tells us to do: Serve God by Serving Others.
Thank you most sincerely for considering this special request to
make a gift to the 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small
and every gift makes a difference in the lives of people like John and so many others.

and the Office for the Protection of Children and Young People.
