economy, our community<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Families</strong>.<br />
We are reflecting this idea of<br />
trans<strong>for</strong>mation in our annual<br />
report to you. <strong>The</strong> <strong>for</strong>mat<br />
of this year’s publication<br />
has been modified from the<br />
typical magazine layout to a<br />
unique design that allows our<br />
story to unfold as you read it.<br />
When completely unfurled,<br />
the report reveals the long<br />
list of supporters who are at<br />
the heart of our organization’s<br />
mission to end domestic<br />
violence, sexual violence<br />
<strong>and</strong> economic hardship<br />
throughout Kentuckiana.<br />
Although we have shared<br />
the disturbing statistics with<br />
you many times, they bear<br />
repeating because these<br />
numbers highlight<br />
the urgency of our<br />
mission. One in three<br />
women in the world<br />
will be beaten, raped<br />
or abused in her<br />
lifetime. <strong>The</strong>se are not<br />
just crimes happening<br />
in faraway l<strong>and</strong>s, wartorn<br />
countries or underdeveloped<br />
communities.<br />
<strong>The</strong> statistics are similar<br />
right here in our community.<br />
How do we begin to end<br />
this violence that is infecting<br />
our homes, our workplaces,<br />
our schools, <strong>and</strong> our places<br />
of worship? <strong>The</strong> prevention<br />
model.<br />
An analogy of two people<br />
fishing on the banks<br />
of a river is often<br />
used to illustrate the<br />
concept. <strong>The</strong>y see a<br />
baby floating down<br />
the river. <strong>The</strong>y are<br />
shocked. Be<strong>for</strong>e they<br />
can react a second<br />
baby appears, then<br />
another <strong>and</strong> another.<br />
<strong>The</strong> first fisherman<br />
suddenly throws down her<br />
fishing rod <strong>and</strong> jumps into<br />
the river to save the babies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> second fisherman throws<br />
down her rod, turns <strong>and</strong><br />

dedicated to ending<br />
domestic <strong>and</strong> sexual violence<br />

grew by leaps <strong>and</strong> bounds<br />
this past year. For example:<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s “Real 2 Real”<br />
curriculum <strong>for</strong> middle <strong>and</strong><br />
high school students was<br />
runner-up in a statewide<br />
search <strong>for</strong> research-based<br />
primary prevention programs.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s secondary<br />
prevention ef<strong>for</strong>ts, including<br />
services <strong>and</strong> programming<br />
to reduce the severity <strong>and</strong><br />
the continuation of domestic<br />
<strong>and</strong> sexual violence,<br />
continued with renewed<br />
dedication. Secondyear<br />
medical students<br />
at UofL received our<br />
intensive training to<br />
advance their patient<br />
screening skills <strong>and</strong><br />
our metro advocates<br />
embedded in police<br />
substations worked<br />
h<strong>and</strong>-in‐h<strong>and</strong> with<br />
detectives to provide<br />
victims with in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />
<strong>and</strong> referrals just hours after<br />
law en<strong>for</strong>cement became<br />
involved.<br />
Our tertiary prevention<br />
ef<strong>for</strong>ts, encompassing the<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>Families</strong> remains committed<br />
to a balance of prevention<br />
<strong>and</strong> caring until our crisis<br />
lines stop ringing, until our<br />
shelter is uninhabited, until<br />
domestic <strong>and</strong> sexual violence<br />
cease to present at our<br />
court rooms <strong>and</strong> hospitals.<br />

Danny has been dating the<br />
