President’s Message
The racing season is now over and some of us have
been lucky enough to send our stock to Chicago or
Prairie Meadows to see if they can help pay a few
feed bills. Wisconsin has faired well at both places,
and I would like to congratulate everyone who has
been fortunate down there to race. Some of the
horses we saw at the fairs this summer have made
it to the winner’s circle. Hope the connections of
Ivegotthehotspur, Avid Sportsman, BG’s Siren, King
Stanley, Lucky Lamont Kid, Mamtrix, and Prairie
Dream smiled pretty in the winner’s circle!
It has been a very trying year for the starting gate.
We faced many challenges over the past 6 months
with transportation woes and driver shortages.
But we were able to weather the storm and even
make a little bit of money along the way! I owe a
big THANK YOU to everyone who stepped it up in
the time of need. I apologize in advance if I have
forgotten anyone: Mike Renard, Pat Plant, Deanne
Reuter, Dean Sawyer, Kyle Falvey, Betty Prevost,
Tom Puetz, Rick & Deb Davis, Shirley Zellner, Becky

The annual meeting is right around the corner. It is
going to surely be another great one. The schedule
of events is in this issue - please take note as some
of the times have been adjusted from previous
years. We are very excited to have Chris Boring
come speak to us. Chris has been a national icon in
the harness racing industry and we are very fortunate
to hear his tales of racing in the Little Brown
Jug.
We are also in need of volunteers to work the registration
table throughout the day. Please let me
know if you would be willing to give an hour or two
anywhere from 9am – 4pm. It would be greatly appreciated!

2007 Michigan Racing Dates
There will be 315 days of harness racing in Michigan
in 2007. Thoroughbred racing received 100
days and 35 days of Mixed Breed racing which
includes Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Arabian, Appaloosa
and American Paint Horse.
The Standardbred schedule is as follows:
Northville Downs - 101 days
January 5 through April 14
October 17 through December 29
Sports Creek Raceway - 70 days
January 5 through March 11
October 5 through December 31
Hazel Park Harness Raceway - 108 days
April 20 through October 9
Jackson Harness Raceway - 36 days

Plans for Minnesota Track
Making Progress
Monday, October 30, 2006 - John Pawlak, USTA
Investors in a new harness racetrack to be built in
suburban Minneapolis-St. Paul, for which a license
was granted by the Minnesota Racing Commission
in January 2005, say their plans are still on track.
Representatives of the group appeared before
the Commission at its regular monthly meeting on
Wednesday, October 25 to provide regulators with
an update on the still unnamed track’s progress,
and said that financing for the $50 million project,
which will include a five-eighths mile racetrack, is
nearly complete.
“We need one more environmental okay,” Thomas
Fox, chief financial officer and president of Southwest
Casino and Hotel Corp., said. “We need to
have that by next week if we are to begin construction
this year and race in 2007. If not, we won’t be
able to race until 2008.”
Southwest Casino Corporation is a 50 percent equity
partner in the project with MTR Gaming, operators
of Mountaineer Park and Scioto Downs.
The track’s license application was first rejected in
2004 by the Minnesota Racing Commission, which
later decided, after Southwest Casino negotiated
with Canterbury Downs over competitive concerns,
that it would reconsider the group’s application. In
January 2005 the Commission approved, by a 5-3
margin, the track’s license.
The complex will feature a card room, and horses
will be accommodated in a ship-in barn and layup
facility, but the plans feature no permanent
backstretch stabling. Currently, Minnesota law will
permit the track to simulcast the signals from other
harness racetracks, but Southwest Casino and its
partners hope that a bill which will permit the track
to simulcast Thoroughbred signals, now being considered
by the state legislature, will pass.
Purses to Increase at Prairie
Meadows, Decrease at Iowa Fairs
Monday, November 13, 2006 - John Pawlak, USTA
Prairie Meadows will cut its subsidy to harness
racing purses paid at the Iowa county fairs by about
25 percent next year -- from $1.3 million to $1 million.
The decision to continue, but at the reduced
amount, was reached at last week’s meeting of the
Iowa Racing Commission. The track had wanted to
eliminate the subsidy altogether, but restored most
of the subsidy following discussions with the Commission
during this course of this past Thursday’s
meeting.
The track agreed to extend its live Standardbred
meet from the 14 days it hosted in 2006 to 18 days
in 2007, which means purses at that meet will increase
from $642,000 to an estimated $800,000.
The track’s general manager, Gary Palmer, told
the Des Moines Register that the track still wants to
phase out its county fair contributions.

Board of Directors Election
As usual, there are three spots on the WHHA Board
of Directors available for the 2007-2009 term.
Those up for re-election are Gabe Wand, Becky
Swinehart and Gary Rath. All three are seeking
re-election. If you would like to be included on the
ballot, please let Rick Davis or Jeanne Marquis know
by January 6th, 2007. You must be present at the
annual meeting to run for election.

Roger Hammer comes to town!
Our special guest speaker for the afternoon of the
annual meeting and after dinner is trainer/driver
Roger Hammer. Hammer trained and drove
Vivid Photo to a win in the 2005 Hambletonian.
Vivid Photo’s three-year-old year finished out with
a win in the World Trotting Derby, in which he
took his record of 1:51.2, and over $1.4-million
in earnings. This gelding has been a strong force
in the aged trotting events, making over
$600,000 so far in 2006 and taking a record on the
one-turn Colonial Downs track of 1:50.2. Vivid Photo’s
most recent win came in the 1 1/4 mile $250,000 Trotting Classic at Dover
Downs. With over $2.1-million in lifetime earnings, Vivid Photo has become
a fan favorite as he travels to tracks around the country and Canada.
We can only guess what this horse will accomplish in the future for
his owners, Hammer and Todd Schadel, both of Pennsylvania.
Hammer is not only known for his work with Vivid Photo of course. Just
look at the following statistics he has accumulated over the years:

Board of Directors Meeting
Saturday, July 8, 2006 – 9:00am
Elkhorn Fairgrounds
1. Call to Order: Before the races, Gabe called to
order the meeting to plan for the next meeting!
Board members present for this occasion were:
Gabe Wand, Basil Remley, Brian McMahon, Rick
Davis, Becky Swinehart, Jeanne Wendricks, Susan
Schroeder, and Jeanne Marquis. Also assisting were
Nancy Remley, Kay Rath and Jessica Schroeder.
2. Minutes from May Meeting: Minutes from the
May meeting were approved with the following
corrections: The January Meeting will be in 2007
and the third party liability insurance will now be
$22.50. Jeanne W. moved to approve. Brian seconded.
Motion carried.
Tracy Porter, a friend of Becky’s, has volunteered
to present her 8-minute act in which she jumps her
paint horse through a hoop of fire. This will follow
the races and be great for promotions.
6. Open Discussion: After some discussion about
the problems requiring all owners of participants
in our meets to be members of the WHHA, Susan
moved that our requirements be modified to owners
and/or trainers. Becky seconded. Motion Carried.
Starting Gate: We still need people to move the
gate from place to place. Rick will check with Pat
Plant. Deanne is preparing for her Starter’s Test
but will not be available until she can take it. Susan
has passed her Presiding Judge’s test and is now
licensed. She will begin today.
7. Future Dates and Location: Next meeting is undetermined.
3. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer passed on an official
report.
4. Racing Committee: Gabe and Susan reported
that they had to make a quick decision about the
date of a potential Monroe rescheduled meet as
St. Victor’s Church needed to know immediately.
The date offered was the only free weekend in our
schedule, Sunday, August 6th. They accepted and
we will race on that date.
5. 75th Anniversary Celebration: Plans for the celebration
are moving along. A pig, potato salad, buns
and a sheet cake have been ordered locally. The
targeted number is 150-200 people. Nancy will pick
up plates with compartments, napkins and plastic
cutlery. Guests will be invited to bring salads and
desserts to pass. Susan and Becky have assured us
that the manure pit (it’s cheaper) where we will eat
will be appropriately cleaned and decorated. Tables
and benches will be provided. Mike Magee will sing.
The Hall of Fame, Anniversary Hats & logo wear will
be set up there also. Karen Gald has volunteered
to help sell logo wear if she can make it. There will
be a food stand on the grounds for folks before and
during, but not after the races.
A traveling display for which we received a $500
grant from the USTA will be inaugurated and given
to Kim Remley to take to Monroe as a preview for
their next meet. This is designed for easy display
in banks, libraries and other public access places to
stimulate interest and inform communities about
our upcoming events. It is hoped that Gary & Donna
Magee will take it to Wautoma & Weyauwega.

Margaret Caygill Passes Away
LINDEN - Margaret LaVon (Brennum) Caygill, age
72 of Linden, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 30,
2006, surrounded by her family’s love, at St. Mary’s
Hospital in Madison, after a brief illness.
Margaret was born to the late Marie (Gerber)
and Luman Brennum on March 30, 1934, in Dodgeville.
She graduated from Dodgeville High School
in 1952. After graduation, she worked in Madison
for Ernie Bruns Insurance Company. On May 1,
1954, she married David Christopher Caygill at
Linden United Methodist Church. Margaret and David
farmed in Linden Township until 1982. In May,
Margaret and David celebrated their 52nd wedding
anniversary. Margaret and David were truly best
friends, soul mates and life partners, who shared a
love like none other.
As a child of the depression, Margaret never
dreamt she would become a world traveler visiting
many countries including Australia, New Zealand,
a mission trip to El Salvador and ancestral areas
of Great Britain and Switzerland. Family genealogy
was one of Margaret’s passions and her trips always
included a genealogy expedition. Margaret was a
splendid cook, ever adventuresome in the kitchen.
She enjoyed tending her flowers and was especially
fond of her mother’s Christmas cactus that is over
50 years old. She brought warmth and comfort to
her children and grandchildren with her homemade
colorful tied quilts. Margaret enjoyed David’s harness
races, cheering on her favorite driver. But
more than anything, she enjoyed gatherings with
family and friends, often around her kitchen table,
nurturing with food and love. Margaret was a mother
of a large family, each and everyone sharing her
motherly love and warmth. Her devotion as a wife,
mother and grandmother, and her common kindness
to all, will long linger as a fragrant memory in
the home her presence so brightened. Margaret’s
unbridled love of family, friends and community
and her zest for life are a priceless legacy to those
who are left behind. While she will be deeply and
sadly missed by her family and friends, she will be
warmly and richly remembered as a wonderful wife,
a loving mother and a good friend, who lived well,
laughed often, loved much and who left the world
far better than she found it.
Margaret had a long and wonderful life and she
was very lucky (as was her family), you see, she
knew her family loved her and she returned that
love in full measure. During her illness, though her
family was always by her side, she was forever the
loving wife and mother who was more concerned
about her family than of herself. Margaret and her
devoted husband of 52 years, David, built a life with
honor, dignity, unconditional love and caring. Five
children filled her life along with 12 grandchildren.
Left to honor her memory, accept her wisdom, and
remember her love, kindness, caring and laughter
are her husband, David; children, Bruce (Michelle)
Caygill of Edmund, Lori Caygill (Brian Krueger) of
Madison, Jill (Tim) Hughes of Mineral Point, Kelly
(David) Worthington of Richland Center, and Pam
(Scott) Reddell of Linden; grandchildren, Ross and
Reed Caygill, Jeff, Jodi and Kevin Speth, Lacey
(Randy) Hoffman, Katie Hughes, Erin and Grant
Worthington and Lucas, Leslie and Alyssa Reddell.
Margaret was anxiously awaiting the arrival of her
first great grandchild. She is also survived by two
sisters, Doris Miller of Belleville and Katsy (Chap)
Chappell of Sun City West, Ariz.; a brother, Gerald
(Anita) Brennum of Madison; a brother-in-law, Jim
Eveland of Cuba City; three aunts, Clara Gerber of
Madison; Lillian Clinger of Dodgeville and Martha
McMillion of Wawautosa; many brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law; as well as many nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by
her parents, Marie and Luman Brennum; and sister,
Arlyn Eveland.
Margaret had fond memories of the Otter Creek
Lutheran Church near Highland and the Grace Lutheran
Church in Dodgeville in her youth. Margaret
attended the Linden United Methodist Church. She
had a profound appreciation and affection for the
Linden United Methodist Church and Community
and happily volunteered her services for a variety of
duties, including baking her delicious fruit and meat
pies and contributing to the Harvest Home.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on
Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at the LINDEN UNITED
METHODIST CHURCH. Pastor Mary Ann Conklin
officiated with burial in the Linden Cemetery.
Friends were able to call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.
on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at the LULLOFF-PETER-
SON-HOUCK FUNERAL HOME, Dodgeville and at
the church on Wednesday after 10 a.m. In lieu of
flowers, memorials to the Linden United Methodist
Church or the charity of your choice would be
greatly appreciated.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the
race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid
up for me the crown of righteousness. 2 Timothy

Elkhorn Trotting Club Report
The Elkhorn Trotting Club would like to thank everyone
who supported the two race meets this past
summer. A special word of thanks to the Benson
Family who, in memory of Howard Benson, donated
monies towards the purse account enabling us to
double the purses offered at the second race meet.
The horsemen and women at the two race meets
were also very generous to the MACC Fund. Over
60% of horses entered donated a portion of their
winnings to fight childhood cancer. We thank you
for your generosity. WHHA co-sponsors these race
meets to help fill the void in our racing schedules
during the summer; as WHHA members you are
entitled to know how your money is being spent.
