Last February, I was fascinated to watch Jeopardy as an IBM computer named
Watson in honour of the company’s founder took on – and ultimately defeated
– two of the show’s highest scoring contestants. What particularly caught my
interest was a video tour of the IBM research site where Watson was created and
where one word, THINK, stood out in large, bold letters in the building’s lobby.
Apparently THINK was a favourite word of Thomas J. Watson himself when he set
goals for his company and his employees.
Naturally, because Stratford Summer Music is always on my mind, I started to
transfer Watson’s concept to my particular interest, and up popped the word
LISTEN… so I’ve made it my personal word to represent this season of music. (I
also kept recalling that it was the Russian-born composer, Igor Stravinsky, who
made the distinction between listening and hearing. “To listen is an effort but to
hear has no merit; even a duck hears!” he said.)
So I invite you to join me in more carefully listening, and appreciating, this summer’s
music. LISTEN to the world in the music of El Salvador, South Africa, India,
Brazil, Greece and, most of all, our own Canada. LISTEN to the music of the greatest
composers of all time and to the new music of men and women who live and
compose in the 21st century.
LISTEN, and, I hope, ENJOY our eleventh season.
“Just what would some interesting Canadians admit about the role music plays
in their lives?”
That was the question our Artistic Producer, John Miller, was thinking about
when he chatted with Barbara Budd after her wonderful programs with Ben
Heppner last summer.
Now that Barbara is permanently living in Stratford, John wondered whether
Barbara would consider chatting with three people each year if the music festival
were to introduce a new series focusing on what music means to others.
Her immediate answer was positive and so the first plans for a new series came
together. Already Barbara and John are thinking about just whom they and our
audiences would like to meet, and to hear speak about music in their lives, for
next summer.
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Canada’s own JUNO
Awards with two winners fresh from the 2011 ceremonies.
Raising the roof at The Church Restaurant will be John
MacLeod’s Rex Hotel Orchestra, winners of the 2011 JUNO
Jazz Orchestra of the Year, joined by Miss Kellylee Evans,
winner of the 2011 JUNO Jazz Vocalist of the Year for her album,
Nina. For the first time ever, these two winners will be
together as The Church swings like it hasn’t swung in years!
Kellylee Evans has the beautifully casual phrasing of a jazz
singer, the lusty come-on of a soul singer, and the tunes
of a pop star in waiting. She commands the stage with a
regal and casual confidence. Now some may peg this Ottawa
chanteuse as smooth jazz, but her funky arrangements,
urban slant, and lyrics that question and incite make
Kellylee Evans stand out. Kellylee has toured North America
and France opening for such luminaries as Tony Bennett,
George Benson, Maceo Parker, Sharon Jones and the Dap-
John MacLeod’s impeccable credentials in nearly every aspect
arranger, bandleader) have been firmly established in
a distinguished career spanning over three decades on the
This extraordinary young man whom BBC Music Magazine dubbed “...perhaps the
most ‘complete’ pianist of his age” returns to Stratford Summer Music. At age 16,
he has recently been signed by Deutsche Grammophon for recordings and by IMG
Artists, the prestigious international management agency. Jan’s performances of
the music of Frederic Chopin last August in Stratford thrilled his audiences and
now we are honoured and delighted to welcome him back to Stratford for three
dynamic and quite different programs of his own selection.
Before God, and as an honest man, I tell
you that your son is the greatest composer
known to me either in person
or by name. He has taste, and, what is
more, the most profound knowledge of
composition.
So wrote Joseph Haydn in 1785 to the
father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
when he had heard the young composer’s
tribute in music. Mozart, who
had studied Haydn’s scores and particularly
his string quartets which were
considered to be a revolutionary, new
form of musical expression when they
first appeared, wrote 23 string quartets
during his life.
The six beautiful quartets dedicated to
Haydn were written in Vienna between
1782 and 1785 and it was in January
and February, 1785 that the old master
heard his six quartets at two concerts
in Mozart’s own home.
Stratford Summer Music welcomes a
young and promising string quartet
from Toronto – the Annex Quartet – to
perform all six of these masterpieces.
Recognized for their eclectic repertoire
of music, The Annex Quartet – Teddy
Wiggins, Carolyn Blackwell (violins),
Yunior Lopez (viola), and Peter Cosbey
(cello) – continues to deliver dynamic
performances that push the boundaries
of classical music. Since 2008,
the quartet has been in high demand
throughout Toronto and abroad. Recent
performances include the Richard
Bradshaw Amphitheater at the Four
Seasons Centre, Montreal Museum of
Modern Art, and Carnegie Hall.
Join us again this year at these popular concerts set in a
unique venue – a coffee shop – where we find a woman reading
a newspaper. Through her imagination, the articles start
to take on a musical life of their own.
Featuring selections from the Jonathan Monro Songbook
including “Just Be”, “Rumba Raylene”, “Inside Voice”, “You
Don’t Have to Stay”, and “Temporary”.
Jonathan Monro, one of Canada’s most well-known theatre
artists, made his first major appearance as a pianist at Carnegie
Recital Hall in New York City in 1991. As a composer, lyricist
and bookwriter, Jonathan has written over twenty original
pieces for theatre, including AfterImage, Variations on a
Nervous Breakdown and Fear of Flight. Calgary Sun theatre
critic Louis B. Hobson wrote in one of his reviews: “Monro
deserves to be compared to such giants as Sondheim and
Lehrer”. Flying in directly from Los Angeles, where he is currently
starring in Two Pianos, Four Hands, Jonathan will be
remembered by Stratford patrons for his performance in
one of last year’s Cabarets at The Church Restaurant, as the
composer of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival’s 2010
production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona and as an actor
