Its first President, Gerry Culliton, established aBoard of Directors and set the groundwork for The Stratford Arts Foundation asthe parent body of the fledgling music festival. A barbershop quartet from StratfordCentral promoted the concerts in local hotels and the Vancouver ChamberChoir were the first musicians to sail the Avon on a floating stage. poster illustration created by scott mckowendesigned by sharon morrice, über design | july 25 – august 19, 20072007Anniversaries for Glenn Gould and Duke Ellington marked this summer. Mr. Gouldhimself made an appearance “playing” his Goldberg Variations (1955) through thetechnology of a Disklavier Pro piano. His aging friends recalled their associationswith him in Stratford, while two exhibits showed Ruth Abernethy creating theGould-on-the-Bench sculpture and reviewed Gould’s days at the Stratford Festival.Stellar performances by actors Kyle Blair, Lally Cadeau, Tom McCamus andChick Reid with pianist Stephen Runge boosted Bill Richardson’s witty insightsabout Gouldian fans and pets. Nadia Cole performed her last public piano recitalbefore entering a career in medicine, and her friend, David Jalbert, joined her forstunning keyboard duets and solos. The Sky Orchestra floated overhead earlyone morning, the Langley Ukuleles harvested fans at noon, the Regimental Bandof the US Merchant Marine enlivened City Hall Square at dusk, and the Duke’sgranddaughter – the original Satin Doll, Mercedes Ellington – graced a performanceby the Ellington Orchestra where, to quote an admiring trumpeter fromthe band, Miss Barbara Fulton “smoked” with her songs. Climaxing four greatweeks was an unforgettable concert by Vancouver’s Chor Leoni Men’s Choir.10 greatyears!2008poster illustration created by scott mckowen >designed by sharon morrice, über design | july 21 – august 17, 2008Forty-Part Motet became our most attended classical performance; to expressthis unique marriage of music and technology visually, Scott McKowen foundinspiration in the Unicorn Tapestries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NewYork. Shakespeare’s Hamlet inspired a young Canadian composer, Mark Richards,to write a major opera and Summer Music supported him with a workshop andpublic reading of his amazing accomplishment. Jazz took off on the weekendsat Pazzo Ristorante and Jane Bunnett returned to The Church with her Spirits ofHavana sidemen in hot pursuit. Sesame Street’s Bob McGrath sang for parentswho remembered him and their children who loved meeting him. Ronnie Hawkinsarrived in full throttle to the delight of a huge crowd in Lower Queens Park whilejust a little quieter, but no less energetic, was Measha Bruggergosman, stunningin four performances at St. Andrew’s Church. Murray Schafer’s Music for WildernessLake, complete with 13 trombones, dawned upon the neighbours aroundTom Patterson Island but everyone got up to cheer the RBC Finale featuringthree great hometown voices – Roger Honeywell, Gary Relyea, James Westman –backed by a fine performance from Orchestra London.the sun life financial guide to stratford summer music | 21

poster illustration created by eric beddoesdesigned by sharon morrice, über design | july 20 – august 16, 20092009With its individual performances, the Portrait concept was introduced thisyear, featuring soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian and including her tango cabaret,Armenian heritage music sung with the Elmer Iseler Singers, a solo recital accompaniedby Serouj Kradjian, a master class, and a stunning finale with the NationalYouth Orchestra of Canada. Equally stunning was Cameron Carpenter, happiestwhen an electronic organ arrived for his dynamic performances. Guerillamusicians again roamed the streets and a playful quartet of Quebec musicians– the Sax-O-Matics – somehow got loose from the MusicBarge to wander amongtraffic. Four beautiful women, the Made in Canada Piano Quartet, representedthe classics but four “old” characters sprang to life under Bach’s personalleadership to perform his Coffee Cantata (1733) at, appropriately, Balzac’s, agenuine coffee house. Dr. David Goldbloom’s Somers Lecture focused on Creativity,Mental Health and Mental Illness; the Maureen Forrester Next GenerationYoung Artists concert uncovered New Music played by Saskatchewan trumpetessAmy Hovey with electronic manipulation by Saskatchewan composer JeffMorton. A Tribute to America completed the season with The Nathaniel Dett10Chorale, Jackie Richardson, Andrew Craig and Hon. Lincoln Alexander bringingthe audience to its feet.2010greatyears!poster illustration created by john pennoyer >designed by sharon morrice, über design | july 19 – august 22, 2009We leave this season to you, our patrons and readers, to note your own highlights.the sun life financial guide to stratford summer music | 23
