Amazingly, Robert Munsch agreed to allow us to haveKingston composer Marjan Mozetich set his Love you forever to music and heeven agreed to join Quartetto Gelato on stage to read the text for its world premiereperformances here. Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens sent us its appealingTivoli Boys Guard Band, conducted on every occasion by a teenage maestro;the Vatican loaned us organist James Goettsche whose music and stories fromthe momentous, recent funeral of Pope John Paul II captivated his audiences.Summer Music honoured Canada’s Year of the Veteran with a downtown paradeand an evening tattoo; who can forget the flypast of the vintage Harvard airplanesor the appearance of hundreds of bandsmen and women, including the48th Highlanders, in Lower Queens Park! Summer Music undertook its most challengingperformances yet by engaging the famous Marionette Theatre of SchonbrunnPalace, Vienna to perform The Magic Flute with full staging at City Hall plus thevon Trapp Children (of Sound of Music lineage) to sing at the Festival Theatre.Both were knockouts! From Salzburg came Herbert Metzger, organist at the greatCathedral where Amadeus was christened; in Wolfgang’s honour we also servedan afternoon piano series complete with Austria’s national dessert, Sachertorte.L’Orchestre de la francophonie canadienne joined forces with KW’s GrandPhilharmonic Choir, young violinist Alexandre da Costa (with his Stradivariusinstrument) and a group of outstanding soloists for an all-Mozart gala. Not wantingto show too much favouritism to Herr Mozart, we also welcomed the LandwehrBand of Fribourg, Switzerland for snappy marching on Ontario Street, andthe Vancouver Chamber Choir with Stratford actress Lally Cadeau for an unforgettablepremiere of The Translation of Emily, devised for us by CBC broadcaster,Bill Richardson.the sun life financial guide to stratford summer music | 17
