Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens sent us its appealingTivoli Boys Guard Band, conducted on every occasion by a teenage maestro;<strong>the</strong> Vatican loaned us organist James Goettsche whose music and s<strong>to</strong>ries from<strong>the</strong> momen<strong>to</strong>us, recent funeral of Pope John Paul II captivated his audiences.<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Music</strong> honoured Canada’s Year of <strong>the</strong> Veteran with a down<strong>to</strong>wn paradeand an evening tat<strong>to</strong>o; who can forget <strong>the</strong> flypast of <strong>the</strong> vintage Harvard airplanesor <strong>the</strong> appearance of hundreds of bandsmen and women, including <strong>the</strong>48th Highlanders, in Lower Queens Park! The queen of <strong>the</strong> summer was MeashaBrueggergosman and <strong>the</strong> after-<strong>the</strong>atre jesters at The Church Cabarets includedThom Allison, Bruce Dow, Dan Chameroy and Jonathan Goad.10 greatyears!2006poster illustration created by eric beddows >designed by sharon morrice, über design | july 24 – august 13, 2006Mozart 250 was our international inspiration so Austria was home base forhighlights of our sixth season. <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Music</strong> under<strong>to</strong>ok its most challengingperformances yet by engaging <strong>the</strong> famous Marionette Theatre of SchonbrunnPalace, Vienna <strong>to</strong> perform The Magic Flute with full staging at City Hall plus <strong>the</strong>von Trapp Children (of Sound of <strong>Music</strong> lineage) <strong>to</strong> sing at <strong>the</strong> Festival Theatre.Both were knockouts! From Salzburg came Herbert Metzger, organist at <strong>the</strong> greatCa<strong>the</strong>dral w<strong>here</strong> Amadeus was christened; in Wolfgang’s honour we also servedan afternoon piano series complete with Austria’s national dessert, Sacher<strong>to</strong>rte.L’Orchestre de la francophonie canadienne joined forces with KW’s GrandPhilharmonic Choir, young violinist Alexandre da Costa (with his Stradivariusinstrument) and a group of outstanding soloists for an all-Mozart gala. Not wanting<strong>to</strong> show <strong>to</strong>o much favouritism <strong>to</strong> Herr Mozart, we also welcomed <strong>the</strong> LandwehrBand of Fribourg, Switzerland for snappy marching on Ontario Street, and<strong>the</strong> Vancouver Chamber Choir with <strong>Stratford</strong> actress Lally Cadeau for an unforgettablepremiere of The Translation of Emily, devised for us by CBC broadcaster,Bill Richardson.<strong>the</strong> sun life financial <strong>guide</strong> <strong>to</strong> stratford summer music | 17
