PARKIN HONOURED ON
AUSTRALIA DAY
MCC MEMBERS HONOUR ROLL
Four-time premiership coach David
Parkin was among 23 MCC members
recognised in this year’s Australia Day
honours list.
Parkin was awarded an Order of Australia
Medal for “service to the sport of Australian
rules football”.
Born and raised in Melbourne’s innereast,
Parkin played 211 games for Hawthorn
between 1961 and 1974, captaining the
Hawks to the 1971 flag. After his playing
career ended, he coached Hawthorn for four
seasons, winning a premiership in 1978.
However, Parkin achieved his greatest
coaching success at Carlton. He led the
Blues to three flags (1982, 1995 and 1999)
during two stints at the club. He also
coached Fitzroy for three seasons.
Continuing the Blues theme among MCC
members honoured this year, prominent
businessman and former Carlton Football
Club president Graham Smorgon was also
recognised for significant service to
business, and to the community of Victoria.
Ashes series awaits
While the football season is almost
here, many cricket fans have
already turned their attention
to the upcoming Ashes series in Australia
next summer.
In a unique year of scheduling, Australia
will contest the Ashes in England in July/
August before returning home to (hopefully)
defend them in November-January,

FOOTY TIPPING
RETURNS
The MCC website’s AFL tipping
competition gives members a chance
to pit their tipping skills against fellow
members and win some great prizes.
Last year’s winner Geoff McLeod will no
doubt be keen to return to the winner’s
podium, but there is bound to be plenty of
opposition. While the final prize list was
still being confirmed as our deadline
approached, you can be assured the list of
goodies on offer will be enticing.
Entry is free and registration is now
open to all MCC members. Remember,
you’ll need a valid email address in order
to register.
Simply visit www.mcc.org.au and log in
with your user name and password to be
taken to the tipping registration page. (If
you have yet to create your login details,
you’ll need to do this on the website first.)
Almost 3000 members took part in last
year’s competition and we hope to exceed
that number in 2013.
