CHAPTER 3 Packet Delivery Rate (PDR) Improvement for Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) 3.1 Introduction The importance of Route State Hold-time parameter such as ART in AODV is often not realized due to sheer amount of factors involved in the route discovery process. This chapter presents a series of simulations scenarios to emphasize the importance of such parameters not only in mobile Ad-hoc, but also in non-mobile networks. 3.2 Previous Simulation model This simulation is based on the previous work done by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Group in the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and JOHOKOBO,Inc. in OPNET modeler 11.0 is used for simulating the Ad-hoc mobile network [20]. The previous work simulated a disaster stricken area of 500x500 meters as shown in Fig 3.1. The work focused on the multimedia information gathering at disaster and movement behavior in an emergency case. The map in Fig 3.1 represents the simulated map area of a floor in a campus or huge building like a shopping mall (which consists of rooms and corridors). The black, blue and red lines in the map represent different kind of corridors which the stations can move through. The yellow sections represent rooms, offices and storage areas. Two routing protocols were utilized in the simulated map area, AODV and OLSR. These routing protocols are built-in functions in OPNET modeler 11.0. The behavior of these routing protocols can be control through different specific parameter for each routing protocol. 17
