Dear Members
Chairman’s Introduction
The past few years have seen a significant growth in both the number of
members and the levels of activity in the group. SBRG senior ringers and
trainers held meetings during 2010 at which time it was felt that the group
would benefit from a structured management committee. This was felt
necessary both to take the group forward and in order to meet the new
challenges likely to be encountered in support of our growing activities.
By now I hope you will all be aware of the new group constitution that was
drawn up, circulated to members and formally adopted at the group meeting
in October. It is a requirement of this new constitution that we have an elected
committee to oversee the running of the group. Elections took place at that
group members meeting and I have the honour of being the elected Chair of
the group.
It is the intention of the committee to ensure that all members feel involved
and part of our ringing group. The committee members encompass a broad
range of age, experience and licence levels (from T permit to Trainer) and we
hope that in the future other members will wish to become involved in those
necessary functions so that we can all carry on with the hobby we love. There
will be challenges to be met in the raising of funds to carry on the levels of
ringing we are undertaking, without adding to the financial burden on
members. We have a fund raising officer, elected to the committee, whose
role will be to co-ordinate our efforts in this way. If any member has an idea
for raising funds then please let one of the committee know.
There are other aspects that we must look to for the future such as applying
for charitable status. The committee will investigate any areas that will benefit
the long term well being of the group. Above all, please remember it is your
group. We look forward to all members’ input, ideas and involvement. The
following individuals are the elected committee. Please feel free to contact
them. The email address for each committee member can be found in the
login section of the website.
Ringing Secretary’s Report
For the past five years I have started my report by using the words, “The best
year ever”. In 2010’s case, it is not only true but will take some beating. There
were more birds in our area and we had more ringers active at sites in
Derbyshire and South Yorkshire than ever before. Four of our C ringers
upgraded their licences to a senior A status and our congratulations are due
to Eleanor, Alan, Sean and Kevin for their continuing progress. They bring a
variety of new skills to our group and provide positives for future ornithological
developments within our study area. Already the keenness shown by some of
the new A ringers has been refreshing as their suggestions are moving our
practice to a new level. This may have implications for all our ringers as we
move on to agree a ‘Good Practice Code’, which would complement the
guidance provided by the BTO.
With over 20,000 birds processed and recoveries to match, our efforts augur
well for the coming years. Common Redpolls and a Waxwing were star birds
for the year with regular ringing at two CES sites; a Dipper project, a Meadow
Pipit weekend and a Great Tit study all happening alongside weekly ringing at
sites throughout our area.
The death of Mike Wareing was a personal blow during 2010. I lost a close
friend and the group has lost one its founder ringers. His legacy is found in the
ringers we have active today, who continue the ringing activities which we
enjoy. This in turn enables other organisations to use our data, finding it
invaluable in supporting their development plans. We are lucky to have such
diverse habitats within our area and land owners keen to provide permission
to ring birds on their land!
Finally, it is worth mentioning the increasing expertise of ringers within Sorby
Breck as they ring with other groups within the UK and overseas. 2010 has
seen ringers visiting Spain, Cyprus, France and Kenya. The increased
experience this brings is then available to others within the group or potential
new ringers who may be reading this report.
Obituary
Mike J Wareing (1935-2010)
It is with great sadness that we report the death in July of Mike J Wareing, a
founder member of Sorby Breck Ringing Group. Mike was a larger than life
character, enthusiastic about ecology and ornithology. He was an impressive
athlete in his younger days and was an active member of the National
Farmers Union for most of his farming life.
He was trained to ring birds by David Blackmore who introduced him to
ringing and encouraged him to start the Breck Ringing Group. His interest in
ecology also led him to take an active part as a member of the Derbyshire
Naturalist Trust. When Sorby Natural History RG and Breck RG combined in
the mid 1970s, Mike ensured the transition was successful. He was also BTO
Representative for Derbyshire at this time too.
Many of our group and beyond joined Mike on his Braythay expeditions to ring
seabirds, and all were left with lasting memories of Mike and his personality.
Sorby Breck RG owes Mike a great debt of gratitude for the successful ringing
group that exists today.
A growing list of individuals and organisations help and support Sorby Breck Ringing Group’s activities. The group
wishes to thank and acknowledge the support of the following who have contributed to our activities, either financially
or by providing permission to ring on their land. Their support facilitates bird research and the conservation of bird
species in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.
The Avenue Nature Reserve
The development of a new ringing site
The Avenue Washlands Nature Reserve is located at Wingerworth near
Chesterfield, on the site of the former Avenue coking works. The land was
heavily polluted and a big clean-up operation was put in place after the
closure of the works. Part of the project involved turning some of the polluted
land back into an area suitable for wildlife and the formation of the Avenue
Nature Reserve that is today run by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.
Aerial view of the Avenue Nature Reserve
The reserve first opened in 2005 and now also comprises a learning centre, a
facility designed to educate the public about the site and its history as well as
the nature that now inhabits the area. The reserve does not have permanent
wardens, but relies on volunteers to oversee the management of the reserve.
One of the volunteer wardens, Stewart Abbott, approached us about the
possibility of ringing taking place on the site. We began investigating this
possibility at the end of 2008 and undertook two sessions in December which
produced a total of 58 birds ringed.
During 2009 we worked with Stewart to investigate further areas that could be
ringed. Our main ringing area is now a part of the reserve closed to the public
that has scrub areas as well as mature trees and provides a varied habitat for
the birds as well as a feeding station for the winter months. In 2009 we ringed
a total of 244 birds of 21 species, including good numbers of Yellowhammer,
not a common species these days. We found that the scrub areas were good
for Whitethroats, Bullfinches and Chiffchaffs, as well as producing Garden
Warbler and a number of Blackcaps.
There are a number of nest boxes around the reserve but only a couple were
checked in 2009 with 12 pulli tits being ringed. We also had our first attempt at
a Swallow roost that is found in the reed beds at the reserve during the
migration period. The weather was not kind to us during that season and we
only managed one session and caught 11 Swallows, but we knew there was a
potential to catch more.
During 2010 we have seen the number of birds ringed increase to 468. During
the breeding season all the nest boxes were checked this year and 98 pullus
ringed are included in the total. The Swallow roost was again present in the
24

eed beds, although numbers did vary considerably. However we did manage
to ring 96 Swallows over two sessions.
During 2010, 30 species were handled and the catching possibilities have
now been increased with the addition of another feeding site in another part of
the reserve. It is hoped that in the coming years we will be able to further
increase the potential of the site.
One of the most interesting aspects of ringing is the information on controls
that we receive. In the short time that we have been operating at the Avenue
we have had some good controls. A Sand Martin, the only one ever caught
that appeared in the nets during one of our roost sessions was a bird ringed in
Icklesham. Two Reed Buntings ringed as first year birds at Williamthorpe
were found at the Avenue in subsequent years. A Goldfinch ringed in
Bedfordshire was controlled in December 2009, a 145 km movement, and one
of the group’s Swallow pullus from Duckmanton was caught during one of the
roost sessions. Pride of place though goes to the Blackbird ringed in
December 2008, during our first ever Avenue ringing session, and was
controlled in Denmark in March the following year. This bird had obviously
been a winter visitor and was returning to Scandinavia to breed.
During the last two years we have had the opportunity to provide ringing
demonstrations at the reserve for Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. These have been
well attended and we intend to continue with these events and have already
been booked for a demonstration next May!
We hope that 2011 will see a further growth in the numbers of birds ringed at
this site which is still developing for us as we learn more about it. We thank
Stewart Abbott and the other volunteers for their help and encouragement and
particularly for keeping the feeding stations provisioned and the net lanes cut!
Scarce Woodland Migrants
As a ringing group we are fortunate to live in an area where there is a diverse
range of habitats within easy reach of group members. One of these habitats
is ancient Oak woodland and several members of the group run nest box
schemes for Pied Flycatchers (see following article).
The same habitat also provides a home for Wood Warblers and Redstarts. At
one of these sites, Jack Street and I undertook colour ringing of Wood
Warblers to support a study at the University of Sheffield by Dr. Karl Evans.
The pictures below illustrate why it is worth putting in all the hard work to ring
these handsome birds.
The colour ringing project included
monitoring bud burst of trees in the
wood and using sticky traps to look
at insect availability. Four birds were
caught and ringed, but although
there were at times three singing
males in the area, only one nest
was located. Sadly, this was
predated when the chicks were 7-8
days old. There are plans to
continue the project next year. Other
items of note include a nest of
Willow Warblers which were ringed and evidence of successful breeding for
Woodcock.
We are extremely grateful to Severn Trent Water for allowing us access to the
site and for their continued support for ringing activities in the area.
A new Pied Flycatcher nest box scheme
The results of one of the group’s Pied Flycatcher nest box schemes near
Ladybower Reservoir are shown below. During the early months of 2010,
Jack Street and I spent some time re-siting the boxes so that we had 3 rows
of 20 boxes, each row about 15m higher than the previous one. Over the next
few years we hope to look at how the boxes are used to see if any patterns
with regard to habitat or altitude can be determined. We also have an extra 5
boxes in the mixed Oak and Birch woodland with the hope of attracting
Redstart and 10 boxes in an area of conifers.
(Above and below) A second year Male Pied Flycatcher, returning to breed locally, but not at
the same site. The bird was aged as a 5 as it showed a clear contrast in the greater coverts.
Pied Flycatcher success
The 6 Pied Flycatcher nests yielded 34 fledged young from 39 eggs, a
fledging/eggs success rate of 87%. The number of nests and fledged young
were down slightly on 2009, where 49 young were ringed at 8 nests, 47 of
these birds fledging. The numbers of Pied Flycatcher pullus ringed by the
group over the past 2 years are shown in the table below. As can be seen, the
numbers of birds ringed at 7 of the 9 sites are down on last year with 146
pullus ringed compared to 192 in 2009. It remains to be seen whether this is a
downward trend in the area.
Dipper
Dippers in Lathkill Dale
Lathkill Dale, near to Over Haddon in Derbyshire is an idyllic limestone dale
fed by underground water supplies. The water is exceptionally clear, almost
like glacial run-off. The River starts and finishes its journey in Derbyshire. It
has a main footpath which follows the river often alongside one of its banks
and this popular route way has natural stopping places alongside weirs,
ponds and waterfalls. The dale has steep sided limestone buttresses, wooded
at its early stages with mixed deciduous trees and the occasional conifer. The
trees thin out considerably at the top end of the dale where you can see the
limestone outcrops clearly with their grassy slopes and screes. The visitors to
the site I meet are friendly, mainly responsible and appear to be interested in
the plants and wildlife as well as the natural beauty of Lathkill Dale.
Dippers live alongside this activity and the helpful information boards erected
by Natural England who manage activities in the dale, ask, through these
notices, for consideration towards the Dippers breeding in the dale. The
Dippers in the course of their breeding season become accustomed to the
human activity and can appear to be at ease with their habitat and the people
in the dale. However, beneath this calm are more troubling findings.
Reproduction success of Dippers is now at its lowest for many years. Dog
walkers, bird watchers, photographers, dry summers and reduced aquatic life
in the river have all been put forward as reasons for poor breeding success,
but, all of this is conjecture with little research available to investigate the
30

eason for the Dipper's continuing poor breeding success. To all intents the
problems identified have always been part of Lathkill Dale.
Geoff Mawson, with permission from Natural England has ringed Dipper
nestlings in the dale for a number of years and working with Phil Bowler from
Natural England began to make a number of important observations that were
worthy of further investigation. These were:
• The success of first broods was of vital importance to Dippers in
Lathkill Dale often being the only confirmed breeding success.
• Replacement clutches and deserted nests were the norm.
• Dippers soon dispersed from the dale with few records of overwintering
birds.
• There were few nest and roosting sites along the majority of the river
and the traditional sites that were available were also popular picnic
spots.
• Nests were often constructed on the outside of walls and these were
vulnerable to natural predation.
To investigate further what was taking place a research project into the
Dippers of Lathkill Dale began in 2010. It started with practical observations
supported by the placing of ten nest pipes on stretches of the river. The sites
were chosen as an alternative nest site or placed where Dippers had been
observed foraging but not breeding.
Left to right: Phil Bowler, Paul Hooper, Dave Pearce, Geoff Mawson, George Briggs and Mark
Jeffery
Representatives from Natural England, the Peak Park and ringers from Sorby
Breck ringing Group worked together on the 2nd February 2010 to put nest
31

pipes in place. Interestingly, only two Dippers were present in the dale on this
date and they remained the only birds present until the 25th February 2010.
The River Lathkill is never fierce even during times of heavy rainfall. Being fed
from underground sources and channelled along man made routes into ponds
and over weirs the river level is mostly stable until summer months .Then in
dry conditions upland sections can disappear altogether only to return
'miraculously' when underground water levels rise again.
Artificial nest pipe
32
Colour ringed Dipper (left)
It was decided as an important
part of the project that all Dippers
nesting in the dale would be
ringed either as adults or
nestlings. A BTO ring would be
used on the bird's right leg with an
orange ring below to identify the
River Lathkill. Two additional
colour rings on the Dipper's left leg
would allow the identification of
each individual bird in the field. It was important to follow the activities and
movement of individual birds. Observations would be weekly with English
Nature agreeing to provide additional data. Paul Hobson, Natural England's
official photographer would also record the project and inform other
photographers through their official websites of the research taking place.

Weekly Observations in March 2010
From the end of February the adult male (Green/Blue) and first year female
(Green/Green) were still at the waterfall site. Adult male (G/B) had first been
ringed as one of four pullus two years earlier. They were possibly the only two
Dippers recorded in the dale throughout the winter. The male (G/B) had been
observed on the 1st March singing and the pair had been observed at the first
stage of nest building. A second adult male (Green/Red) had arrived on the
4th March and had taken to occupying the lower stretches of Lathkill Dale.
On the 11th March I checked the Dippers again. Two photographers had
taken position on the pathway a few metres away from the waterfall site
where the pair had shown signs of nest building the week before. The
photographers were from Derby and Gloucester and had clearly travelled a
long distance to photograph Dipper. We left them at the waterfall site to
survey the upper reaches of the dale. We were surprised that the
photographers were still in the same position when we returned. We could
only locate the male G/B and speculated that the female G/G could be egg
laying. Imagine our surprise as we walked down the dale to find female G/G
now with the second adult male G/R. This observation adds to the increasing
amount of data showing how sensitive breeding Dippers are to disturbance at
this early stage.
The 18th March continued with the Dippers still in a state of flux. The female
G/G was not seen at all. Male G/R was seen numerous times in the dale
wandering from the lower section to the weir which adjoins the waterfall
territory of male G/B which is higher up the river. We could have left our
observations at that but decided to move out of the dale and further down
river to see if there were any Dippers present. There was one male Dipper, it
was G/B! For some reason G/B had moved the full length of the dale and
beyond.
During our survey walk we stopped to look at six Dippers to check their
details. The value of colour ringing was evidenced as they turned out to be the
same two male birds. The point was made by George Briggs that without
colour rings; we could have left the dale thinking that Dippers were present in
reasonable numbers. Paradoxically there were just two highly mobile male
birds.
The 25th March showed little change in number of Dippers with only the two
males seen at different places along the dale. G/B was at the waterfall again
and in full song. It was the first sustained singing we had heard this breeding
season. G/R was seen below his territory but female G/G we didn't see for the
second week but believed her to be incubating in a natural site, possibly the
waterfall. We didn't want to add to the disturbance by searching at this stage.
We did look in the ten pipes we had erected previously but none had been
used so far.
Weekly observations in April 2010
The 1st April could well have been a February day in more ways than one.
Firstly, there had been deep snow on the way to Lathkill Dale; it was bitterly
33

cold and there were only two male Dippers seen. G/B was at the waterfall
again and keen to stay there. We continued to consider that the female was
incubating. We also pinpointed a suitable nest site but did not attempt to
disturb. G/R was at the lower edge of this territory and was seen to be chased
off by the rival bird. For the third week we saw only the same two males
perhaps indicating that the harsh winter we were still experiencing should be
included in the list of negatives experienced by the Dippers in Lathkill Dale.
The dale was very busy with people on the 8th and it proved encouraging too
as there was a new female with G/B. They were observed nest building at the
waterfall site staying together all morning despite the constant flow of visitors
passing close to their nest site. Unfortunately, we were back to G/B and G/R
for the rest of our visits during April with no female present again in the Dale.
The two males were observed at different places along the full length of the
river, feeding, loafing around and singing but no further breeding attempt was
evident. There were however observational bonuses on the 29th to hear the
dale full of song from migrant birds, especially Redstarts. Ravens too were
calling throughout the morning encouraging their three recently fledged young
to fly across the dale. Spring was here and as yet still no breeding Dippers in
Lathkill Dale.
Weekly observations in May and June 2010
May continued to record just one Dipper, G/B throughout the month .Two of
our visits drew a blank but calls from a well used refuge under an overhanging
tree near to the waterfall suggested the presence of G/B. June 3rd began a
new month in the same way with Dipper G/B disappearing for cover as we
passed. Despite waiting and observing from a distance the Dipper never
came out of its cover. It wasn't until we had finished our walk through the Dale
that we located a second bird, a juvenile Dipper near to the Dale entrance. It
was unaccompanied and flew some distance up to the experimental habitat
section of the river where it preened and rested. This was the first sign that we
had of a Dipper moving in during its post juvenile dispersal. In June, the end
of our study period, observations continued to disappoint. Both males, G/B
and G/R, returned to the dale but proved elusive, hiding or travelling down the
river to lower sections out of the area. The return of male G/R was significant
because his return was after a long period and it coincided with another
immature Dipper moving in too. It seemed probable that G/R had bred out of
Lathkill Dale and returned in the post breeding period with one of its offspring.
The extended nature of the study from February to July ruled out the
possibility of G/R breeding in the Dale itself.
Conclusions
Lathkill Dale is noted for its Dippers and reports fifty years ago recorded up to
ten pairs but commented on the Dipper's decline due to the dale's popularity
and the fact that the river's water flow is greatly reduced during dry periods,
occasionally stopping altogether. In 2010 there were no Dippers found
breeding successfully in Lathkill Dale.
So what has changed? The previous winter was the most severe for some
years and this may have reduced an already vulnerable population. There
34

was also repeated evidence of intrusive photography during our visits at the
two attempted nest sites often for prolonged periods. Some photographers we
talked to had travelled long distances to come and photograph Dippers. Many
others came later in the season only to be disappointed because there were
no breeding Dippers present to photograph.
As we walked the dale week after week it became more and more evident that
the major problem Dippers had was not the people but the proximity of
people. The Dippers had few places to hide. Repeatedly, we would think we
had another Dipper only to find that the same colour ringed bird had moved
the full length of the Dale. Most of the river has permanent access to its bank
on one side with narrow river channels along some stretches increasing the
impact of disturbance. In 2010 this was a significant barrier to the Dippers'
attempts to breed in Lathkill Dale.
Recommendations for 2011
Dippers are synonymous with Lathkill Dale and their presence along with the
many visitors to the Dale should be both desirable and possible. There does
however need to be a period where the Dippers have the time to recover their
numbers.
We recommend in 2011 that three short sections of the river have the
temporary path suspended to provide permanent loafing area s for the birds to
fly to and not be disturbed from. It is the constant disturbance that is the issue.
The main route through the dale will be unaffected as the identified exclusion
areas have only informal paths which become overgrown by nettles in July.
We are not against photographers and during the course of our study we
enjoyed talking to responsible photographers interested in our findings and
keen to see the Dippers back in numbers. What is needed in 2011 is for an
informal agreement amongst photographers to keep a respectful distance
from any early active nest site keeping well away during the first stages of
nest building and breeding. Once successfully on territory and feeding young
Dippers do become more confident and will tolerate a higher level of
disturbance. The first attempt to breed is crucial for Dippers in Lathkill Dale. If
their first attempt fails a second attempt begins to coincide with increasing
visitor numbers and falling water levels and is less likely to succeed. Evidence
during 2010 found female Dippers deal with early failure by moving out of the
dale to attempt to breed elsewhere.
Ringing Swallow Pulli
Most people are familiar with the saying, ‘One Swallow does not a summer
make’. However, for many people the return of the Swallows from Africa each
year does herald the start of summer and the promise of welcome warmer
days just around the corner.
37
For ringers, the arrival of the
Swallows in April means the
opportunity to ring these
magnificently aerobatic birds with
the primary aim of monitoring their
status in a rapidly changing world,
and with the hope of a recovery
from an exotic wintering location.
Swallows comprise a large
proportion of the group’s annual
total: 1,585 of 19,319 birds. Although adult Swallows are caught by the group
at one or two favourable sites, the majority of birds (1413 this year) are ringed
as pulli at numerous farms and other suitable buildings in the area. One
ringer, Harry Vilkaitis, deserves special mention for ringing 1144 of these
1413 birds, but 15 other ringers also contributed to the total, with several new
schemes getting off the ground in 2010.
From my own point of view, having
received my pullus endorsement for
Swallows earlier in the year, I was
fortunate to be given permission to
ring at a couple of farms in the
Mayfield Valley to the South West of
Sheffield: Hangram Lane Farm and
Meadow Farm. Although I was a little
slow off the mark, missing the first
broods, I was still able to ring 56 pulli
with my last nest ringed on the 5th
September. With permission to ring
on another farm in the area (Brown Edge Farm) in 2011, I am hoping to add to
this year’s total and look forward to monitoring the populations at these farms
for years to come.
I would like to extend my personal thanks to the farmers who gave me
permission to ring, all of whom were very welcoming and genuinely interested
in the birds and the ringing process. To add to that, I would like to thank all the
farmers and landowners that allow Swallow pullus ringing on their property,
without whose generous cooperation none of this important monitoring would
be possible.
Ringing in Southern Spain
As I write this in December following a month of ice and snow, the summer
past seems a long way off, but in August of this year I was in an altogether
more pleasant climate. I had ventured to southern Spain for a ringing holiday
with Richard Banham, my first foreign ringing trip and part of what I hoped
would be valuable experience towards gaining ‘A’ permit status.
My wife and I arrived in Gibraltar
around midday and were met by
Richard at the airport. Flying in to
Gibraltar is a spectacular start to any
holiday: the runway extends out into
the sea like a spit and as the
aeroplane hurtles along towards the
end you start to hope that the pilot
has judged it right today! Throughout
the holiday Richard was the perfect
host and we were taken shopping and
shown round the local town, Puerto
de la Duquesa, before arriving at the apartment. The apartment, with
stunning views over the town and out to sea was as luxurious as I had been
led to believe and was as good a base for a ringing holiday as you could
imagine. After unpacking we took the opportunity for some sunbathing and a
relaxing meal before an early night in readiness for the first ringing session in
the morning.
We met Richard at about 4.30am as the first site we were to visit was over an
hour’s drive away. This was a fairly new site in the mountains and Richard
was hopeful of good things. When we arrived, we were met by one of
Richard’s trainees, a young Spaniard called Jose Luis. We put up 6 nets
including one around a water trough and sat back to see what would appear.
As it transpired, a grand total of 4 birds were caught leaving our host
somewhat disappointed. However, I was feeling rather elated as these 4
birds were 2 Short-toed Treecreepers and 2 Rock Buntings, one a stunning
male. The Short-toed Treecreeper was also my 100th species ringed. My
wife Gen was shown how to scribe by Richard, a role she took on for the rest
of the trip.
38

Short-toed Treecreeper
As we were not catching, possibly due to an overnight storm having dispersed
the birds, we took down the nets and went back to a river valley for lunch. As
we ate our sandwiches with Bee-eaters skimming along the river and the
occasional Hoopoe and Turtle Dove in the trees, it was difficult to imagine a
better place to be.
For the second day, Richard took
us to a site he could rely on and
where he carries out his equivalent
of a CES. This was an excellent
site where two rivers meet and
Richard was hoping for a productive
and uneventful day. Although the
day turned out to be productive with
a good range of birds ringed
including Little Ringed Plover,
Nightingale, Corn Bunting, Cirl
Bunting and a good variety of
warbler species including the newly split Isabelline Warbler, it was certainly
not uneventful! Jose Luis got his car stuck in the river, although Richard was
able to tow him out, and an illegal bird trapper meant a slightly early finish
again as Richard had had nets taken on previous occasions.
39

40
Isabelline Warbler (left)
Day three was a trip to the valley
where we had watched the Beeeaters
and Hoopoe and as we drove
along in the dark I joked with Richard
that surely nothing else could go
wrong. We both agreed and were
both equally astounded when we
found the road up to the valley had
been closed for repair, a huge mound
of limestone blocking any hope of
further progress. Fortunately, the wind was calm and plan B was put into
action, ringing on a Spanish equivalent of heathland. This produced a varied
mix of species including Subalpine Warbler and a pair of Melodious Warblers
as well as good numbers of the ubiquitous Sardinian Warbler.
Melodious Warbler (right)
The morning of day four and this
time no jokes about things going
wrong! A trip to an Avocado orchard
should have produced the goods but
again bird numbers were low,
although the species involved, such
as Firecrest and Bonelli’s Warbler,
had me enthralled and for me at
least this was sufficient
compensation for the 12 sixty foot
nets we had to take down in the torrid, midday heat.
Ringing in Avocado Orchard (left)
Although the numbers of birds
caught during these first four days
were not huge, the species mix
was excellent, particularly for
warblers. It also gave me a chance
to study the birds in detail and to
get used to the extra observations
and biometrics taken by Richard.
Richard is a very knowledgeable
ringer and I was able to glean
many interesting tips and hints to ageing and sexing birds. Particularly useful
was the emphasis on looking at the whole bird and not just a single feature for
ageing, and detailed examination of median and lesser coverts etc. It was
also helpful to see birds which may be encountered only rarely in the UK such
as Nightingale, my personal favourite of the trip.

Nightingale
The experience gained in these first four days was to stand me in good stead
for the last two days when the birds appeared in numbers. A trip to an
Orange orchard produced about 90 birds, with a good mix of finches including
several Serin, and my final new bird of the trip, an Iberian Chiffchaff. On the
last day we ringed in some scrub and reed at the back of a beach and caught
a similar number of birds with Cetti’s Warbler featuring prominently. A local
beach hut was drafted in to make a very civilised ringing station as the
temperatures soared towards 40 deg C.
Cetti’s Warbler (left) and Iberian Chiffchaff (right)
Six days of ringing in a wide variety of habitats had given me experience of 15
new species in the hand as well as different subspecies of common UK birds
41

such as Blackcap. Early mornings each day were made easily manageable
by several hours relaxing round a pool in the afternoon followed by lazy
evenings spent at restaurants in the local town or on the veranda of the
apartment. Richard and his wife, Thelma, were excellent hosts catering for all
our needs and entertaining us at a local Tapas bar and Ice-cream parlour one
evening. As an introduction to ringing abroad, I had the feeling that we were
being spoiled and I’m sure that other ringing outposts will not have the same
level of creature comforts. I am also sure that we will return again soon.
Success at new moorland site
Having commenced ringing activities at a new moorland site on 2nd of
September, it quickly became evident that good catches of Meadow Pipits
were on the cards. The following numbers show just how good:
2/9-85, 3/9-54, 4/9-68, 7/9-29, 8/9-105, 25/9-24, 26/9-13, 27/9-4, 28/9-105,
30/9-37
42

Moorland ringing station
The total number of birds caught was 527. This includes 1 Goldfinch, 2 Reed
Buntings and 2 retrapped Meadow Pipits. As with all ringing activities, the
weather (wind, mist and sun) all affected the outcome on this moorland site,
including the comfort of myself. There were some unusual occurrences, for
example a Meadow Pipit aged 3 with the second primary on both wings (no
wax sheaths) being stunted (see photo below).
Meadow Pipit wing
43

Several Meadow Pipits had wing lengths of between 85 and 88mm,
presumably more Northern birds; Tree Pipits were ruled out by the wing
formula and hind claw. A check on bill thickness/width using the B ring
aperture on the ringing pliers revealed that the aperture stopped on some
birds at the beginning of the nostrils whilst on others it went right to the back
of the bill, but of course the majority were in between. The first visit resulted in
85 birds, so it seems likely that visits in August would also have yielded
catches of Meadow Pipits - either on passage or about to undertake it.
At the beginning of October at this new moorland site, Meadow Pipits were
caught in reasonable numbers with 147 ringed in the first 10 days. Numbers
dropped as the month progressed but a few late birds are still around and 3
were ringed on the last day of the month.
Another good species ringed during the month was Skylark with 7 being
ringed in total. They were caught in the Meadow Pipit triangle and seemed to
be easier to catch when the Meadow Pipits were around.
Meadow Pipit Weekend
The start of September is an exciting time for members of Sorby Breck
Ringing Group as it heralds the start of the Meadow Pipit passage which lasts
well into the autumn. The group is ideally situated for this, with several
members living close to the Peak District National Park, and we have several
moorland sites across the area. In addition to Meadow Pipits, ringing on the
moorland also produces a variety of species that are not often encountered at
our other sites. These have included Redstarts, Stonechats and Tree Pipits,
for example.
The idea for Sorby Breck Ringing Group members to concentrate their efforts
on Meadow Pipits for a dedicated weekend in September came about
because of previous ringing efforts. From analysis of ringing data, the 17th
September seemed to be the date when the peak passage occurs in our area.
On the moorland fringe the flocking pipits begin to move more widely and then
fly off the moors towards the coast.
With ringers planning to operate seven sites, we hoped to ring enough of our
breeding Meadow Pipits to maximise future recoveries and to collect data to
both understand timing and movement dynamics.
The 18th Saturday proved to be a breezy morning but a good group turnout
resulted in over 390 birds processed at four sites, the majority being Meadow
Pipits. With four sites planned for the next day, our goal as a group was to
45

ing 1000 Meadow Pipits in September. Although rain prevented any ringing
on the Sunday, we ended the month with 1104 Meadow Pipits ringed and an
annual total of 1836 birds!
Thanks to everyone in the group for such a good turnout.
Unusual Lesser Redpoll
In the middle of November, Sorby Breck members targeted Redpoll at Bryn's
70 Acre site in Sheffield. 90 Redpoll were processed one day, as well as 3
Common Redpoll that were associating with the large flocks of Lesser
Redpoll.
The most interesting bird of the weekend was a "white" adult Lesser Redpoll
pictured here. The bird had in fact been ringed previously as an immature bird
in January this year. It then presumably returned north to its breeding area
and assumed this plumage after its first full moult. One thing is for sure; it was
a beautiful bird to see in the hand.
Lesser Redpoll with suspected vitiligo
46

An explanation as to why the bird has this white feathering has been provided
by Hein van Grouw, Bird Group Curator at the Natural History Museum in
Tring:
“This Redpoll is indeed interesting but certainly not rare. There are many
mutations which can cause a change in the plumage pigmentation and
therefore an aberration in the colour. All kind of colour names are seemingly
randomly used, now and in the past, to identify mutations in birds. Most
commonly and most often wrongly, applied is the name Albino or Partial
Albino. This name is widely used for all sorts of different colour aberrations,
but in only a few percent of the cases it is used correctly. Due to the mutation,
an Albino is unable to produce melanin pigments at all. A mostly white bird
which nevertheless shows some form of melanin pigmentation is never an
Albino, by definition.
Therefore ‘Partial Albino’ does not exist and is a contradiction in terms.
This latter name is often used for what is in fact Leucism. Leucism, from the
Greek Leukos = white, can be defined as the partial or total lack of pigments
in feathers (and skin). The lack of pigment is due to the congenital and
heritable absence of pigment cells from some or all of the skin areas where
they are normally present and where they normally provide the growing
feather with pigment. Depending on the sort of leucism the amount of white
feathers can vary from only a few white feathers (= partial leucistic) to totally
white individuals. The totally white individuals always have colourless skin as
well. Partial leucistic birds can have normal-coloured bill and feet depending
on where the colourless patches occur on the specimen.
However leucistic birds always have normal coloured eyes.
There are however other congenital causes for pigmentless feathers.
Whereas leucism is visible after hatching, vitiligo (also called progressive
greying), for example, is a progressive condition that arises after a certain
age. Vitiligo is defined as the heritable progressive loss of pigment cells with
age. From a certain age, when the progressive loss starts, the bird will get
more white feathers after every moult. This is not uncommon in birds and it is
known in Jackdaws and Blackbirds for example. And it seems it is not
uncommon in Redpolls either as I have seen several identical specimens over
the years.”
Nest Box Scheme Results 2010
There are 42 boxes in position, none of them open fronted, 24 of which were
empty with 14 having been damaged with tops missing. Two boxes had nest
bases which developed no further, box 5 was later removed and box 44 had a
wasps nest inside it.
Sixteen boxes were used, two of which, numbers 30 and 38 were put up by St
Michael’s School.
On the first visit box 8 had a Great tit sitting and box 12 a Blue Tit. The next
visit found that both boxes had enlarged entrance holes and had been
predated, presumably by a woodpecker. Of the remaining 14 boxes, 5 were
used by Great Tits, 7 by Blue Tits and 2 by Nuthatches. All these 14 boxes
were successful.
48
Boxes 12 and 15 were again used,
making this the 22 nd time these
boxes have been used since the
scheme started 26 years ago. Box 15
has been used continuously each
breeding season for the last 12
years; unfortunately box 12 was one
of those predated.
The least successful boxes are still numbers 29 and 42 which again have not
been used. Box 42 is due to be removed and mended so possibly 29 will join
it and be re-sited!
