Increase colorectal cancer screenings
37 colorectal screenings will be provided by the Early Bird Mobile Medical Clinic
in 2013.
Increase awareness about the warning signs and symptoms of stroke
An informational brochure is being distributed throughout the hospital and on the
TGMC website.
Educational programming through TGMC’s To Your Health show will be aired
throughout the year.
Frequent messages on TGMC’s Facebook and Twitter postings of social media
will also educate our community about the warning signs for stroke and the
importance of getting to the hospital emergency department immediately.
Also, a stroke risk assessment is located on the TGMC website at:
Increase participation in community health screenings
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC demonstrates a strong commitment to
community outreach which is evidenced by multiple FREE cancer screenings, a
vast array of community education, and a patient navigator to support cancer
patients throughout their journey. In 2012, 17 screenings were conducted and over
730 people were screened for breast, prostate, colorectal, oral and skin cancers −
all at no cost to the patient if they are uninsured. 79 abnormalities were found and
three cancers detected. These wellness and prevention efforts literally help to
save hundreds of lives annually.
In 2013, an additional 21 Early Bird Mobile Medical Clinic screenings will be
held in Terrebonne, Lafourche and St. Mary Parishes.
The Foundation for TGMC was formed in late 2012 and its first goal is to obtain a
vehicle that can be used for health screenings in the community. Fundraisers are
being held to further these efforts so that people in our community have access to
much needed preventative health screenings.
The internet serves as a communication vehicle
In Louisiana, 69.7% of households have Internet access at some location inside or
outside the home, which ranks 44 th in the nation. (Louisiana Fact Book 2011.)
