FIREFIGHTERS QUEST
For Burn
Survivors
Spring / Summer 2010

Unbelievable that ALL of Us have been a Family for 14 years, and together have raised funds for Burn Survivors and
Burn Organizations - this year $130,000 in 5 days and covering 6 Counties. Every volunteer of Quest was made to feel at
home at every stop, and it was truly a great feeling from the Fire Service. This year was a big change due to moving the
dates of the rally up 1 month so as to not conflict too much with the fire season. I want to thank each participant, every
Area Coordinator, every Fire Department, the CSFA Steamer Team, and the California Highway Patrol for joining
forces for the betterment of others. To make the 14 th Annual Rally a success it required a lot of support and commitment
from not only volunteers, but also Corporate, State and Local officials as
well. The California Highway Patrol has been a super supporter for 14
years. Every year it is a real privilege to associate with each Officer and
Sgt. Many thanks for the years of support. This year, Quest was able to
include another office of the California Highway Patrol (San Louis
Obispo) for the escort which brings a total of 4 Divisions and 13 Offices
that supported Quest for Rally 2010.
Quest must also thank and appreciate the California State Firemen’s
Assoc. and Antique Horse-Drawn Steamer. Firefighters Quest was very
fortunate to meet Dave Hubert and Barbara 7 years ago at the annual Fox
Studios Health Fair. Dave Hubert and his Team have been such great
supporters of Quest over the years, and the Rally was very fortunate to
have them with us on the first day, Monday, May 3 rd in the Rancho Cucamonga area. This event in itself has become quite
a public attention getter. The Steamer Team did 1 stop this year and it was a great addition. Thank you so very much
CSFA, Dave and Barbara Hubert, and every member of the Steamer team for your continuous support over the last 7
years. This 1 Team does over 60 shows a year, and they seem to still have time for Firefighters Quest, burn survivors and
burn programs, and the many other assistance programs of Quest.
Hard to believe but thanks to the Fire Service Quest has prevailed. A great deal of thanks and appreciation to every
Fire Chief of the Departments that we visited during the week to allow Quest into their home for not only this year but for
the last 14. Each volunteer of Quest appreciates your hospitality and support. The Quest Rally started on Monday, May 3 rd
and covered Riverside, High Desert, Inland Empire, Mountain High, and Big Bear. On the first day Quest had 3 ground
legs and a flight to Big Bear. The flight to Big Bear was provided by another great sponsor – Mercy Air. Mr. Roy Cox,
Bill Jones, and Mercy Air have been a BIG piece of Quest‟s success for 14
The usual suspects
years. With 14 years under their belt, Mercy Air authorized a helicopter to be
used solely for Firefighters Quest during Rally 2010. This was such a great
addition to have a helicopter designated only for Quest. Thank you ALL at
Mercy Air for such a great time. It seems that whatever Quest would like to
do, Mr. Cox and Bill seem not too hesitant in delivering. What an awesome
company and a huge supporter of Quest and its mission. Mr. Roy Cox is a
huge part of this commitment to Quest and is very much appreciated.
I joined the Riverside Leg with Mike Matheson – Norco Fire as the Area
Coordinator. Mike was able to join us this year along with Assistants Chris
Fowler and Scott Carpenter from March Fire and they all 3 of them did a
great job running the Riverside Leg and are very much Appreciated. It was a
great morning, and then we stopped at Chic-Fil-A for lunch. This was the 3 rd
year for their support. After lunch, Quest packed up and we started on the road to meet up with the Inland Empire leg at
Upland with the March F.D. rig.
On Tuesday, May 4 th , Conrad and Catriona Batham and I drove to Rialto
where we met Mercy Air and flew over to Catalina Island for the Island Rally
on Wednesday, May 5 th . What a great time Quest had meeting with some
hospital nurses and delivering some needed Quest supplies and then setting
up shop on the boardwalk to sell Quest apparel. Capt. John Meffert and the
Avalon City Fire crews were super spending the day with us and supporting
Quest and Burn Survivors. A beautiful day with beautiful people for a
beautiful cause. We spent the night and returned to the mainland on
Wednesday, May 5 th before heading up to Santa Maria for the Santa Barbara
LA Firemen‘s Credit Union
Art Mesta with a
Laguna Firefighter

leg on Thursday, May 6 th for some of Quest, while the others prepared for the Ventura Leg.
Thanks so much to Conrad (who made it this year) and Cat Batham for a great job.
On Wednesday, May 5 th , Quest covered the Orange County with Scott Stephens as the Area
Coordinator for the past 14 years. What great commitment and support from Scott, even after a
new family he stills finds the time for others. We started in Brea and thank you so much for the
continental breakfast to start the day off. Quest was also able to visit and have lunch at Los
Alamitos F. D. which they have been providing for the last 5 years. Firefighters Quest wishes to
thank Scott Stephens, and each and every person in Orange County for being able to switch days
for Rally 2010 due to scheduling conflict with the California Highway Patrol, and for some
individuals who even held up their vacation to support Quest. Orange County partnered with the
San Gabriel Valley and as such we had 2 great ground legs on Cinco de Mayo. The Burn
Survivors and Burn Organizations are truly thankful for your generosity and continued support.
On Wednesday, May 5 th , we also covered the San Gabriel Valley. Not only at the Golf
Now that‘s fun! Tournament but also during the Rally now... what gives with this weather? It got to a point where
Quest provided weather data to the CHP motors. Quest also found out that CHP‟s don‟t melt in
the rain but they are real get-it-doners. The rain was just what the professionals call “AM Showers”. Quest had lunch at my
old stomping grounds, Monterey Park Fire Sta. 61 catered by Luminarias‟ and put on by the Monterey Park FF‟s Assoc. This
was a full and a great day. Each day is because we are able to meet and visit with great people who open their hearts and
arms for us at each stop, every day, 5 days, for 14 years. Come the end of the day, part of the ground team headed up to Santa
Maria where we started the 4 th day covering the Santa Barbara County. Our lodging was reserved at the beautiful Santa Maria
Inn. Sara San Juan, Sales Manager, and every employee was very pleasant during our 1-night stay before heading off in the
morning to Pismo Beach Fire Sta. 64 for
the CCFCGT check
presentation and Founder Greg Leptich.
BBQ dogs an‘ burgers—YUM! This year Quest was
able to include the San Luis Obispo Office
of the CHP for an
escort from Santa Maria to Pismo Beach
and return. Each year
Quest is able to add something new and
what a great success
after 14 years – still going strong.
On Thursday, June 4 th half of Quest covered the Ventura
County area while the other covered the
Santa Barbara County.
We wish to thank Myles Smith for 14 years
as the Ventura County
Area Coordinator. You have done a superb
job. To start off the day,
like every year, we were very fortunate to have the Ventura
County Sheriff’s Department/SAR Unit
donate flying time to
provide a flight for Quest‟s Ventura County
Fly Team, which was to
include Dr. George but he needed to take a day off – what a
pinnacle of Support for Burn Survivors.
Thank you to Myles and
Charnell Smith for the breakfast at Shield‟s Park in Fillmore. By 2:30PM, the Ventura leg was off to meet up with the Santa
Barbara leg and the Hoffmans at the Santa Barbara Pier.
Wish to also thank Howard Orr for 14 years as the Santa Barbara County Area Coordinator, as well as Mike Klusyk for the
last 3 years as Howard‟s assistant. Many thanks to each of you for a great job. For the last 5 years, Mike Klusyk has helped
out immensely in assisting with organizing the Santa Barbara leg. This year, Howard was able to join us so Howie and Mike
Quest wants YOU!
ran the leg. Quest had a very special day. Quest started the day with an
escort from the San Luis Obispo CHP to Pismo Beach and Pismo Fire
Sta. #64 in San Luis Obispo County for the check presentation from the
C C F C G T G o l f
Tournament by Greg
Leptich, Founder and
Director. We then
traveled to Santa Maria
Fire Sta. 4 for
breakfast, then to
Guadalupe, Lompoc
Fire, Santa Barbara
County Fire Sta. 11,
Santa Barbara County Sheriff‟s Dispatch, Santa Barbara Pier for meeting
up with the Ventura Leg, and allowing some Burn Survivors to get a ride on
Santa Barbara‟s Harbor Patrol and see them operate the big nozzles and
spray lots of water. Quest was able to see Burn Survivor Ventura County
This smile says it all!

Firefighter Lopez who was in the Area on the 1 year Anniversary, and we
stopped by the Santa Barbara City Fire TC and had an early dinner with
the group. It was great to see Firefighter Lopez. You might say that this
was one good reunion and a great union of everyone at a great dinner
sponsored by the Santa Barbara City FF’s Assoc. The Santa Barbara
City Firefighters did an outstanding job on the dinner and welcoming us to
their City along with the Ventura County Leg and the escorts. This was the
2 nd Annual Santa Barbara City Firefighters BBQ and THANKS SO
MUCH FOR A SUPERB JOB.
On the last and final day of the 14 th Annual Quest Rally 2010, a little
birdy told me that someone from the CHP is retiring and this will be his
last escort after 5 years as the Lead Sgt. In the fire service, it doesn‟t take
much to get a plan in action at a moment‟s notice. Since Fire and
Law Enforcement are
such great buddies, I decided to plan a „very nice‟ covert action
for the ever surprised
Sgt. after 28 years with the State of California. So during the
day, little ol‟ me was
asking fellow Officers about the Sgt. The only little tidbit I could
get was his nickname
„Ice Man‟ and just what the name implies. But he also is by the
book which is OK as
well. In the end, while having a Great Lunch at Warner Bros, The management of
Warner Bros allowed me to get up in front of everyone and
present Sgt. A J ‘Ice
Man’ Torres his retirement celebration from Quest and Warner
Bros. The Quest rally
then loaded up and off we were to the remaining afternoon stops
and the grand finale
at Galpin Ford for a wonderful dinner. Firefighters Quest and all
its volunteers are so
appreciative of the Boeckmann‟s for their wonderful generosity
for such a finale, and
also the endless support during the year as well. Each of these
locations put on a
show and it is so gratifying to know that these 2 great companies
care as well. The
management from Warner Bros., Mr. Ron Ibaven (endless
supporter of Quest
even at the Golf Tournaments) and Mr. and Mrs. Boeckmann, Brad Boeckmann,
Carolynn Chavez (my go-between), and Giovanni, the chef for the
Rick Chambers many years of superb
meals. Galpin Ford
has supplied Quest
Ventura County Sheriffs
Happy Retirement Ice Man!
all the volunteers for taking time away from family and
friends to participate and lend a valuable hand. To each
and every Officer and Sgt. that assisted in the escort from
the 13 offices for a safe tour MANY THANKS. To Mercy
Air, Roy Cox, Bill Jones, & the flight crew for 14 years
of support. To the CSFA, Dave Hubert, Barbara, and
Team Thanks so much for the 7 heartfelt years of
support. To all the Departments that support Quest,
Sponsors of meals and equipment, our event T-Shirt
sponsors, and to Dr. George Fishbeck and Rick
Chambers for a very memorable Rally 2010. These 2
Distinguished Gentlemen have given so much of their
time for US. We owe each of them a great deal of
THANKS and APPRECIATION.
vans for logistics for
14 years and Quest
is so indebted for your support.
I want to extend a great deal of thanks and appreciation to Ken Fuller
of Gear USA who has been a great supported of Quest over the years. Ken
and his crew worked extremely hard to provide Quest with the Rally 2010
Event Shirt. Gear USA donated not only their time but artwork for this shirt
to show their caring for the cause. They worked till the wee small hours to get
the shirts done for us and WE are extremely thankful. It is devotion like this
and from ALL the other Sponsors that Quest is able to keep fording a head
and reach 15 and even 16 - Hey!
Hard to believe 14 years go by so quick and we are already geared for
15 – Aren’t WE PEOPLE WHO LOVE OUR WORK!! Thanks so much to
It wouldn‘t be a rally
Tell us how you feel about Quest!

It goes without saying, but we’ll
say it again… we couldn’t do this
without you… safe, in line, on
time! Your generosity and caring
shows in each and every one of
you who do this duty.
Like Moses and the Red Sea,
you provide us safe passage and
WE SALUTE YOU!
All of us at Firefighters Quest
would like to express our sorrow and
condolences at the recent losses of so many
officers from the ranks of the CHP. To the
family, friends, and
compadres of these fine
people, know that our
hearts and prayers are
with you all, and may
such tragedy never
befall your ranks
again!

Thank You ALL
for being there for us
and supporting Burn Survivors in high fashion!

Often Times I‘m asked how Quest has become so successful, and my reply is simple, great volunteers and
compassionate donors interested in helping others. As I look back on the recent Quest Rally, I am reminded of a
great week with family and friends. All sacrificed time from work, their family and friends joining together for the
cause of helping others. While many were established Quest volunteers, we had the honor of welcoming many new
members to our family. Each participated with a happy greeting and a smile on their face and each exhibited the
spirit of volunteerism ready to work each and every day with the mission of Quest in their mind.
With the 2010 Quest Rally in the history books, what an inspirational and rewarding week it was. I am honored
to volunteer with an organization that just 14 years ago was a small dream that involved hope and the ability to help
others affected by burn injuries. It is truly remarkable to see what Quest has become.
May 3-7, the Quest Rally‟s caravan of dedicated volunteers traveled over 1000 miles collecting donations from
agencies, organizations, corporations and individuals throughout California for burn survivors. Firefighters
participated from communities in Central and Southern California where many generous contributions were made.
To our loyal friends, we appreciate your continued support. At the end of the week, the Rally continued to prove to
be a tremendous demonstration that the fire service and our faithful Quest supporters continue their commitment to
assist those that have been affected by burn injuries.
This year‘s Rally once again included multiple Rally legs occurring simultaneously throughout the week. The
logistics involved to complete this task were daunting, but occurred without a hitch. With the help of our celebrity
spokespersons Dr. George Fischbeck, & Rick Chambers, Quest collected nearly $130,000.00 in direct donations.
Quest is proud to announce the following organizations that will benefit from your hard work and contributions:
Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation
Arrowhead Medical Center - Burn Center
Burn Institute - Inland Empire
Circle of Care Foundation
Firefighters Burn Institute
Fresno Community Burn Center
Grossman Burn Center – Santa Ana
Grossman Burn Center – West Hills
International Association of Firefighters
Burn Foundation
Torrance Burn Center
UCI Medical Center – Burn Center
UCI Burn Foundation
LA/USC Burn Center
AND many Individual Burn Survivors
Once again, a very special thank you to all who volunteered with enthusiasm and for the sacrifices made in order
to travel with the Rally caravan for the cause of helping others. Thanks also to the Executive Board of Directors who
provide the vision and direction of the organization and the Area Coordinators who set the logistics plan and pull it
together. To the road crew who make the dream a reality, Quest wouldn‘t exist without each of you and the purpose
you serve. Special thanks to all who donate to the cause and purpose of helping others. Many will benefit from our
efforts and we can all stand proud of our mission and desire to help those affected by burn injuries.
Thank you once again for all you do for the burn community!
On February 19, 2010 Michele Roy and her
staff at Mt. High hosted another successful Ski
and Ride Day. We had great weather and a lot
of support from the local business that donated
raffle prizes. Tony Mucci from Shasta was
there with his EZ Up handing out samples of
all the latest drinks from his company. We
also were blessed to have volunteers from
Quest and the Grossman Burn Center show up
and give us a hand with all the usual logistical
stuff. All in all it was a great event and the best
part we made about $14,450 between the raffle
and Mt. Highs generous proceeds from the
ticket sales. I want to personally thank
Michele, Chuck and all their staff at the
mountain, what great people and great
supporters of Quest. A special thanks to my
San Bernardino County Fire family, Gabe
Gonzales and Steve Turner and the crew from
Station 101 who were able to cover this for me
while I was in class, Thanks again!
Annual Charity Golf Tournament 2010
Well, let me start with a shocker – IT DIDN‟T RAIN again. That‟s right it is not a typo – IT DIDN‟T RAIN. Firefighters
Quest‟s Annual Charity Golf Tournament was held at the Angeles National Golf Club for the second year in Sunland on
March 15th to celebrate another year for a very special Event. 2010 is the 14 th year of existence for Quest and with the
economy is still in such a state of uncertainty, seemed to not be a deterrent for continued supporters. Plus we had quite a
few newcomers as well. This was one of the biggest tournaments for Quest with 128 golfers and 18 sponsors in 3 different
categories, and that means that Quest needs to thank a lot of the sponsors for stepping up to the plate for the support even
with the economy.
I would like to thank Sharil Thanks to those who fed us... V a r g a s ,
Tournament Liaison for A n g e l e s
National Golf Club, and all the
employees that
made our tournament very special even
with some last minute changes.
A n g e l e s
National really supported Quest, burn
s u r v i v o r s , a n d b u r n organizations
by affording us to have a great Tournament. I
would also like to thank the
Chef at Angeles
National for assisting with the
cooking of the
tri-tip and for Dave Brown and h i s g r e a t
assistant for the cutting of the meat for the
lunch, as well as Dave‟s
GREAT CHILI.
These 2 guys from Vandenberg Fire donated
their time and drove down just
to support our
Event. Dave has cooked his chili for our
event now 3 years. His meal
has become a
staple. Quest even had Gordon O‟Neill, the
famous picnic-table dancer during the Rally
years ago to assist this year. Gordon is with Santa Barbara County Fire and works at the Air Ops in Santa Ynez.
Wish to extend a very special Thank You to 1-800-BoardUp – 4 Directors of Emergency Services (Scott French and
Tina Conaway) and the 4 LSP‟s that provided the funding – California Restoration Contractors, Kaping Construction, Pro
Tech, and Better Floors. Their support made the event that much more successful and Firefighters Quest hopes that they
enjoyed it as well and are willing to support Quest again next year. I wish to thank the T-Shirt Sponsors as well for their
great support for the event even in these hard
...gave us gifts...
times . Please take note of the list included in
this article about the $125 Tee Sponsors, and the
$250 full and finish intro page ads as well. All of
these sponsors deserve our support „cause after
all they supported Quest in another very tough
year. Firefighters Quest was also privileged to
have for the 7 th year, BJ‟s Brewery that
supported the tournament. Thank you so very
much Mr. Alex Puchner of BJ‟s Corporate for
the authorization and Oscar- the Brewmaster,
from the West Covina Brewery for supplying the
golfers with what has become a very
appreciative commodity. Mr. Puchner even
authorized to provide their Great Brewed Root
Beer for Root Beer Floats. Yes that is right,
Quest even provided root beer floats for those
that had a sweet tooth. I also want to thank the

French family for supplying golf ball sleeves for the event. The Quest Tournament would not have been a success if not for
these sponsors so PLEASE support them. What surprises will we have next year? Don‟t know, you might have to pass the
word and enjoy first hand.
I wish to thank as well those vendors that took time from their businesses to come out, support, and set-up vendor booths
to show support for Firefighters Quest and provide product for the golfers. A very special thank you to Tony Mucci and
National Beverage for Shasta, and RipIt, and for allowing the Shasta Girls to be present for all the Team Photos. Tony and
National Beverage has been a great supporter of the Mountain High Ski and Ride Day for the last 5 years. It was special
and many thanks Tony. Firefighters Quest must NOT forget Mountain High with Michele Roy and Gary and their crew for
their time and being a great supplier of hand-outs during the tourney and for the raffle. Michele and Mountain High have
been HUGE Supporters of Quest with the Annual Ski and Ride Day with all the proceeds to benefit Burn Survivors and Burn
Organizations. Another special thank you to Firehouse Brew who supplied coffee for the morning as well as donating coffee
packets for every goodie bag to each golfer. Thanks each of you for your GENEROUS SUPPORT and hope to see you all
next year.
A successful Tournament is only as good as the volunteers that come out and with the tireless efforts give so much of
themselves for the betterment of others. Thanks to each of you for ALL your work before the event and during. To the
newcomers this year for working the tournament, I hope you
have recovered and enjoyed the event as much as us old timers.
Hope to see you again next year. Many thanks as well to all
those companies and individuals that provided items for not
only the goodie bags but also the raffle. It makes for a long day
but the reward at the end is worth it. For any Event to be
successful, it takes dedication, hard work, devotion to a cause
or just plain old sweat.
We held the 14 th Annual Firefighters Quest Rally 2010 on
May 3-7. I do hope that with the major date change a month
early that all went well. Hope to see you at the Annual Quest
recognition Dinner to be held in October, 2010.
Thanks again to all those that participated, donated their time and product, provided sponsorships, and pure caring for
TENTH ANNUAL LOS ANGELES CITY/LOS ANGELES COUNTY FISH-OFF
On the evening of June 2, 2010, 3 boats left Long Beach Harbor with 76 men for the annual fishoff
competition, and returned on the 3 rd . Andy Ruiz, a Captain from Los Angeles City, started this
challenge between Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County to see who could catch the most &
largest fish—and also to try and get the most amount of fishermen per boat. Fish off now has at least
five departments involved, including the Ventura County, Pasadena and Glendale Fire Departments.
The object is to have a group of people who like to fish, and while doing so they are donating to a
great cause, helping burn survivors, and all proceeds go to Quest.
What started out small has grown to quite an event. After the boats dock and the winner is
announced, this year the plaque and trophy went to retired Battalion Chief John Squire of L.A. City.
His catch was a 37 pound 8 oz. yellowtail. This is the second year that Los Angeles City has won so
they keep the plaque once again. The history is that the department which wins keeps possession of
the plaque at their station, for the year.
Dinner is always fish and chips at Queen’s Warf in Long Beach, after dinner there is raffle.
Everyone enjoyed the evening and went home happy!
Andy Ruiz and Trophy Fish Winner Chief Tonka Truck!

WOW, another year has passed since our last Quest rally. It
seemed funny moving up one month, it was hard preparing
ourselves to be at station #21 in Glendale on May 3 instead of
June7th. But we made it and every thing seem to go really
well. The weather was great. Bill and I decided to go the high
desert and Santa Maria this year, it has been a few years since
we went that direction, and we really enjoyed seeing everyone
again and catching up (in the few minutes we had at each stop)
to get a hug and exchange a few words.
At the Antelope Valley Station in
Victorville Bill met one firefighter
that is married to our niece‘s sister.
On past rallies we have had the
privilege of meeting other people that
are friends with or are related to
someone we know.
In Santa Barbara we met up with the
Mother, whose daughter and son-in-law are burn
survivors, she rode in the fire rig from Santa Maria to Santa
Barbara and back with Howard Orr of Santa Barbara County
Fire. It was very nice meeting her and wish her and her family
continued strength as they recover from their injuries.
Another happening this year is Grossman Burn Center
moving from Sherman Oaks to West Hills. It will seem funny
not going to visit in Sherman Oaks, or as our grandchildren
refer to it as ―Pops‖ hospital. A place where our ―MIRCLE‖
Ramblings from
The Jensens
was preformed. (It was probably because of the wonderful
care from the Doctors & great Nurses that made Bill survive a
life threatening injury.!) Anyway we certainly wish them all
the best in their new move, and we are anxious to visit the new
burn center. Also we are planning on attending a burn
survivor meeting at Grossman Burn Center in Bakersfield at
S a n Joaquin Community Hospital in the near
future.
Bill & I went to Long Beach the first week
of June, as representatives of Quest, for the
10th annual ―Fish Off‖ to see the
fishermen come in with there catch, and
watch the fish weigh-in and find out who
the big winner was. Again we would like to
Thank Andy Ruiz from L.A. City Fire, who is the
organizer of this event each year, he and his crew go to a lot
of work to put The Fish-Off together and make a wonderful
donation to Quest as a result of their hard work.
On another note we are sad to say a very nice man and
great member of Quest, Burbank Fire Chief Retired Rick
Mehling, recently passed away, he will be greatly missed by
all, our thoughts are with his family.
We are looking forward to all the upcoming events later
this year. Until next time, take some time to enjoy the people
in your life.
Quest remembers …..
It is with great sadness that we write of the loss of two Quest family
members, Brad Bois and Rick Mehling.
Brad Bois passed this spring from a long battle with cancer. Brad
participated in many Rallys and enjoyed the fun times and
craziness that each year‘s Rally would bring. Brad always
brought a happy face and provided lots of practical jokes at the
appropriate times during the Rally to help lighten the mood when
times were stressful.
Rick Mehling also passed recently from cancer. Rick retired from
the Burbank Fire Department as Fire Chief in 2005 and quickly
joined Quest as a Co-Chair of the Patient Assistance Committee.
Shortly thereafter Rick expressed interest in being part of the
Executive Board of Directors and he soon filled a seat on the
Board. Rick‘s interest in helping others was extreme and he
provided many with the much needed support. Many who have
been assisted by Quest were because of Rick‘s work and referred
to him as an ―Angel‖.
Rick Mehling
Brad and Rick will be missed by all involved in Quest, and as we
continue to help heal others we will do so in their names.

Memorial Day weekend marked the 6th Annual Grossman Burn Center Family Camp
held in Lake Hughes, California. This year's event was a "best ever" in a safe and secure
environment where over 50 burn survivors and their
families could enjoy the camaraderie of one another.
From fishing to a giant ropes course to soccer, baseball
and scuba, along with numerous support groups, this year's attendees were 100%
involved in the many available offerings. "Pass the Mic" ended every meal gathering
and everyone was amazingly open in sharing. Thank you to Firefighters Quest for
their support of this meaningful and fun weekend. You DO make a Difference!
The 13 th Annual Benefit Car Show was held Sunday, June 27 th , at Red Hill Community Park in Rancho
Cucamonga. Quest joined in once again and hosted a booth, as well as receiving the proceeds from the day. It was
a beautiful day at a gorgeous venue with many really fine vehicles on display. This event really should be on your to
-do list for next year! Thank you Rancho Cucamonga Firefighters for putting on your best for burn survivors!
The 27th Annual Catalina Community Health Fair was held Thursday, April
15 th in the Casino Ballroom. Local island providers set up stations providing
information and many basic medical services and screenings throughout the
hall. We helped spread the news about Quest and our services and took in a very
generous helping of boot donations. Thank you Catalina and we‘ll see you again
next spring!
On May 7, 2010, the last day of the 2010 QUEST Rally, the entire caravan was invited to make a stop at
Grossman Burn Center‘s new home. We made a stop at L.A. City Fire Station 106 to have them join our
caravan. On board Engine 106 was CAO Beverly Gilmore from West Hills Hospital. When we arrived at West
Hills we were welcomed by the Burn Unit staff and other employees of the hospital with refreshments and
snacks.
To our surprise, West Hills Hospital made a donation to Quest for the amount of $2,000. An invitation was
extended to any and all survivors to come by and visit the newly redecorated Burn Unit on the 4 th floor of the
main hospital building.
At this time GBC is not fully functional. Work is in
progress to update and bring the ICU up to code, which will
make them a completed burn unit. This is expected to take
place by the first couple of weeks in June 2010. For pictures of
this day, search our web page for the pictures of this years
Quest Rally.

Michael Romero, an RN in the Burn Intensive Care Unit at UC Irvine Medical
Center is a strong believer that the person with the hardest job in the burn unit is the one lying in the bed.
When asked why he continues to put himself through something as grueling as an Ironman Triathlon his reply is
always the same, ―Because I can‖.
Michael has competed in endurance events since the late ‗80s beginning with a standard triathlon in
Rosarito, Mexico at the age of 19. This race prompted a fever for the sport that remains with him today. By
Michael‘s 21 st birthday he had completed his first Ironman Triathlon in Penticton, BC Canada, which consisted
of a 2.4 mile swim, then a 112 mile bike ride followed by a 26.2 mile run. Through the years, his love for racing
has also afforded him the opportunity to compete in such events as the ―Escape from Alcatraz‖ triathlon, in
which the swim portion was exactly as the title suggests. He has also competed in Ironman events in Zurich,
Switzerland and the Hawaiian Ironman Championship held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Michael has spent his life
traveling the world, competing against the best and being an inspiration to those who know him.
In 2000 at the peak of his long distance training for another Ironman, Michael suffered a debilitating back
injury. Over the next seven months he chose alternative medicine rather than the surgery that his doctors
recommended. In the end, he was able to avoid surgery, but the inactivity and intensive therapy that dragged on
for years took a heavy toll on both his mind and his body. It wasn‘t until 2004
that he felt ready to challenge himself again, but Michael felt his Ironman days
were over. Trekking and mountain climbing offered him an alternative outlet
for his desire to push himself, so he climbed. During a two week expedition up
Mount Kilimanjaro in East Africa, his body cooperated and led him to believe
that his Ironman days may not be over, and his motivation returned.
In August, 2010 Michael will be celebrating his 20 year anniversary as an
Ironman Triathlete by heading back to the place where it all began, Penticton,
BC Canada, for the Subaru Canadian Ironman Championship. A lot has
changed for Michael since he competed in this event at the age of 21; a wife, a
son, 20 years of miles on his body and a rewarding position as an RN on the
burn team at UC Irvine Medical Center. In the past Michael had dedicated
major races to loved ones that had passed away, but this year‘s race is
dedicated to survivors, the burn survivors he has had the honor of working with
for the last six years. Michael is pushing his body to the limit to raise funds
which will be used to relieve burn patients and their families of some of the
financial pressure that their injuries create. Michael‘s second endeavor is to
raise scholarship funds to support burn unit staff seeking to further their burn
care expertise by attending national burn related educational conferences.
Together, we will celebrate his accomplishments and help him reach these monumental goals.
If you‘d like to support Michael in his efforts, please contact Jennifer Todd, RN at 714.456.5641 or sponsor
Inland Empire
GREETINGS FROM THE GREATER
INLAND EMPIRE
This year‘s Quest was once again a Great Success. We
began in Rancho Cucamonga with the C.S.F.A. Horse Drawn
Steamer leading us into Station 174 for lunch. Barbara
Brooks from www.FDTVNN.com was there to film our
arrival and conduct interviews. Go online to check it out.
Next we were off to Baldy View Elementary School in
Upland to the rousing applause of 629 students overjoyed
with our Code Three approach. The Chippies and all of us
had a great time handing out badges to all the kids with
everyone having the best time ever.
We next headed to Montclair to an empty station,
entering with perfect timing as the team from Riverside also
arrived. Very shortly thereafter the Montclair Engine
returned and we had a good time in a jam packed station.
Following Tonto Zlotorowicz‘s instructions, we safely
arrived at Ontario Fire, double parked everywhere and
enjoyed a fun presentation.
After a short drive from Ontario Fire to our newest stop
at Phoschek, we met Jim Fitzgibbons, the plant manager and
his staff. They had food, drinks and souvenirs for everyone
as well as a large donation. We thank Jim Conrad and
Leonard Zlotorowicz for bringing Phoschek in on the Quest.
We were once again on the road for the ―long‖ ride to
Chino Valley Fire with Tonto Zlotorowicz guiding us in for a
safe arrival. There we had more snacks and popsicles to cool
us down.
Load ‗em up and head ‗em out! We‘re off to La Verne.
Our escort, a La Verne engine and P.D. units, cleared traffic
as soon as we exited the freeway. That‘s what I call smooth
sailing. La Verne treated us to a great dinner as always.
Tuesday we took the day off but returned on Wednesday
with one team in Orange County and the other in the San
Gabriel Valley. After dinner at John Wayne, I headed north
in the Ferrari with my trusted sidekick and chauffer Captain
Steve Mensen (Upland Ret). We made it to Santa Maria by
11:45pm with Tinkerbell sleeping the whole way. We had a
great time in Santa Barbara County on Thursday and made it
home by 8:00pm. Once again, Tinkerbell slept the whole
way home. While we were traveling through Santa Barbara,
the second team was in Ventura County and the weather was
perfect.
Friday we were in San Fernando Valley with stops at Fox
Studios, Beverly Hills FD, Disney Studios, Warner Bros.
Ranch for lunch, Glendale FD, Burbank FD, Burbank Airport
and an awesome dinner at Galpin Ford.
This year‘s Quest collected over $130,000.00 for Burn
Survivors and we could not have done it without all your
help. Once again a REALLY BIG THANK YOU to the
California Highway Patrol for getting us safely to all our
stops and my guardian from the Rancho Cucamonga office,
Sgt. Jeff Briggs and his team.
Upland Fire took a sabbatical this year but we are hoping
they will be back next year.
Tinkerbell is getting a little old but said that if she can
keep up with Dr. George, she‘ll be back again next year.
My heartfelt thanks goes out to all the volunteers who
made this year‘s Quest a success and all the Fire Departments
that invited us into their stations. Without you, this could
never happen, but with you we are able to help many Burn
Survivors in what is probably the most difficult time of their
lives.
Mark the date and set the table…
our Annual Quest Recognition Celebration happens October 17
at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Encino. Sure, that’s a
whole summer away, but put it in the back of your
mind now that when you’re draggin’ out the pumpkins
and fall gear, you have a date to get together with us
to mark another year’s achievements and those who
have made them possible. Come and reward yourself for the efforts
you have made - and will make - this summer.
Yeah that’s right, get out there and volunteer!
Then come celebrate it and feast with us next fall!
The Grossman Burn Center moves this July!
Same great team, great new home!
This July, the Grossman Burn Center will move from Sherman Oaks to West Hills Hospital and Medical
Center. ―We are excited about the affiliation with West Hills Hospital and the growth and development
opportunities this brings to us and our community.‖ Says Dr. Peter H. Grossman, co-director of the Grossman
Burn Centers.
With the move, the burn center will increase to 39 beds including 8 intensive care unit beds. Services such as
Hyperbaric, Physical and Occupation Therapy, Child Life,
Community Outreach and Education and Burn Survivor
Support Groups will continue to be a part of the
comprehensive care provided at the burn center. Burn
center staff is excited for the move and to start a new
journey at West Hills Hospital.
Grossman Burn Centers: Our mission is not merely to ensure
patient survival, but to restore our patients to as close to their
pre-injury condition as possible - functionally, emotionally and
cosmetically, in a nurturing, compassionate and personal
environment.

Orange County
On May 5th, The Firefighter's Quest made its 14 th trip
through Orange County. Multiple meetings, emails, and
countless phone calls finally came to fruition. Beginning
with a hearty breakfast of Krispy Kreme doughnuts and
coffee in Brea, we started the caravan through "God's
Country". At lunchtime, the Los Alamitos Firefighters
hosted an outstanding All-American BBQ and we were
visited by the base command staff. At the end of the long
day, the Quest caravan was welcomed to OCFA Fire Station
33 on the runway at John Wayne Airport with a phenomenal
Cinco de Mayo dinner of chicken enchiladas with all of the
trimmings.
I am very grateful to the entire Quest Cast for keeping
things safe, on time, on track and relatively problem free.
And, of course, a big round of applause goes to Officer Brian
Habegger and the CHP Officers from the Santa Ana Office.
Even Orange County rush hour traffic could not stop the
Quest Caravan!
During our productive day, donations were collected for
the UCI Burn Foundation, UCI Medical Center Burn Unit,
and Grossman Burn Center in Santa Ana as well as the
The Orange County Fire Authority participated in the
Fourteenth Annual Firefighters QUEST For Burn
Survivors on May 5, 2010. FC David Altamirano, FAE
Martin Alcon and FF David Hogan rode the Type III
engine from FS 47. The CHP, code 3 escort, supported
the QUEST entourage that started at 8:30 AM in Brea
and made a stop at all the fire jurisdictions throughout
Orange County to receive donations.
The Orange County Professional Firefighters
Association, Local 3631, made two donations of $501
each in Laguna Beach and at the end of the day at
OCFA‘s FS 33 at John Wayne Airport. The donations
help support the UCI Burn Foundation, the Grossman
Burn Centers and QUEST.
The Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighters prepared a small but
appetizing dinner for the QUEST entourage. About 30
guests that included burn survivors, nurses, and
volunteers dined on a green chili chicken enchilada
casserole, fried rice, and beans. The beverages included
lemonade (non- alcoholic beverage but close in tartness
to a margarita on ―Cinco de Mayo‖) and water. Costa
Mesa Fire with their new truck joined the entourage for
dinner and the photo opportunity.
Santa Barbara
Another Quest Rally has flown by. As we wrap things up on 2010, we are already talking about plans for next year's rally. This year was
another huge success on the central coast! The Santa Barbara County Rally actually began in San Luis County, starting the day at Cal
Fire‘s Pismo Beach Station with our biggest donation coming from Greg Leptich (VAFB Ret.). His annual Central Coast Firefighter‘s
Golf Tournament raised an amazing $20,000.00. What a great way to start the day! Greg always makes us shine! Thanks to him and all his
great efforts for Quest each and every year! The Cal Fire Pismo Beach Engine brought the rally down to Santa Maria FD for an awesome
continental breakfast. This gave our coordinators a chance to go over the days‘ line up before we continued down the coast. We were
joined by Blanca Flor Benedict, mother of Carla and Lance Hoffman, who both received burn injuries in last year‘s devastating Tea Fire
in our county. Before the rally was over, Quest had pledged to help the Hoffmans with some of their financial burdens as they continue to
recover from their burn injuries. This is what Quest is all about! As we left Santa Maria Station 4, a Santa Maria CHP unit led the
procession followed by Santa Maria, Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara County Engines as well as our entire Quest ground support team.
We continued on to Guadalupe FD for our next presentation. This gave us a chance to catch up on the status of a local burn survivor
injured a couple of years ago. We hear she is still doing well. Great news! Next, we traveled through Orcutt and Vandenberg Village en
route to Lompoc City FD. This gave the support team a chance to take a ride on their famous slide. We never pass up an opportunity for
fun along the way. This years rally changed course as we left Lompoc and took the scenic coastal route along Highway 1 and 101 lead by
our Buellton CHP division unit followed by Lompoc Engine 3 and our Santa Barbara County Engine through Gaviota and into Goleta for
our stop at Santa Barbara County FD Station 11. We were met by crews from Engine 11, Truck 11 and Water Rescue 11. This donation
was given on behalf of Local 2046, Firefighters from Santa Barbara County FD as well as Carpenteria/ Summerland FD. Our CHP Motor
units from the Goleta division met us there as well to lead us to our next stop at the Santa Barbara County Dispatch Center. Trying to keep
our voices down inside the hub of our Dispatch center wasn't easy. As our Sheriff, Fire and AMR dispatchers continued to answer 9-1-1
calls we snuck in a photo opportunity before being dispatched to the Santa Barbara City Harbor. Our burn survivors and photographers
boarded Santa Barbara City Harbor Patrol's Boat for a harbor cruise and a chance to flow water from their turrets (just in case there were
any nearby boats on fire). Maybe it was just a chance to squirt some water, because we could! The ground support team had a chance to
meet up with Montecito FD crews and catch our breath as we awaited the arrival of the Ventura leg of the rally. Arriving in style with
Code 3 lights and sirens along Cabrillo Boulevard, Ventura Quest Rally Coordinator, Myles Smith, arrived with perfect timing to join in
the largest procession of the day. We combined both the Santa Barbara and Ventura Rallies to travel along the Santa Barbara beachfront
onto our final stop at Santa Barbara City FD Drill Grounds for and incredible Tri-tip and Chicken BBQ lunch. It was well worth the wait!
Firefighters from Santa Barbara City FD did an outstanding job laying out a full spread for all to enjoy. This was a great location to wrap
up another awesome year, calculate our day's donations and give a few final interviews. Many thanks for all who participated and
supported this year‘s Firefighter‘s Quest for Burn Survivors Rally throughout Santa Barbara County! We're looking forward to 2011
already!
San Fernando Valleys
Thank you one and all for another successful ―QUEST RALLY
2010‖. It‘s hard to believe that we have been doing this for 14 years
now !!!. The donations collected for Wednesday May 5th (San
Gabriel) and Friday May 7 th (San Fernando) were an
OUTSTANDING $56,513.00.
This year The Rally traveled in the San Gabriel Valley on
Wednesday May 5th. The Rally made stops at The LA Firemen‘s
Credit Union, Pasadena Fire, South Pasadena, San Marino, San
Gabriel, and Alhambra. The Rally made a lunch stop at Monterey
Park Fire Station #61 with lunch provided from Luminaries‘
Restaurant and organized by Rick Burroughs and the crews at Fire
Station #61. Monterey Park did a great job hosting and the volunteers
were very grateful. Thanks Rick & Luminaries‘. On a second note
Capt. Rick Burroughs conducted a silent auction at Station 61 with
baskets donated by Himself and his Wife Carmela. These Gift baskets
alone raised over $1000. Thank You Rick and Carmela for all the
work involved in preparing these Gift Baskets, they were a giant hit.
The Rally continued to Montebello, Downey, Santa Fe Springs,
Monrovia, Arcadia, and ended the day in Sierra Madre. I‘d like to
thank all the Department Contacts for their help in organizing a
successful and smooth running day.
On Friday May 7th, The Quest Rally started with a stop at LA
City Station #33, Fox Studios, Beverly Hills, and Disney Studios. The
Rally made there annual stop at Warner Brothers Studio Ranch for
yet another outstanding Lunch. Thanks to Frank O‘Donnell, Jeff
Nagler, Perry Husman and staff for another year of support. After
lunch the Rally continued to Glendale Fire, Burbank Fire, Burbank
Airport Fire, then the rally made a new stop at LA City Station #106
in West Hills and then on to the the new Grossman Burn Center in
West Hills. After the stop at Grossman‘s the rally continued to Galpin
Ford for a wonderful ending rally dinner provided by Mr. Boeckmann
of Galpin Ford in Van Nuys, who has been a great supporter of
―Quest‖.
It‘s always amazing to me how many volunteers show up for the
Friday Rally Day, word must be getting out about all the Fun & Food
that day!!!!
I would like to give a special thanks to Sergeant A.J. Torres and
Officer Kevin James of the California Highway Patrol for keeping us
safe and on time. Without the CHP‘s support this event would
probably not take place.
Thanks again to all your generosity and support. Working
together we are making a difference in the lives of many burn
survivors in California and throughout the United States.
