FIREFIGHTERS QUEST
Fall 2011
For Burn Survivors

Firefighters Quest 15 th Annual
Rally 2011
WOW is the word after 15 years of the Quest Rally,
with each year it gets a little better. This year Quest
raised approximately $135,000 for the ‗burn cause‘.
Who knows where the Rally will go from here with all
the support
we receive
from the
CHP, the
C S F A
S t e a m e r
(who we
r e a l l y
missed this
y e a r ) ,
Mercy Air,
G a l p i n
Ford, and
local Fire and Law Enforcement. Without these people
Quest could not even conceive of doing this rally. We
owe each of these organizations a great deal of thanks
for all the hard work over the years.
Some may look at this year‘s Rally as just another
notch under our belts, but with the newbees we had with
us this year we hope to bring them back fo‘ mo‘. For
Mercy Air and Roy Cox it has been another superb year.
Mercy Air opens their hearts for whatever Quest needs
to ‗get the job done‘. Even by texting at the last minute,
they enabled Quest to change the schedule to where the
change worked better for all. This year the pilots for the
event were just unreal and supportive. Each pilot gave
the Quest flight team great rides and a ‗show‘ for the
group on the ground. When Quest contacts Mercy Air it
seems to be the
norm in response
—‗whatever you
need‘ – doesn‘t
that make the
R a l l y
Chairman‘s job a
slice?
The Boeckmann‘s and Galpin Ford have been with us
for 15 years supporting the Rally. The family invites
Quest every year to terminate the week at their facility
for dinner to celebrate great work done by all for burn
survivors, burn centers, burn camps, programs, and
education. The Galpin Family each year provides two 15
passenger vans to serve our logistical needs for the entire
week. They have an amazing 15 years of doing this, and
many years they have even provided 3 vans for the
cause. This support makes our job so much easier in that
we get to keep more of the funds we raise. It‘s because
of sponsors like Galpin who provide our overhead, that
we can give 100% of what you raise to the causes you
support.
Rally 2011 didn‘t stop at Galpin this year like in years
past. Brad Boeckmann‘s son graduated from USC on
that Friday, and the Boeckmann‘s wouldn‘t have been
able to attend. Quest felt it would not be right to impose
upon their generosity when they obviously have their
hearts and minds elsewhere and could not be part of it.
Congratulations to the Boeckmanns and we look forward
to seeing you during Rally 2012.
What a week for the cause! On May 9 th Quest had 3
ground teams and a flight leg just to kick things off.
Nothing like stepping right into the fire on the first day
so we can
work out all
the bugs.
Each of the
A r e a
Coordinators
– P e t e
Lawson (High
Desert), Bill
B u e h l e r
( I n l a n d
Empire), Mike Matheson (Riverside), and Deanne
Johanson (Big Bear and the great supporters) did a great
job. Thanks to the ‗Grizzly Manor‘ in Big Bear for the
great lunch. Thanks as well to Rancho Cucamonga for
the superb lunch for the ground team, and many many
thanks to La Verne Fire for the awesome dinner to close
out the day. We travelled many miles by land and by air.
The sea part comes on Tuesday, because I didn‘t want to
do everything on the first day. A superb job to each of
the area coordinators for a job well done and for your
many years of volunteerism for a great cause.
On Tuesday May 10 th the day started very early, like
all the days did I guess. A small flight team with Cat and
Conrad Batham as Catalina area coordinators and I

headed out to
Rialto to hitch
a ride with
Mercy Air. We
were to tackle
the cruise ship
m a n i a i n
Avalon that day
with T-Shirt
and apparel
s a l e s . O n
W e d n e s d a y
morning, the
Quest flight
team and Avalon Fire personnel did the Rally check
presentation in front of their Fire Station, with the Sept.
11 th Firefighter Memorial. What a great group of guys at
Avalon Fire, they will do anything to support Quest.
Even hang out at the Boardwalk and assist in apparel
sales. Cat and Conrad Batham have done a superb job
over on Catalina for Firefighters Quest and burn
survivors and the hospital there as well. Quest even left
some apparel items to be raffled off for the school
fundraiser.
While Quest Catalina was doing their gig, Scott
Stephens, area coordinator for Orange County and who
was not able to join us this year, did a great job heading
up the time schedule for the Orange County leg. Even
though Scott wasn‘t available to lead the day, we were
able to have Craig Hammond do the honors. This was a
great day with great weather for Orange County. Many
thanks for the department‘s who had meal stops – Brea in
the AM, Los Alamitos for lunch, and the Orange County
Fire Authority
had a very
gracious offer
for dinner but
Quest was
unable to
accept due to
the time and
logistics in
preparing for
Wednesday.
Each year the
Orange County Fire Authority offers a dinner for Quest
and hopefully next year we can schedule it. Many Thanks
to Scott and Craig for running the Tuesday leg of Rally
2011.
Wednesday, May 11th was the start of the San Gabriel
Valley leg, with the fly in of the Catalina leg at Monterey
Park for lunch. Then we ended up at Pier 55 in Long
Beach for the LA City-County Fish-Off and dinner. Like
every year, the San Gabriel Valley leg is busy and Area
Coordinator Stu Stefani does a superb job.
Andy Ruiz from LAFD each year puts on a superb
Fish-Off – a multi-Agency fishing competition which at
the same time raises some serious funds for Firefighters
Quest and our programs and services. This event started
out with 2 Departments, LA City and LA County, but
now the event takes in 5 or 6 departments and over 100
anglers.
A superb job was done by ALL this day, and then we
knuckled down for the big Thursday in Ventura and
Santa Barbara.
On Thursday, May 12 th , we started a 2-prong attack on
the central coast
to terminate in
Santa Maria for
dinner. 1 finger
was in Ventura
and like every
y e a r , t h e
Ventura County
D e p u t y
Sheriff‘s and the
SAR Unit from
Camarillo Airport started Quest and Dr. Richard
Grossman off right. With an unreal or should I say
awesome or for others ‗rad‘ or maybe sweet or just
maybe kick butt flight, the Quest crew got to fly the
Ventura valley and by Dr. Grossman‘s house, and then up
into the canyons above Fillmore/Santa Paula where the
unit had made some miraculous rescues. Area
Coordinator Myles Smith from Ventura City did another
great job. While on the Ventura leg, Dr. Grossman
informed us that he had taken care of a burn patient and
that the survivor was the Chief for the Ventura City PD.
Having heard this, I the ‗wheeler dealer‘ had Myles
make a call to the PD and see if he could contact the
Police Chief, and in a covert operation known by only a
couple quiet hombres, the Chief surprised Dr. Grossman
at the Ventura City
Hall. I have a
feeling that was a
good moment for
all. What a great
day in Ventura with
a great group of
brotherhood, and
May 12 th
S a n t a
B a r b a r a
leg headed
up by
Howard Orr and Mike Klusyk, both from Santa Barbara
County Fire, and Howard himself being a burn survivor.
What a full day and great day with fun we had in the
Santa Barbara Harbor, with a ride on the fire boat for
some burn survivors. The Quest group had a big change
this year because the team headed north from Carp/
Summerland to Santa
Maria. Quest hasn‘t done
this route for some time
and it gave the
departments a chance for
something different.
Also, Santa Maria Fire
had expressed interest in
doing a Santa Maria
Style tri-tip BBQ dinner
for some time, and with
Howard, Mike, and
myself we decided to have the route flip around ‗to stir
the pot‘ and add a little flavor. Both Howard and Mike‘s
plates are full enough with everything they are involved
in, but they are still able to fit in the rally and do it
with passion. The Quest group from Ventura even
hoofed it up to Santa Maria and locked in with Greg
L e p t i c h ,
founder of
Central Coast
Firefighters
Charity Golf
Tournament,
w h o h as
raised the
most each year
f o r B u r n
Survivors over
the last 7 years.
This year his annual Charity Golf Tournament held on
Monday, April 19 th raised $18,000.
Quest Ventura surprised the heck out of the Santa
Barbara leg when they made the right turn on College
off of Betteravia on the way to Santa Maria Sta. 4 for
dinner. Rally 2011, like so many before year after year,
seemed to bring out the ‗very devoted‘ to support burn
survivors, programs, grants, centers, and burn camps.
Greg Leptich is just one of many that step up each year
and do the
impossible and
take the rally
to the next
level. This
year for the
first time,
Pismo Beach
F i r e
D e p a r t m e n t
allowed their
e n g i n e t o
travel 30 minutes down Highway 101 into Santa
Barbara County just for Quest and Burn Survivors and
to present a check for $18,000 for the Central Coast
Burn needs. Greg was the main guy that
made this particular travel happen. It is
ALL of you that support Quest and its
programs that make events during the
Rally so much more fun. Quest is very
fortunate for ALL the area coordinators
that we have. What a testament to this
organization. Maybe that is why we are
such a good fit with the California
Highway Patrol?
Oh and now the BIG DAY, THE
L A S T H O O R A H , T H E B I G
ENCHILADA, and for some THE BIG EASY. For
maybe quite a few this day was a welcomed sight after
dealing with 4 days and loads of fun. Friday, May 13th
for those that
a r e n ‘ t
superstitious, was
a great day. Being
closer to home it
cuts down on the
long days, and we
had a chance to
visit the studios.
A great lunch at
Warner Bros as
always, and welcomed with a big heart, but that is just
like everywhere we go during the entire week. Area
Coordinator Stu
Stefani was in
charge of this day
as well, and he
kept a fast pace.
With not only a
good size escort
from the California
Highway Patrol –

Southern Division, but a good contingent of Quest
personnel, we covered Los Angeles and the San
Fernando Valley in style. We stopped at West Hills
Hospital, where the caravan was met by Derek
Thomas. This was Derek‘s first time outside the
hospital since his accident in October and we were
proud to have him join us there. Then we were on to L.
A. City Fire Station 106 for a superb dinner cooked by
the guys at Firehouse Chefs. All of which was
organized by Quest Board Members Mike and Elaine
Rojas. Each of them did a great job dealing with the
last finale.
Having been the Rally Chairman for a bit and in the
trenches so to speak, one comes to realize the work
involved to put on such an event can be tasking and a
strain to say the least. This Rally encompasses many
people and many thanks go out to them. Sincere
appreciation needs to be handed out to all the
volunteers that showed up and offered any assistance
they could. Some even drove for miles and stayed in
town to assist – the unsung heroes. The Quest Rally is
a team effort and not a ‗me‘ event, with our longevity
lasting 15 years and hopefully more. Many thanks to
all the volunteers that have gone above and beyond for
the betterment of burn survivors, burn camps, burn
programs, burn centers, and burn education.
The Quest Rally can‘t be a Rally if NOT for the area
coordinators who put in great time and patience to deal
with the many factors that make up the week-long
Rally. To each of you for ALL the HARD WORK, a
SINCERE AND DEEP THANKS:
Pete Lawson – High Desert
Mike Matheson – Riverside County
Bill Buehler – Inland Empire
Deanne Johanson – Big Bear
Cat and Conrad Batham – Catalina Island
Scott Stephens – Orange County
Stu Stefani – San Gabriel and San Fernando Valley
Myles Smith – Ventura County
Mike Klusyk – Santa Barbara County
Thanks to each for the devotion to help others in
need.
Together We are Making a Difference.
Scott French
2011 Rally Chairman
Despite his battle with Cerebral Palsy, Michael Peat made
it his quest to visit every fire station in the OCFA. When he
accomplished that feat the story was carried by the OC
Register. We saw his story, and we just knew that we had to
invite him along. Michael and his mother Bonnie travelled with
us all day, and made an already good day all that more
exciting. Here Michael is awarded his Quest member pin and
hat for being such a good ambassador for us!

15 Times the Many Thanks –
California Highway Patrol
It is truly amazing and remarkable that Firefighters
Quest has had the wonderful opportunity to work
alongside the CHP for a ‗common goal‘- to assist burn
survivors and the programs and centers. Rally 2011
was the 15 th Annual Quest Rally where we had the
California Highway Patrol, with 12 Offices supporting
the Rally and 45 Officers, which does not include the
16 personnel behind the scenes. Each year Quest is
welcomed by the CHP at the initial contact and during
the months prior they are very gracious and open to
anything we need, even with the state in the position it
is at this time. In the area that Quest covers we also fall
under 4 divisions which is where the initial contact
transpires, with either letter writing to the Division
Chiefs for approval or contact with the Sgt‘s. Public
Affairs Coordinator Offices. Each year Quest deals
with some new personnel to the position, but whoever
takes over is so understanding and supportive to the
Quest cause and mission.
I feel that Quest has earned our reputation with the
CHP because we are very alert during our Rally, follow
the rules, are a ‗happy group‘, and respectful as well as
honored to be working with the officers. The officers
volunteer for this duty and most of them put in for the
detail 1 year in advance, like as soon as the present
Rally is over. That is because Quest personnel are so
open with the CHP‘s needs and very polite. Words
can‘t express the great working relationship we have
with the CHP and their personnel.
Thanks for so much for the great leadership during
Rally 2011 and we hope to see the California Highway
Patrol and all their personnel for Rally 2012.
It has been truly an honor to work with the California
Highway Patrol.
15 th Annual Quest Rally
A Success!
Often Times I‘m asked how Quest has become so successful, and my reply is simple: great volunteers and
compassionate donors interested in helping others. As I look back on the recent Quest Rally, I am reminded of a great
week with family and friends. All sacrificed time from work, their family and friends joining together for the cause of
helping others. While many were established Quest volunteers, we had the honor of welcoming many new members to our
family. Each participated with a happy greeting and a smile on their face and each exhibited the spirit of volunteerism
ready to work each and every day with the mission of Quest in their mind.
With the 2011 Quest Rally in the history books, what an inspirational and rewarding week it was. I am honored to
volunteer with an organization that just 15 years ago was a small dream that involved hope and the ability to help others
affected by burn injuries. It is truly remarkable to see what Quest has become.
May 9-13, the Quest Rally’s caravan of dedicated volunteers traveled over 1200 miles collecting donations from
agencies, organizations, corporations and individuals throughout California for burn survivors. Firefighters participated
from communities in Central and Southern California where many generous contributions were made. To our loyal
friends, we appreciate your continued support. At the end of the week, the Rally continued to prove to be a tremendous
demonstration that the fire service and our faithful Quest supporters continue their commitment to assist those that have
been affected by burn injuries.
This year‘s Rally once again included multiple Rally legs occurring simultaneously throughout the week. The logistics
involved to complete this task were daunting, but occurred without a hitch. With the help of our celebrity spokesperson
and loyal human baton, Dr. George Fischbeck, Quest collected nearly $130,000.00 in direct donations.
Quest is proud to announce the following organizations that will benefit from your hard work and contributions:
Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation
Arrowhead Medical Center - Burn Center
Burn Institute - Inland Empire
Circle of Care Foundation
Firefighters Burn Institute
Fresno Community Burn Center
Grossman Burn Center – Santa Ana
Grossman Burn Center – West Hills
International Association of Firefighters Burn Foundation
Torrance Burn Center
UCI Medical Center – Burn Center
UCI Burn Foundation
LA/USC Burn Center
AND many Individual Burn Survivors
Tom Propst, Executive Director
Once again, a very special thank you to all who volunteered with enthusiasm and for the sacrifices made in order to
travel with the Rally caravan for the cause of helping others. Thanks also to the Executive Board of Directors who provide
the vision and direction of the organization and the Area Coordinators who set the logistics plan and pull it together. To
the road crew who make the dream a reality, Quest wouldn‘t exist without each of you and the purpose you serve. Special
thanks to all who donate to the cause and purpose of helping others. Many will benefit from our efforts and we can all
stand proud of our mission and desire to help those affected by burn injuries.
Thank you once again for all you do for the burn community!

Greg Leptich and the Central Coast Firefighters Charity Golf Tournament
was once again the Rally’s largest donor. Pismo Beach Fire (home of the tournament)
then allowed a rig to come meet us for dinner in Santa Maria to make the presentation.
Thanks Greg once again for a job well done!
Winner Scott Mohlenbrok takes
a pose with Fish Off Chairman
Andy Ruiz after accepting his
trophy. And it’s not the first
time Scott has held that trophy
high. Andy and his Fish-Off
efforts were published in the
Belmont Shores newspaper
(http://belmontshore.patch.com/
articles/firefighters-fish-off-long
-beach-to-help-burn-survivors)
And Andy gave an interview on
the Philip Friedman Outdoors
Radio Show during an Angels
game on AM 830 radio. Nice
job Andy, we know that’s a lot
of work just to put our name
out there and we appreciate
the effort on behalf of burn
survivors everywhere!

Santa Clarita Youths Raise
Donations for Quest
With school out for the summer and activities and
birthday parties occurring, Quest was the recipient of
a most unique celebration. Generally, party goers
bring gifts for the birthday honoree, however, two 12
year old Santa Clarita youths had a better idea.
Rather than bring birthday presents to their party,
they requested friends bring donations for their ―Fill
the Boot‖ fund raiser supporting Quest. Kenny Payne
and Nikol Popov invited friends from their local
swim club to their birthday party and raised $721.00.
Quest would like to thank Kenny & Nikol for their
thoughtfulness and desire to help others. The
generosity of all who attended the party is very much
appreciated. Nikol and Kenny can be proud of this
very selfless gesture that will provide assistance to
many. Their generosity speaks volumes of their
character and Quest wishes them success in their
endeavors.
On May 9, 2011, the Fire Fighters Quest for Burn Survivors visited
the Big Bear Valley to collect donations. They arrived
via a Mercy Air helicopter at Big Bear City Airport to rally for
donations. Awaiting the Quest team was Brian Grimes and his
antique fire engine, and the crew from Big Bear City Fire
Department. The group then caravanned to visit each Big Bear
Valley Fire Station to collect donations. Over $4600 in donations was
collected after visiting all of the fire stations.
All of this around the lake travel has the caravan participants
working up an appetite. Jayme Nordine at the Grizzly Manor generously treated everyone to lunch. With full
bellies and a pocket full of donations, they all headed back to the airport to go to the next Quest destination.
The Big Bear Valley is proud to be a part of The Quest and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
This picture attached is Sparky promoting a Car Wash at Big Bear City Fire Department, held specifically to
raise funds for The Quest. In a single day (that was bitter cold and windy) nearly $1200 was donated.
Deanne Johanson, Administrative Assistant/PIO
Big Bear City Fire Department
Big Bear Airport was also the site of the Big
Bear Airfair on August 6. Quest manned a booth
at the fair and made many great contacts with the
public. We also took in almost $100 in
donations. Thank you to Scott French, Rick
McCarter, and Brian Grimes for making the
event!

GREETINGS FROM
THE GREATER INLAND EMPIRE
I‘m writing this article while vacationing on the beautiful island
of Maui. The pace here is truly slow and easy which reminds me of
this year‘s Quest. The area coordinators had everything arranged so
well that it was truly a slow and easy travel week. This was only
made more efficient and safe with the help of the California
Highway Patrol.
We started the Quest this year with a team in the High Desert, a
second flying with Mercy to the mountains, and a third in Riverside/
Hemet. We had lunch with Rancho Cucamonga Fire and were
welcomed by Chief Mike Bell and his great team. A very big thank
you to Kelley Donaldson, who always comes through gallantly for
the Firefighters Quest.
Next we went to Baldy View Elementary School in Upland to
visit 700 students and Principal Lorrie Buehler, my beautiful bride.
The students and staff listened to a presentation on fire safety from
Bill Jensen then made their donation, in pennies, nickels, dimes and
quarters. It always feels like more when it is that heavy!
Montclair Fire, led by Chief Troy Ament, welcomed us at their
HQ, Station 1. Passing through the station always provides a needed
stop in the shade.
Ontario Fire closed down part of the street for us as our size
greatly increased with the addition of the Quest air team and
Riverside/Hemet team. Chief Chris Hughes and his staff gave us a
great welcome and generous donation.
Phos Chek was unable to participate in this year‘s Quest but did
send a donation for our Burn Survivors. Thank you Jim Fitzgibbons
and staff.
Next we headed West with a very long procession to Chino
Valley Fire Headquarters for a welcome snack with Chief Kirk
Summers and his staff. Massiel De Guevara always does a great job
making us feel at home.
Then we trotted north to the 2010 Quest Department of the Year,
La Verne Fire, for dinner. Dave Bonanno and Sam Dominick set up
a fantastic dinner at Station 1. We, again, thank Chief John Breaux
and his staff.
And the Biggest Thank You goes to the California Highway
Patrol, Captain Wayne Bridge, Lt. Kevin Porter, PIO Jeff Briggs and
their elite group of officers who guided us through another safe day.
We really appreciate them because without their assistance the Rally
would not be possible. MAHALO!
We finished the first day of Quest with almost thirty thousand
dollars collected. What a great start! Thank you Inland Empire!
In other news, here are some upcoming events from Rancho
Cucamonga Fire:
On June 26 th they hosted their 14 th annual Firefighters ―Around
the Lake‖ Car Show with proceeds to benefit the Firefighters Quest
for burn survivors and Inland Empire Burn Institute. Executive
Director Sherri Laffay is doing a great job over there for burn
survivors. On July 17 th , Rancho Cucamonga Firefighters hosted a
back to school event for ADONAI, an organization that assists
families affected by cancer. Firefighters barbecued for the families
while volunteers provided backpacks and shoes to the children for
the new school year. Rancho Cucamonga Fire will partner with
Chaffey Community College for a September 11 th memorial for the
community on the school campus. The firefighters will also host an
open house on October 15 th in honor of Fire Prevention Week.
If you have news of any upcoming events at your department,
send it to me or our webmaster, Craig Hammond at
craig.hammond1@cox.net, to be put on the Quest site.
And last but not least, a massive Thank You to the two people
who have helped me the most to be successful in life and the fire
service. First, to my wife Lorrie who always leads by example and
allowed me to retire from the blasted Infernal Revenue Service with
a small collection of my marbles still intact so that I can be an
integral part of this great team. Next, I must acknowledge my
gratitude to my Fire Chief Bill Stead from the Mt Baldy Fire
Department, who taught me patience and everything I needed to
know for a successful career in the Fire Service. Individuals like
you, Chief Stead, are the reason the Fire Service is so successful and
well respected.
Well, I have finally taken that BIG leap into the 21 st Century with
a web site where you can see Tinkerbell at work as well as my barn
and toys: mttorch.com. My new email address is
bill@mttorch.com.
Mahalo and Thank You from the Paradise Island of Maui.
Bill Buehler and my trusty sidekick Tinkerbell
Inland Empire Coordinator
Thank You
Rancho Cucamonga Firefighters
for hosting another wonderful car show
to benefit Quest.
This really is a sweet event,
what with the park and the lake
and the food and the cars…
lots of really well cared for cars.
This should be on a lot more people’s
to-do list for next year!

ORANGE COUNTY
On Tuesday, May 10th, Quest embarked on it’s 15th
annual charity fundraiser throughout beautiful Orange
County. Numerous volunteers made their way to our central
meeting location in Glendale and by 0630, the vehicles for the
caravan were refueled, restocked and ready to go. With
everyone and everything in place, the caravan made its way
to our first stop, Brea Fire Station 1. While there, we met up
with the rest of our OC contingency. Thanks to members of
the Brea Fire Department for providing an assortment of
pastries and beverages to get our day started.
Unfortunately, Scott Stephens, the area coordinator for
Orange County and the one responsible for today’s schedule,
couldn’t make it. Scott was invited to attend a special
program for the betterment of his career. We all missed Scott
and can’t wait for his return next year.
This year we had Orange County’s honorary Firefighter
Michael Peat and his mother Bonnie spend the day with us.
Michael, born with cerebral palsy, had made it his goal to visit
all the stations of the Orange County Fire Authority. Today,
Michael was able to expand his visits to other departments
throughout the OC as well. Michael was able to ride in
various fire apparatus and CHP vehicles while traveling lights
and sirens from fire station to fire station. Michael was a
trooper from the get go and his presence, enthusiasm and
determination inspired us all.
Being able to stay on schedule falls to our good friends
and long time supporters of Quest: The California Highway
Patrol. With years of training and experience, along with the
expertise of coordinating presidential motorcades, the CHP
makes our day run smoothly and efficiently. Without them, it
would be near impossible to make this into a one day event.
A special thanks to Los Alamitos AFRC for sponsoring
lunch for the Rally. The grilled burgers, hotdogs and
homemade potato salad hit the spot and provided a much
needed boost for the troops. As if that weren’t enough, they
sent us on our way with a care package of desserts.
Aside from the pleasure of collecting funds for burn
survivors and their families each year, it is always a treat to
see old friends at each stop and make new ones along the
way. The generosity of our supporters goes without saying.
Again, I would like to thank all those who participated,
volunteered and/or donated money for such a worthy cause.
A special thanks to the coordinators from each department.
Your monetary contributions provide a wide array of support
for not only the burn survivor but also their families as well.
Thanks to all the nurses and staff from our local burn centers
who volunteer their day. It’s nice to see the combined fruits of
our labor in treating burn survivors. Speaking of, a big thanks
goes out to all the burn survivors who helped us throughout
the week. Your dedication and commitment to Quest is
evident by your efforts and hard work.
It with great pleasure to be a part of such an outstanding
organization who’s main goal is to provide support and
assistance in times of serious need.
On May 10th, The Firefighter's Quest made the long trip
through Orange County. Multiple meetings, emails, and
countless phone calls finally came to fruition. Thank you to
the entire Quest cast for keeping things safe, on time, on
track and relatively problem free. A very special thanks goes
to Craig Hammond who took my place and pulled off a
flawless event. Craig is a true leader with the heart of a
servant. And, of course, a big round of applause goes to
Officer Brian Habegger and the CHP Officers from the Santa
Ana Office. Even Orange County rush hour traffic could not
stop the Quest Caravan! Donations were collected for the
UCI Medical Center Burn Unit, and Grossman Burn Center at
Wet Med Santa Ana as well as the Firefighters Quest for Burn
Survivors. At the end of the long day the caravan then sped
off to prepare to do it all over again in the San Gabriel Valley.
I would like to thank the following people who help
make the 2011 Rally an incredible success:
Chris Lingwall and the Brea Firefighters Association
Matt Nelson and the Orange City Firefighters Association
Jim Ramirez and the Anaheim Firefighters Association
Bill Strohm and the Garden Grove Firefighters Association
Brad Canepa and the Los Alamitos Firefighters Association
Joel Whipp and the Huntington Beach Firefighters
Association
Chief Drake and the Huntington Beach Chief Officers
Association
Joe Cucinotti and the Fountain Valley Firefighters Association
Ethan Poli and the Santa Ana Firefighters Association
Darren DeFluiter and the Costa Mesa Firefighters Association
Carlos Medina and the Newport Beach Firefighters
Association
Thomas Padden and the Laguna Beach Firefighters
Association
Robert Alvarado and the Orange County Professional
Firefighters Association
Michael Peat and his family
Orange County Fire Authority Assistant Chief Camargo
The crew from OCFA Engine 55
Dr. Marianne Cinat, Jennifer Todd from the UCI Burn Center
Meredith Rattay from Grossman Western Medical Center,
Santa Ana
California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Habegger and the rest
of the Santa Ana CHP Office.
All the Firefighters Quest Volunteers…
Please remember without you, none of this would be
possible!
The Santa Barbara Quest Rally took a
step back in time in 2011, traveling from the south coast and
finishing with a classic Santa Maria style BBQ prepared by
only those who do it best: the Santa Maria Fire Department.
The last time Quest traveled this direction was when it all
began in Santa Barbara County 14 years ago. The morning
started off with an incredible turnout from the Carpinteria/
Summerland Fire Department. Met by our outstanding CHP
motor escort, we headed off to the Montecito Fire
Department. Met by another great turnout of department
personnel, this was the first time in three years we have
stopped in Montecito. The last two years they have met us at
our final BBQ stop hosted by the Santa Barbara City Fire
Department.
Led by CHP motors we then traveled along the Santa
Barbara coastline enroute to one of our favorite stops of the
day, the Santa Barbara Harbor. There we met the Harbor
Patrol for a scenic cruise through the harbor to show off their
fire boat’s capabilities. Traveling up Santa Barbara city’s main
drag, State Street, we gathered plenty of looks from local
shoppers and tourists as we headed to Santa Barbara City
Fire’s Headquarters Station in the heart of the city. Once
again, we were overwhelmed by the turnout of personnel who
came out to support this great cause.
After filling our bellies with pastries, we were on the road
again to the County’s main communication hub, the Santa
Barbara County Dispatch Center. They are responsible for
receiving all 9-1-1 calls and dispatching the Santa Barbara
County Fire Department, Guadalupe Fire Department, County
Sheriff Department and AMR Paramedic Ambulances countywide.
Trying to keep our voices down is always difficult as
dispatchers continue to receive and dispatch calls throughout
our stop.
From there, we headed north up the freeway along the
Santa Barbara coast to our next stop at Lompoc City Fire
Department Station 1. Another favorite stop on our leg of the
Rally, this two story headquarters station has a slide rather
than a pole that everyone seems to enjoy taking a ride on. No
one seems to be able to pass up the opportunity to take a
ride.
As we said goodbye and thanks to our CHP motors from
Santa Barbara and hello to our new escort, a CHP unit from
our Buellton Division, we passed right through the middle of
Lompoc to get to our next stop at Santa Barbara County Fire
Department’s newest station, Station 51, in Lompoc. This
modern, combined station with the Santa Barbara County
Sheriff Department provided a great backdrop for the check
presentation photo. Back on the road with engines from
Santa Barbara County Fire, Santa Barbara City Fire, and
Lompoc City Fire led the way with the Quest Rally Support
Team on to Guadalupe Fire Department. Once again, we
were met with a great turnout of department personnel. For
the first time, Guadalupe was able to travel with the Rally,
leading the procession behind our CHP escort to our final
destination, Santa Maria Fire Station 4. Enroute to Santa
Maria, we were met by the Ventura Quest Rally who had
traveled all the way up to San Luis Obispo County to meet up
with Greg Leptich for another incredible donation on behalf of
his Central Coast Golf Tournament crews. He certainly sets
the bar high for all of us each year. He topped all donations
with $18,000. Thanks, Greg!
The Santa Maria Style BBQ luncheon was led by Santa
Maria Fire’s own and recently retired, Dennis Szczepanski.
Dennis and his crew helped to finish off another great year for
all involved in this great charity event. This was my 14 th year
as the Santa Barbara County Quest Coordinator and I can
honestly say I was overwhelmed by every department’s
support and turnout from it’s personnel. A special thanks
goes out to Santa Barbara County Fire, Santa Barbara City
Fire and Lompoc City Fire for their support of Quest by
providing Engines to travel throughout the procession the
whole day. We truly do believe in the Quest mission to help
burn survivors and those hospitals and organizations who
help survivors in their times of need. It was an honor to be
involved with such a great group of people. Thanks again.
2011 has come and gone, as usual it was a good
year for the Riverside County Rally. All
the loyal departments of years past were once
again present for 2011. March Fire Dept., Hemet,
Murrieta and Norco all participated with generous
donations, every dollar counts right! We finished
Riverside County at about noon and met the San
Bernardino leg for lunch at Rancho Cucamonga FD,
it was great! From there we continued on with the
San Bernardino leg for another amazing year.
Thanks again for all the support and participation
from the fire departments in Riverside County
as well as all the departments that gave unselfishly
of their time and money.
Take Care and God Bless.
After Almost 1 Year, Teenager Burned in Fiery
Bishop, CA Auto Crash to Be Released From
Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital and
Medical Center
07.15.11
WEST HILLS, CA--(Marketwire - Jul 15, 2011) - After 11 months in the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital, 19-year-old Derek Thomas is
heading home to San Diego. A press conference featuring Derek, Dr. Peter Grossman and Beverly Gilmore, President and CEO of West Hills Hospital and
Medical Center, will be held on July 19, 2011 at 10 am.
In August 2010, Derek suffered burns to 85% of his body after the car he was a passenger in crashed headfirst into a California Baptist University athletic
van and burst into flames. The collision resulted in 12 injuries and three fatalities. Derek was one of two severely burned survivors and was flown to
Grossman Medical Center at West Hills Hospital. Over the past year, Derek has undergone 33 skin graft surgeries and multiple procedures. Grossman Burn
Centers' specialized surgeons, nurses, and hyperbaric technicians as well as West Hills Hospitals' pulmonologists, psychologists, ophthalmologists, nephrologists,
and a team of hospital departments and services have all contributed to his recovery. The entire team at West Hills Hospital will join Derek's family to
cheer his recovery.
Dr. Peter Grossman commented, "Derek's recovery is nothing short of heroic. Make no mistake, his indomitable spirit and will to heal, and the incredible
support of his many friends and family played a key role in this outcome. Our entire team of burn care specialists has been privileged to be part of this wonderful
story."
Founded in 1969, the Grossman Burn Center (GBC) is the largest plastic surgery-based burn practice in the western United States, providing acute and
reconstructive burn care, rehabilitation, and post-treatment emotional and psychological support. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the GBC has three additional
centers in California and Louisiana and is in the midst of a national expansion. In early 2010, the GBC moved its headquarters to a new state of the art surgical
facility at West Hills Hospital and Medical Center in West Hills, CA.

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that we
share with you the passing of Dr. Marianne Cinat.
Dr. Cinat touched many of our lives and her tireless
and compassionate care made a lasting impression on
each of us who were lucky enough to know her. Her
smile and her infectious laugh will not be
forgotten. Dr. Cinat possessed all of the qualities to
which we aspire in service to our community. Her
dedication, selflessness, and expertise were and
continue to be an inspiration to her colleagues,
trainees, and patients. She dedicated herself to
healing those with the most difficult injuries, as this
was her labor of love. She considered all of you, the
burn community, the fire service, and EMS to be her
extended family.
A memorial fund titled, “The Marianne Cinat
Memorial Fund for Burn Survivors” has been
established in her honor. Please visit http://
www.surgery.uci.edu/MCinat_Memorial_Fund.asp for
more information.
Quest has donated $1,000.00 to this fund in
memory of Dr. Cinat
Well here we are in the middle of the year already, and we hope
everyone is enjoying their summer.
During the rally this year we had the opportunity to make a stop at
West Hills Hospital. This is where the Grossman Burn Center is now
located. When we made our stop, we were so happy to see a young
man (Derek Thomas) that was a patient at the burn center,
he had been there for almost a year after being injured in a
traffic accident. He was outside and waiting to
g r e e t
everyone with a big smile. It was so nice to see h i m
coming along with his recovery. He has an a ma z i n g
charm about him and we certainly wish him
well, as he
left the hospital recently to continue his recovery at
home. At our stop the hospital made a g e n e r o u s
donation to Quest. We are very happy to h a v e t h e m
among our contributors. With their help we can continue
our mission to help others affected by burns. Thank you so
much to everyone who was involved in the 2011
Quest Run, for your work, great
meals, donations and
friendship.
We also attended Mount Baldy‘s yearly Steak Fry
fund raiser. The evening was beautiful and the food was
great; it is a huge family affair. The fire fighters and
friends attend the grill, the ladies see to salads, drinks and
several other duties, while the younger ones are always
on hand to refill your
drinks or fill up the peanut dishes.
They are so cute in their official aprons. Bill‘s nurse,
Helena San Marco from Grossman Burn Center, went along
with us. We also visited with Jeff & Eileen Howe from
Burbank Fire Department, who were there also
representing
Quest. And we always enjoy seeing Mt.
B a l d y ‘ s
Chief Bill Stead and his lovely wife Carol.
W e were honored to be invited to a retirement
luncheon for Ricky Saunders from the Burbank
Airport Fire Department. We first met Ricky several years
a g o during a Quest run, when we were escorted onto the
tarmac and led to the fire station. Ricky and his department were
making a donation to us. One of their fundraisers is an annual bake
sale, funds from the bake sale are part of their donation to Quest. He is
a very ―gentle man‖ and everyone will miss him. He might be
remembered by being the driver of the giant yellow crash rig used in
case of a fire emergency at the airport that usually went with us on
Friday of the rally through the San Fernando Valley. And for
sometimes getting people wet with the nozzle. Ricky has been a
firefighter for over 30 years, and now he is looking forward to
traveling all over the world and enjoying his children and adorable
little grandson.
We wish him well, and he promised to be back for some of our
events.
Enjoy every new day. Until next time, take care.
Bill & Sue Jensen
Yes, long time Quest supporter Ricky Saunders
of Burbank Airport fame is hanging it up!
Congratulations Ricky! We trust we’ll see more of you
now that you have all that free time! ;)

Burn Survivor
Family Camp
The Burn Survivor Family Camp held over the
Memorial Day Holiday was a weekend of fun,
challenges, and camaraderie. From May 27
through May 30, this four-day camp at Canyon
Creek Sports Camp in the Angeles National Forest
offered activities such as a ropes course, Go-karts,
hiking, fishing, and arts & crafts…to name only a
few. There is even a Li‘l Sports Camp for children
ages 2 to 6 years of age. This is the perfect
opportunity for families to enjoy themselves in a
safe environment and to bond with other families
who have experienced a burn injury in their
family.

San Gabriel / San Fernando Report
Thank you one and all for another successful ―QUEST RALLY 2011‖. It‘s
hard to believe that we have been doing this for 15 years now!!! The donations
collected for Wednesday May 5 th (San Gabriel) and Friday May 7 th (San
Fernando) were an OUTSTANDING $56, 220.00.
This year on Wednesday May 11 th , the Rally split the San Gabriel Valley
making stops at the LA Firemen‘s Credit Union, Pasadena Fire, South Pasadena,
San Marino, San Gabriel and Alhambra. The Rally made a lunch stop at
Monterey Park Fire Station #61, with lunch provided by Luminaries Restaurant
and organized by Capt. Rick Burroughs and Capt. Neil Lakin. Monterey Park
did a great job hosting and the Quest volunteers were very grateful. Thanks Rick,
Neil and Luminaries‘. On a second note Capt. Rick Burroughs and his wife
Carmela donated baskets filled with gifts and goodies to hold a silent auction at
lunch. These baskets alone raised just under $1000. Thank you Rick and
Carmela for all the work involved in preparing these baskets. They were a giant
hit.
The Rally continued to Montebello, Downey, Santa Fe Springs and ended at
Long Beach Pier 55 to meet the Andy Ruiz and the LA County / LA City Fish
I‘d like to thank all the department contacts for their help in organizing a
successful and smooth running day.
On Friday May 13 th , the Quest Rally finished up in San Gabriel Valley
Studio Ranch for yet another outstanding lunch. Thanks to
Frank O‘Donnell, Jeff Nagler, Perry Husman, Ron Ibaven
with dinner at LA City Station #106. Thanks to Capt. Mike Rojas
and Eddie Sell from Firehouse Chefs for an outstanding dinner and
finish for the long Rally week.
I would like to give a special ―THANKS‖ to Sergeant Matt
Armenta of the California Highway Patrol for keeping us safe an on
time. Without the CHP‘s support this event would probably not
take place.
THANKS again to all your generosity and support. Working together we are making a difference in the
lives of many burn survivors in California and throughout the United States.
HIGH DESERT
The rally in the High Desert took place on Monday
May 9, 2011. The day started with an awesome continental
breakfast provided by Mt. High Ski Resort. Michele Roy
and her staff put on a full spread for us, thanks Michele!!!
We had a presentation by the San Bernardino County
Firefighters Association, and the guys from Fort Irwin
made the trip down to join us on the High Desert portion of
the rally and also presented us with a donation. Escort
services from the California Highway Patrol were
supplemented by motor officers from the San Bernardino
County Sheriffs Department Victorville Station, Officers
Jeff Wetmore and Brian Moler assisted in insuring our safe
passage through the area.
Next stop was Apple Valley Fire Protection District
where the Apple Valley Firefighters presented us with a
check. Then we were off to San Bernardino County Fire
Station #2 where we were presented with another check
from San Bernardino County Firefighters Association,
thank you Ken Lewis for your continued support. We then
proceeded to Rancho Cucamonga for our lunch stop, and
the High Desert group was then passed over to Inland
Empire Coordinator Bill Buehler.
All in all we had a great day and another successful
start to the week. Thank you to all the department reps and
I look forward to next year.
AVALON / CATALINA
May 10 th , 2011 - The morning started out brisk and
windy. We met up at Tony‘s Auto Repair at 6:30 am and
began our trek to Mercy Air‘s base station in Rialto for
the beginning of our journey to the beautiful destination
of Avalon for the Catalina Island leg of the Quest Rally.
We were delayed a tad by the weather and our pilot
Dean was on board to give us up to the minute details.
Soon we were to be immediately dispatched to Avalon
Fire. We were ready to depart. We had our very
thorough safety briefing with Dean, with the just in case
scenarios. Off we went, with a little wind a lot of cloud
and a smidge of rain. We flew low to start and then we
climbed way up and over all the muck below, wow what
a flight!!
We arrived in Avalon at the heliport at 10:25 am, and
proceeded into town with Dean our pilot for a quick
breakfast. We introduced Dean to some of our island
friends with like interests, as far as camping and
horseback riding. I think he made some quick good
friends that won‘t be forgotten any time soon. We soon
learned that Dean was a veteran with over 20 years
service in the Army, and what wonderful heartfelt
stories we heard over breakfast. An amazing man and
amazing pilot! We all enjoyed a fabulous eat and AFD
took Dean back to the heliport and off he went.
We proceeded downtown and set up our booth and
started to sell our goods. The people of Avalon never
cease to amaze us with their support. It did happen to be
cruise ship day, unfortunately the cruises must have
gotten very expensive, as those people did not really
want to open up that wallet. We did however get a lot of
boot donations!!! We wrapped up the sales at 4:00pm
and transferred all the goods back to AFD for the night.
Scott, Cat and Conrad met up for dinner and discussed
the day and what to do a little different next year. All
the while Scott was telling us we are on our own next
year. Oh come on Scott, we will see you soon!
May 11, 2011 - We met up with AFD at 9:30 am and
discussed the previous day‘s events and talked about
how to change things next year. We further discussed
having a few of AFD personnel join us on the mainland
for next year‘s rally and they were very excited about
the possibility of joining the rally on this side of the
pond. We decided to take the donation photo in front of
the 911 statue that is in front of the fire station.
11:00 am - Assistant Chief Krug took us back to
Pebbly Beach and the heliport for our transport back to
the real world. As we awaited the arrival of Mercy Air
we chatted to all surrounding us as to what we were
doing on the island, and proceeded to enjoy the arrival
of Mercy Air and Don our pilot for our journey home.
As we quickly learned, Don is also an Army Veteran,
and gave us much to WOW about! Oh my… Don was
awesome, we took off from the island and did a quick
fly by over Avalon Fire and did a wave as a thank you to
them. From there, we proceeded to the mainland and
landed at Monterey Park City Hall on the baseball field
and met up with Bill and Sue Jensen, and had our
moments of hugs after a really fun fly over. Then off
again we were to Brackett Air Field.
Special Thanks and huge hugs go out to Mercy Air
and Roy Cox, without whom this would NEVER
happen! And Pilots Dean and Don, Avalon Fire
Department, Chief Steve Hoefs, Assistant Chief Krug,
Eng. Long, Mayor Kennedy, Eng Bray, FF Frankie ―the
Mustache‖ Minuto, Eng Keene, and Yoli Montano from
the Metropole Hotel for always supporting our cause
and just being wonderful. An extra special thanks to
Asst Chief Krug for the chauffer service on the island
and always being our go-to guy! All of us from FFQFBS
thank you, without you supporting this most wonderful
cause we could not make our footprint ever known.
Thank you!!!
We are all looking forward to next year and all the
support we can muster in between!
Thanks,
