Kelso Amateur Dramatic Society
Formed in 1921 Kelso Art and Dramatic Society. We were in
abeyance during WW2, and in the years following, productions
were rather erratic. However, from the late 60s we have
remained very active.
We normally perform a full-length play in mid-November for
which we rehearse Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the
Abbey Row Centre from late August.
The club has had some success in the annual SCDA one-act play festivals over the
years and also performs regularly for charity.
Lauder Amateur Dramatics
Founded 1949 by a group of young people from Lauder who visited Selkirk for a
one-act festival. This festival made a big impression, and in Lauder Parish Church
Hall on the 5th of June LADS was founded. The first public performance was at an
SCDA festival in Selkirk in January 1950. How brave!! A great debt is owed to the
pioneers of LADS which has become something of an “institution” in Lauder. The
society has performed everything from tragedy to farce, one act to three acts,
festival performances, to performances in the local graveyard.– you name it, and they have had a go. People have
come and gone, but LADS is still going strong, moving with the times and also providing candlelit bistro production
evenings.
Leitheatre
Founded in 1946 as Kirkgate Church DS, but renamed Leitheatre in 1973. After a succession of premises we found a
permanent home in 1997. We now have two rehearsal areas, a large workshop, scenery store, wardrobe and
dressing room area, props room and technical storeroom. A Green Room, kitchen and toilets complete the clubroom
facilities of which we are very proud.
Keen supporters of SCDA from its inception, we have had many successes. Since 2000 six entries have reached the
Divisional Final and two progressed to the Scottish Final. In 2003 one of our members was awarded the Scott Salver
for the best new play.
Annually in January we present a touring show about Robert Burns. We also present four-night productions each May
and November and a two week Fringe show in August
Livingston Players
We currently have a membership of over 50, ranging in age from 16 to
70. We are fully affiliated to NODA and SCDA and over the years have
won numerous drama awards for our quality of acting, production and
staging, but we continue to strive for improvement in all areas.
The Livingston Players perform three productions each year. One is a
musical generally performed in the last week in May, and the other two
are plays produced in January and October. We perform our shows in
the refurbished Brian Duguid Auditorium at Howden Park Centre – a
300 seat custom built auditorium with full restaurant and bar facilities.
Luvvies
Edinburgh's first LGBT drama group, founded in February 2006 - produces drama that reflects and relates to the
experiences of the LGBT community, and which provides a space for the expression and development of all dramatic and
production-related skills. The aim is to increase confidence and self-esteem through participation in producing drama.
Early productions included cabaret ("A Taste of Heaven & Hell") and Harvey Fierstein's gay tour de force, a "Torch
Song Trilogy". This was followed by other established and new works, including the dramatisation of a transsexual life
("Painted Eggs") and the story of the Stonewall Riots ("This Year's Thing"). Anything and everything goes - as long as
it's about, or can be performed by LGBT folk!
Mercators
Founded 1936. Although now one of the smallest drama groups,
consisting of recycled teenagers (bar one) we still remain very active. We
boast three published playwrights. We have participated in most One Act
Festivals since 1939. We performed in historical re-enactments at The
Tattoo - an actor's dream; a full house of 8000 every night for three weeks.
Since 2002’s Fringe, we have written and staged drama-documentaries on
the lives and works of famous writers.
Mercators’ have held many SCDA positions, including National
Chairman. Our secretary is Senior Librarian at the National Script
Library, holds Honorary positions in District and Division and is an SCDA
Honorary member. He was awarded a BEM for services to drama.
